***Trust and Safety Update: Take Part in Get Safe Online Week***

12 October, 2006 | 09:29PM BST

Hi there,
Garreth here again, from eBay.co.uk’s Trust and Safety team. I want to tell you all about Get Safe Online week. Get Safe Online is a joint venture involving big industry names such as eBay, HSBC, BT, Microsoft and SecureTrading, SOCA (Serious Organised Crime Agency) and the Government. It’s the UK’s first national internet security awareness campaign aimed at individuals and small businesses.

You can find the website here: www.getsafeonline.org.

Whilst there are obviously risks and potential pitfalls when using the internet, if used safely and securely it’s a fantastic tool for communication, business and pleasure. In fact, if you are informed and your computer is protected there is no reason why everything you do online shouldn’t be safe and trouble-free. And that’s the purpose of the website: it’s an impartial, authoritative and easy-to-understand source of internet safety information. I hope you’ll take a few moments to check it out.

Even if you are busy, please take a few moments to read the ten minute guide.

And don’t forget the 4 basic steps for staying safe online:

S = Spyware- run an anti-spyware program
A = Anti-virus – get anti-virus protection
F = Firewall – have one and ensure it’s turned on
E = Ensure your operating system is updated

Get Safe Online Week Roadshow
Starting today, it’s Get Safe Online week and we’re having a series of events to promote internet safety. This morning, industry leaders, including eBay (UK) Ltd's managing director Doug McCallum, law enforcement experts, government representatives plus other private sector sponsors such as Microsoft, HSBC and BT met to discuss internet safety issues and agreed to work together to promote internet safety.

And the Get Safe Online roadshow will be visiting cities all over Britain this week providing free online safety advice and the opportunity to talk to experts about your concerns. On Saturday, the roadshow will be joining eBay University in Coventry.

The best way of staying safe online is understanding the risks and making sure you and your computer are protected. I hope you’ll take a few moments to visit the Get Safe Online site: www.getsafeonline.org and the blog www.getsafeonlineblog.com.

Regards,

Garreth
