***Retirement of old My eBay design and old search system***

27 February, 2009 | 10:43AM GMT

Retiring My eBay 'Classic' design

The current My eBay design will be retired on eBay.ie on 2nd March and eBay.co.uk on 9th March, and the ability to opt out of the new design will be removed.

You can find more information on the new design at http://pages.ebay.co.uk/newlook08/myebay/

Frequently asked questions (with answers) can be found here: http://forums.ebay.co.uk/thread.jspa?threadID=1100227316&tstart=0

Retiring old search system

Last year we introduced a new search system on eBay.co.uk. Until now, buyers and sellers have been able to choose not to use the new search system.

However, with more than 98% of you now using the new search we'll be retiring the older technology in April 2009.

If you're one of the few users who's opted out, you'll see some reminder messages during your searches. We suggest you familiarise yourself with the new search in the coming weeks so that you're ready when the old search is retired.

Regards,

The eBay Team

***Coming soon: Zero Insertion Fees on qualifying auction-style listings on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie, and Final Value Fee rate changes ***

26 February, 2009 | 09:00AM GMT

From 12th March 2009, there's no Insertion Fee if you’re a private seller and you list your item in the auction-style format with a starting price of up to 99p (eBay.co.uk) or €1.49 (eBay.ie). Final Value Fee rates are also changing.

Fees for business-registered sellers using the auction-style format will be unchanged.

Pay only when you sell

In 2008 we made it free to include a picture for your listing. We’re continuing our commitment to moving the cost of selling on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie away from front end fees so that the majority of fees are paid only when you successfully sell an item.

Learn more about the new zero Insertion Fee on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie.

The eBay Team

***Updated: Change to policy regarding sale of knives on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie***

23 February, 2009 | 12:06PM GMT

We’d like to update you on the changes to the policy on the sale of knives.

From 10th March 2009, all knives and swords except cutlery will be banned from sale on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie. The definition of cutlery includes those implements which can be used for eating, including cutlery sets, individual pieces of cutlery and antique cutlery.

All other items, including knives used in the preparation of food will be banned, including (but not limited to);

  • antique knives
  • bread knives
  • craft knives
  • Stanley knives
  • camping/ survival/ hunting knives
  • diving knives
  • kitchen knives
  • Swiss Army knives and Leathermans
  • all swords

Under the new policy buyers will be asked to enter credit card details if they attempt to bid on or buy any item of cutlery in the new cutlery category. These details will need to be provided again after six months if the buyer seeks to buy or bid again.

We will be able to determine if the buyer or bidder enters the details of a debit card, solo card or pre-paid card, the types of card most likely to be held by under-18s. If the details of any of these types of cards are entered, eBay will prevent the buyer or bidder from completing the transaction.

If the bidder or buyer enters valid credit card details they will then be given the option to pay using any approved method of payment.

We will be strict in the enforcement of these new policies and any seller who repeatedly attempts to break this policy will face strict sanctions, including possible suspension from the eBay site.

    Regards,

    The eBay Team

***Original: Change to policy regarding sale of knives on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie***

    09 February, 2009 | 08:00PM GMT

We wanted to inform you of a change to our policies regarding the sale of knives.

All knives except cutlery will be banned from sale on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie.

This will impact UK, Irish and international sellers who currently list knives for sale to buyers on the eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie sites.

Over the last year we have made several changes to our policies regarding sales of knives and also Samurai swords to ensure that only legal knives are available on the UK and Irish sites. However, the criteria for what constitutes a legal knife are increasingly complex, and this step is necessary to help further protect our members and provide them with the highest safety standards.

We will be updating this AB post shortly to ensure that any sellers of knives have full notice, details and timings for the changes.

Thank you for your support in continuing to make eBay such a vibrant and trusted marketplace.

    Regards,

    The eBay Team

    ***Tell us about your business!***

    09 February, 2009 | 06:00PM GMT

How is the current state of the economy affecting you? How confident are you about the future? How is this affecting your future plans?

We want to learn more about the business attitudes of eBay’s top sellers in the UK. To do this, we need your help.

If you’re one of eBay’s top sellers in the UK, you may shortly be contacted by an independent research consultancy, FreshMinds, asking you to take part in a survey on behalf of eBay.

The findings of this survey will collect the views of online businesses trading on our site, and help us to understand the issues that affect businesses on eBay. We plan to use the findings to speak up on your behalf and to help the media and politicians understand more about how the current state of the economy is affecting online businesses.

It will only take a few minutes to complete – but as a thank you, we are offering participants the chance to win a cash prize. The top prize is £250, with two further prizes of £50 for the runners-up.

If you’re asked to take part, we hope you’ll take the time to complete the survey. Thank you in advance for your help!

    Regards,
    The eBay Team

***Previous update: Editing features on Good ‘Til Cancelled listings that have sales***

    05 February, 2009 | 03:57PM GMT

Edited to clarify situation on removal of subtitle feature.

Sellers can now add or remove features (e.g. bold, subtitle) from Good ‘Til Cancelled (GTC) listings that have a sale without having to cancel the listing first. (This has been possible since 3rd February.)

If a feature is removed from the listing before the listing renewal date then sellers will not be charged for it after the listing renewal date.

Currently, if you want to remove subtitles, you need to use the Sell Your Item form. We’re working on updates so you can remove subtitles using Turbo Lister and the bulk editing tool.

For the removal of any other feature from GTC listings, the tools below can be used. The same tools can be used to add features:

    • Sell Your Item (SYI) page
    • Turbo Lister
    • Bulk editing tool
