***Improved security for the sale of knives on eBay***

28 August, 2008 | 01:57PM BST

We'd like to let you know about some changes to our policies on buying and selling knives on eBay. These will come into effect from September this year.

Extra verification when buying

From September, buyers must have a credit card on file with us in order to purchase a knife on eBay.co.uk. If you don't, we'll ask you to enter your card details when you place your bid or use Buy It Now. This is for verification only; you won't be charged.

Rules for sellers

While we're not changing our rules for selling a knife on eBay at this time, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind sellers of the main points in our Weapons and Knives policy:

1) It is an offence in the UK to sell knives to a person who is under the age of 18.

2) It is an offence to market a knife in a way which indicates or suggests that it is suitable for combat, or is likely to encourage violent behaviour involving the use of the knife as a weapon.

3) The following knives are not permitted on eBay. Please check our policy for full details and examples.

  • Switchblade knives - any knife with a blade which can be released automatically or by the use of a trigger.
  • Knives disguised to look like a harmless item.
  • Push daggers - knives with a handle that fits within a clenched fist and the blade of which protrudes from between two fingers.
  • Any stealth knife - a knife or spike which has a blade, or sharp point, made from a material that is not readily detectable by metal detectors and which is not designed for domestic use or for use in the processing, preparation or consumption of food or as a toy.
  • Any knife designed for throwing.
  • Thank you for your cooperation.

    Regards,

    The eBay Team
