***Temporary test of Store inventory format items appearing in search results*** |
 |
 |
 |
October 15, 2009 | 05:39PM PST/PT

We are currently conducting tests that may result in the inclusion of Store inventory format items in the main search results for a small percentage of traffic. Due to the limited duration of the test, sellers are not advised to change listing formats or change their listing practices in any way. eBay regularly conducts tests to help inform future changes to improve the buying and selling experience. We will not make any permanent or significant changes in the way search results handle various listing formats without notifying sellers well in advance.

***Reminder: Listings Without Return Policy and Handling Time To Be Ended*** |
 |
 |
 |
October 12, 2009 | 02:04PM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
As previously announced, all Good ‘Til Cancelled listings are now required to specify a return policy and handling time. We have gradually begun the process of ending listings that do not properly specify this information. In the coming days, you may see non-compliant Good ‘Til Cancelled listings being ended (instead of being renewed) and placed in the Unsold section of My eBay.
You can easily check to see if you have any listings that need to be updated by visiting this special site and signing in. If you have any listings that are not compliant with these policies, you will see the item numbers listed on the page. You can download the list of item numbers as well.
If you have listings that need to be updated, you can do them one by one or in bulk. We’ve given step-by-step instructions for some of the more popular bulk edit tools here. If you update your listings using a third party tool and require assistance, please get in touch with your provider for instructions.
Please note that listings in Real Estate, Specialty Services, Motors (both Vehicles and Parts and Accessories) and Classified Ad format don’t require a return policy or handling time.
We appreciate the effort that sellers have invested to date to add return policies and handling times to their listings in time for the holiday season.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***eBay Giving Works announces $1 minimum donation and extra time to make donations*** |
 |
 |
 |
October 02, 2009 | 01:46PM PST/PT

| Seema Shah |
eBay Giving Works is making it easier than ever to support your favorite cause when you sell.
First, eBay Giving Works is slashing the minimum donation to $1 per listing. For as little as $1 (or the donation percentage you select, whichever is greater) you can donate to your favorite nonprofit whenever you sell on eBay. This change applies to all eBay Giving Works listings that sell on or after October 1, 2009.
Plus, eBay Giving Works is extending the automatic collection date for donations from the second Monday after a listing ends to the fourth Monday after a listing ends. The extra two weeks will give sellers more time to receive their funds from PayPal and the buyer—before MissionFish collects the donation.
As always, donation minimums and collections dates do not apply to nonprofits selling on eBay to raise funds for themselves, and donations can always be paid any time after an eBay Giving Works listings ends.
In this economy, we know it can be hard to find room in your budget for donations. We are inspired by the continued generosity of the eBay Community and hope these changes will make it even easier to support the causes that matter most to you.
Sincerely,
Seema Shah
General Manager, eBay Giving Works

***Reminder: Some listing features will be discontinued October 1*** |
 |
 |
 |
September 30, 2009 | 04:58PM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
As announced in July as part of the fall Seller Update, several listing features will be discontinued starting tomorrow, October 1.
The listing features that will no longer be available include: Gift Services, Border, Highlight, Featured Plus, Home Page Featured and Pro Pack.
Featured First will be available to eBay Top-rated sellers only.
If you have an active listing with one of these features at the time they are discontinued, the feature will be removed from your listing automatically. You’ll receive a full credit for the price you paid for that feature on the next billing invoice after your listing ends.
Also, the new requirement for Auctions with Buy It Now will become effective tomorrow—the Buy It Now price you set must be at least 10% more than your auction start price.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

- Faster ways to edit listings
- More control over ship-to locations

***Goodbye, eBay Blogs*** |
 |
 |
 |
September 21, 2009 | 02:32PM PST/PT

| Russ Patterson |
After October 31, 2009, we will discontinue eBay Blogs.
Although we realize several members have shared some great content on our blogging platform since its creation in 2006, overall usage and page views have not reached high enough levels to justify ongoing operational and maintenance expenses. Closing down eBay Blogs will allow us to focus more of our resources on our core marketplace.
We appreciate all the articles published on eBay Blogs, and we'd like to thank these eBay members/bloggers for their contributions to the eBay Community. If you have created an eBay Blog, we encourage you to print out or save your blog entries before we close this section of our site.
Remember, after October 31, 2009, these pages will no longer be available on the web.
Sincerely,
Russ Patterson

***Sellers to be credited for features on listings active during test*** |
 |
 |
 |
September 03, 2009 | 03:20PM PST/PT

| Gene Cook |
In July we announced that as of October 1 we are retiring certain listing features and making modifications to others in order to emphasize the most relevant results in eBay search.
Before we roll a significant upgrade to our search engine on October 1, we need to test its performance with live buyer traffic. To get the most accurate readings, Featured First, Featured Plus, Highlight, Border, and Gift Icon are being turned off as part of this final testing phase. This test will impact no more than 20% of the buyer traffic who otherwise would have seen search results that displayed these features. The test will conclude around September 19.
Sellers who’ve purchased these features for listings that are live during this test will receive credit for 20% of the feature fees paid that is prorated for the number of days these listings overlap with the test. If you purchased Gift Icon, Border, Highlight, Featured Plus, or Featured First on a listing that overlaps with the test you can expect to see this credit on your October invoice.
Get more details on the changes to features launching October 1.
Sincerely,
Gene Cook
Director, Global Search

 |
 |
 August 13, 2009 | 09:32AM PST/PT

| Garnor Morantes |
Earlier this year we upgraded the eBay Discussion Boards platform to include additional features and a fresh, new look.
Since then, many of our members have continued to provide us with helpful suggestions to further improve the platform. We've listened to your input and a new set of enhancements are on the way in the next week, including:
- Changes to the "Reply with Quote" function to better present the quoted text and automatically remove signatures
- A modification to the spell check functionality to highlight misspelled words
- Creation of a new "Helpful Topics" area to highlight some tacked threads, thereby freeing up more space at the top of a board
- Reinstatement of pagination links at the top of each page
- Renaming of the "Popular Topics" box to "Active Topics"
- Repositioning of the action icons (such as updated, new, etc.) on a board page to make them more visible.
eBay Discussion Boards Unavailable 4 p.m. to midnight (Pacific Time) on Tuesday, August 18th
eBay Discussion Boards will be unavailable from approximately 4 PM to midnight (PT) on August 18th, so we can add these upgrades. Once we’re back online, we encourage you to jump right in and explore these newly enhanced features.
Sincerely,
Garnor Morantes

***Changes to the eBay User Agreement*** |
 |
 |
 |
August 18, 2009 | 10:00AM PST/PT

| Scott Shipman |
We've posted an updated eBay User Agreement to help us implement changes announced in the Seller Release details of July 27, 2009. This agreement is effective immediately for new members registering on or after today, and on September 29, 2009, for current members.
The biggest change to the agreement supports the new on-eBay resolution process and accompanying policy. With this user agreement update, the policy and process will offer coverage for all buyers who purchase an item on eBay.com. The policy provides guidance for sellers on how to avoid adverse claim decisions. In the event of an eligible claim it also grants eBay permission to deduct amounts from the seller's PayPal account to refund the buyer. eBay will ask for permission to charge an alternate payment method in certain situations. (Note, most of the process details are now located in the policy, referenced in the User Agreement).
As with earlier updates to the User Agreement, we've made other minor changes to reflect eBay's current product and service offerings and industry legal standards. For example, we've made a few changes to the way we describe use of our catalog content.
You don't need to take any further action to accept the new User Agreement. If you don't wish to accept the new User Agreement, please refer to this Help page for instructions on how to close your account. We hope you find that these changes make eBay more useful for you.
Thanks for being a part of the eBay community!
Sincerely,
Scott Shipman
Senior Counsel
eBay Inc.

***Grow your eBay business with Selling Manager Applications *** |
 |
 |
 |
August 17, 2009 | 09:30AM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
If you are looking for ways to make your business more efficient, improve customer service or streamline shipping, solutions for these and many other critical areas of your eBay business are available starting this week. You can try them for free with new Selling Manager Applications.
All sellers can take advantage of these new tools – all you need is a subscription to Selling Manager (now FREE) or Selling Manager Pro. From within Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro, any new applications you subscribe to will appear under the Applications tab. (This tab will begin rolling out today; all subscribers should see it in My eBay by the end of this week.)
From sourcing product to shipping your items, Selling Manager Applications are designed to make your business easier to run. Best of all, every application is available with a free trial (usually between one week and 30 days) – so you can try it out before you subscribe. Most Selling Manager Applications charge a subscription fee; however, you will find many free applications as well.
Here’s how you get started:
1) Subscribe to Selling Manager (now offered for free) or Selling Manager Pro. (Skip this step if you are already a subscriber.)
2) Go to the tab labelled “Applications” and continue to the Selling Manager application directory. You can also view all the applications directly at http://applications.ebay.com.
3) Browse or search for the applications that interest you the most -- customer support, inventory, research and reporting, and more.
4) Try out applications for FREE that will help manage your business on eBay. Remember, each application has a free trial period so you can try it out before you commit to purchase.
If you have feedback about the new applications, or if you have questions, please drop by either the Selling Manager or Selling Manager Pro discussion boards. We have special threads open on both boards where you can share your thoughts and ask questions.
Don’t delay ... take advantage of the free trial offers to get the right application in place for the upcoming holiday selling season!
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***A Message to Sellers from Stephanie Tilenius: Summer 2009 Update*** |
 |
 |
 |
July 27, 2009 | 08:13AM PST/PT

| Stephanie Tilenius |
On behalf of all of us at eBay, I'd like to begin this update by saying thank you. Thank you for your business. Thank you for your input and ideas to help us evolve eBay for the benefit of sellers and buyers. Thank you for your great inventory and your commitment to delivering great service.
We're well aware that sellers of all sizes deliver the deals and quality experiences that bring buyers to eBay and keep them coming back. That's why we're taking new steps to reward great service, bring you more sales, increase your profitability, and help you succeed.
As announced in April, in the spirit of partnership, eBay is now consolidating changes that impact your business into two or three major releases a year, with two months advance notice. This post introduces the second and final major release of 2009. Most of these updates will launch between September 22 and October 1, 2009.
- Rewards for sellers delivering great buyer experiences
- New way to look at DSRs
- Avoid getting low DSRs-1s and 2s. Buyers have different ideas about what constitutes a high rating, but most leave a 1 or a 2 only when they experienced a significant issue with their transaction. eBay will be shifting focus from average DSRs to the number of low DSRs as a more accurate measure of customer satisfaction.
- Only domestic DSRs will count toward requirements for eBay.com. International transactions can be subject to factors outside a seller's control and we want to make sure sellers can expand globally without undue impact to their standing on eBay.com.
- PowerSeller program update: rewarding quality over quantity
- Starting in October, a new eBay top-rated seller status will be added to the PowerSeller program to recognize and reward sellers providing great buyer experiences based on the new way to look at DSRs (very few 1s and 2s). eBay Top-rated sellers will receive the highest PowerSeller Final Value Fee discounts (20%), increased visibility in search results for Fixed Price listings, exclusive access to purchase Featured First and a prominent Top-rated seller badge on item pages. The Top-rated seller badge will be tested in search results pages this summer. The current PowerSeller icon will no longer be displayed on buyer-facing pages including item pages.
- All sellers with 100 or more annual transactions and at least $3,000 annual sales who meet the requirements for Top-rated seller status will be invited into the PowerSeller program and can start receiving Top-rated seller benefits in October.
- Next April, the PowerSeller program will also include a requirement for sellers based on the new way to look at DSRs (very few 1s and 2s). PowerSellers that don't have Top-rated seller status will get 5% Final Value Fee discounts.
- Meanwhile, the current PowerSeller discount structure will continue until April 1, 2010 to give sellers 8 full months to keep their current discounts while they adjust business practices to qualify for the new Top-rated seller status.
- New minimum standards for all sellers:
- Starting in October, there will be a new minimum standard for all eBay sellers based on the number of low DSRs (1s and 2s) received. The minimum standard will be stricter in April, 2010.
- A new Selling Practices policy will define guidelines for professionalism and accuracy in all aspects of listings and transactions.
- Optional buyer charges for shipping insurance will no longer be allowed. Sellers can still buy shipping insurance and add the cost to the item or shipping price.
- Updates to the Seller Dashboard: You can now see a snapshot of your low DSRs (1s and 2s) and standing toward the new Top-rated seller requirements updated monthly through a link at the top of your Seller Dashboard. In September, you will be able to see daily updates.
- Enhanced search presents more relevant listings
- Best Match, eBay's default sort order, will look at listing's recent sales in relation to the number of recent impressions it received as a key factor for Fixed Price listings. An "impression" is any time a buyer sees a search results page that includes the listing.
- In addition, single quantity and newly listed Fixed Price items will be given exposure in Best Match even though they have no sales history. These listings will be given initial impressions based on the performance of similar listings. This change will improve the exposure of new Fixed Price listings that are relevant to buyers.
- Auction-style listings will still get a boost in exposure as they are about to end. To keep auctions enticing, Auction with Buy It Now listings will be required to have a BIN price at least 10% higher than the auction start price.
- A new Search Visibility tool will help you evaluate how your Fixed Price and auction-style listings are performing in search results.
- Several features will be discontinued including Featured Plus, Border, and others to save you money and keep the focus on relevance.
- Product pages are rolling out to more buyers, so list with product details to make sure your listings are included. Also, eBay will start selecting sellers' photos for inclusion in the eBay product catalog on September 1. If your photo is chosen, your user ID and a link to your profile page will appear on the product page. If you'd prefer not to have your pictures selected, opt out no later than August 31.
- Easier, more profitable selling on eBay
- Faster recourse for unpaid items. A streamlined process will cut the resolution time in half. We are also working on a new automated option that will make the process even more efficient, cut the time to resolution to as little as 8 days and block negative feedback when a seller opens a claim and a buyer doesn't pay. This automated option will be tested in late September and our goal is to gradually make it available to all sellers by the holidays.
- eBay dispute resolution for buyer claims is expanding to more buyers to make the process faster and easier for sellers and buyers.
- Buyer communications will be faster and easier to manage with enhancements to My Messages and streamlined post-transaction emails.
- Get more control over international ship-to locations. You'll have the same ship-to choices you have now, plus you'll be able to specify countries you do not want to ship to.
- Upload tracking and delivery confirmation numbers for more shipping carriers.
- Editing listings, even multi-quantity listings with a sale and listing descriptions, will be faster and easier.
- New Selling Manager applications boost efficiency for sellers of all sizes-try them free!
- Category and Item Specifics changes are now consolidated with the rest of updates. Find out if there are changes to your categories.
- Stores subscribers-now you can put all your Fixed Price listings on vacation.
Get more details on all these updates.
You're also invited to:
- Take part in one of several upcoming webinars on Tuesday, July 28 and Thursday July 30.
- Join me and other leaders from eBay and PayPal in a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, July 29. Check the Announcement Board soon for more details.
- Talk with members of my staff during the next two days on a special discussion board we've set up for this purpose.
Again, thank you for partnering to make eBay a thriving, successful marketplace.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Tilenius
Senior Vice President & General Manager, eBay North America

***2010 Events Update*** |
 |
 |
 |
July 13, 2009 | 10:31AM PST/PT

| Lorrie Norrington |
Last year, before taking eBay Live! to Chicago, I announced we would be going to Orlando in 2010. Today, I'd like to give you an update on our plans and provide some specifics on how we are evolving the eBay community events.
Today, we are announcing eBay: On Location, a new program that will bring eBay fun, learning and networking to cities around the country in 2010. eBay: On Location will kick off in Orlando in February, replacing the previously announced August date for eBay Live! Many sellers and buyers have told us that although eBay Live! is a terrific way to learn and network, they would enjoy more local events that don't require costly travel. eBay: On Location will provide just that - an easier way for you to come together, learn about eBay from experts and each other, network and, of course, celebrate. Our goal is to provide eBay: On Location within a day's drive for as many sellers and buyers as possible. eBay: On Location will deliver a compelling experience that will be easier on your wallet and require less valuable time away from your eBay business.
Finally, 2010 is another milestone year for eBay: our 15th anniversary. So what better way to celebrate than to throw a party! That's exactly what we'll do, wrapping up eBay: On Location in August with a 15th anniversary family-friendly event in San Jose, our hometown, to celebrate everything we've accomplished together.
We are looking forward to bringing eBay: On Location to a city near you in 2010 and seeing you at our 15th anniversary celebration in San Jose. We are currently planning exact cities and dates following our first event in Orlando in February. So keep an eye on the Announcement Board for further information, and visit www.ebayonlocationevents.com to sign up to receive email updates.
All my best,
Lorrie Norrington

***Unpatched Browser Security Hole - Keeping Yourself Secure*** |
 |
 |
 |
July 07, 2009 | 06:02PM PST/PT

| John Canfield |
Hello everyone...Yesterday Microsoft issued an alert regarding a vulnerability in the Microsoft DirectShow Active X control, a piece of software that is included with Internet Explorer. This vulnerability could be used to infect your computer with malicious software if you visit an untrusted website that is hosting a file that targets this vulnerability. There is not currently a patch for this specific issue but Microsoft has said that they are actively working on one and there are other precautions that will help keep you safe in the meantime.
Using up to date anti-virus software AND keeping your system up to date is the best way to protect your computers against exploits and viruses. Microsoft provides an automatic update feature for Windows that we recommend you enable so that you’ll receive the patch as soon as it is released. You can also run a one-time scan to ensure you have the latest security patches by going to the Microsoft Update page.
In addition to activating auto-update on Windows and other systems, we recommend:
- Having a recent version of anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware software with up-to-date signatures. eBay has partnered with several security industry leaders to offer our community free trial copies and discounts on their latest security products. Links to those partners can be found by visiting the eBay Security Center.
- Heeding all security warnings - never run un-trusted software or click on unexpected attachments. Also, never follow links to unknown or untrusted websites.
Taking these precautions can help ensure you have a safe browsing experience throughout the web. For more security information, tutorials, and free tools, please visit the eBay Security Center.
Sincerely,
John Canfield

How would you use $25,000 to start or grow your eBay business? Answer that one simple question with a basic business plan and video summation, and you can enter the eBay Sellers Challenge for a chance to win $25,000 to put your business on a faster track.
In partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the world’s largest foundation devoted to entrepreneurship, we are providing tips for success, advice for starting or growing a business and other resources for entrepreneurship at the Sellers Challenge website: http://sellerschallenge.ebay.com.
Entering the Sellers Challenge is simple. Just log on to sellerschallenge.ebay.com to submit your business plan, then create a short video to share your passion for selling on eBay and why you want to grow your business.
You can enter your plan in one of four categories:

***Updated: Start today! List 5 FREE every 30 days!*** |

 |
 |
June 16, 2009 | 08:22AM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
Effective today, pay no Insertion Fees on your first 5 qualifying Auction-style listings when you use the eBay Sell Your Item or Simple listing form. This is not a short-term promotion—it’s a change to eBay pricing. You can now list 5 items every 30 days and pay nothing unless your items sell.
The Final Value Fee for these first 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees will be 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower.
See the original May 12 announcement below for all options available for sellers.
Start selling!

Coming in June—5 Free Insertion Fees every 30 days for Auction-style listings*** |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 May 12, 2009 | 09:55AM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
Hi everyone,
I’ve got some exciting news about $0.00 Insertion Fees. Starting June 16, 2009, you’ll get 5 free Insertion Fees every 30 days for Auction-style listings.
Here’s how it works: Regardless of your start price, your first 5 Auction-style listings will have NO Insertion Fees when you list with eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form.
The Final Value Fee for these 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees will be 8.75% of the sales price or $20, whichever is lower. Any additional items sold during the same 30-day period will have the same Insertion Fees and Final Value Fees as they do today. Learn more.
Choose the option that works best for you, based on how you list:
- eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form – If you’re currently using one of these forms, you can either take advantage of the 5 free Insertion Fees every 30 days, or opt out by listing your items via an eBay tool or third-party listing solution.
- eBay tool or third-party listing solution – If you’re currently using one of these tools, you can either take advantage of this new pricing structure by listing your first 5 Auction-style listings every 30 days through eBay’s Sell Your Item form or Simple listing form, or continue with your current practices at the current pricing.
We’re continuing our efforts to lower the upfront costs of selling on eBay. The 5 listings with $0.00 Insertion Fees are especially helpful if you don’t sell a high volume, but offer the kind of unique and hard-to-find inventory buyers expect to find on eBay.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***ProStores Launches New Packages and Lower Pricing*** |
 |
 |
 |
June 15, 2009 | 10:51AM PST/PT

| Lin Shearer |
In order to provide greater value to small business merchants, ProStores has recently launched new product packages which include a more complete set of ecommerce features at a significantly reduced price.
The new offering includes two tiers: ProStores Professional eCommerce for $29.95/month (plus 0.5% successful transaction fee) and ProStores Professional eCommerce Plus for $59.95/month (plus 0.5% successful transaction fee). Merchants can now get the same, powerful set of ecommerce features that were included in our top two product tiers for up to 75% less than our previous pricing plans.
ProStores has also introduced new promotional offers for PowerSellers – including a subscription fee waiver for eBay PowerSellers at the Gold, Platinum, and Titanium levels. The eBay Stores promotional offer for ProStores has been discontinued (merchants who signed up for ProStores before May 26, 2009 and continue to subscribe to eBay Stores and ProStores will continue to receive the discounted ProStores subscription rate).
In addition to our new pricing plan, ProStores has released version 9.3, which delivers enhancements to help merchants deliver a better shopping experience to their buyers, streamlines setup for eBay sellers, and offers advice on how to improve storefronts to increase conversion rates.
View the newest features in ProStores 9.3.

***Updated: Changes to the eBay User Agreement*** |
 |
 |
 |
May 14, 2009 | 04:46PM PST/PT

| Scott Shipman |
On May 15, eBay will be releasing a revised user agreement. This revision will address the obligations of buyers and sellers in transactions where a buyer has alleged receipt of a counterfeit item.
Under the revised agreement:
- Buyers and sellers shall work in good faith during the resolution process to determine that the item is not counterfeit.
- If buyer and seller cannot determine that the item is not counterfeit, buyers are required to send the item back to the seller. Cost of return shipping will be paid by the buyer or eBay, unless both buyer and seller have agreed otherwise.
- Covered claims that meet the conditions and are not excluded will count as a violation by the seller of our prohibited and infringing items policy.
- If eBay determines the buyer is not acting in good faith, eBay may restrict or eliminate their ability to return items or make future claims.
- Sellers shall not list, advertise, or cause that item to appear for sale, barter or trade, on any eBay Inc. web site or service.
These revisions to the user agreement are being made to:
- Provide sellers protections against inaccurate counterfeit claims.
- Provide buyers assurances about the authenticity of the item received.
- Maintain integrity of the eBay marketplace.
The new User Agreement is effective immediately for new members registering on or after today, and on June 14, 2009, for current members. You don't need to do anything to accept the new User Agreement. If you don't wish to accept it, you can follow these instructions to close your account.
Sincerely,
Scott Shipman

Changes to the eBay User Agreement*** |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 May 04, 2009 | 02:00PM PST/PT

| Scott Shipman |
As part of the spring 2009 Update, announced on April 14, we introduced new programs that involve some changes to eBay’s User Agreement.
eBay Purchase Protection
The biggest change to the agreement is the addition of eBay Resolutions and the new eBay Purchase Protection policy. eBay is now going to run the purchase protection program instead of requiring buyers to go to PayPal. The new User Agreement incorporates the new policy and describes the legal parameters.
As with earlier updates to the User Agreement, we’ve made other minor changes to reflect eBay’s current product and service offerings and industry legal standards. You'll see references to, “eBay site, services and tools” where the old agreement simply reads, “eBay site.” These changes reflect the many new ways you can access eBay’s offerings through other websites, wireless devices, and tools. We’ve also highlighted a few sections of the agreement, based on our interpretation of state regulations.
The new User Agreement is effective immediately for new members registering on or after today, and on June 8, 2009, for current members. You don’t need to do anything to accept the new User Agreement. If you don't wish to accept it, you can follow these instructions to close your account.
Thank you for being a part of the eBay Community.
Sincerely,
Scott Shipman
Senior Counsel
eBay Inc.

***New Item Page*** |
 |
 |
 |
May 11, 2009 | 01:54PM PST/PT

| Renee VonBergen |
Hello Sellers,
A few weeks ago, we announced that our new item page would be rolling out to more buyers over the summer. Starting next week, we’ll be changing the view you see on your own listings.
Whenever you see your own listings, you'll see them in the new item page. This will give you an opportunity to see the new page before we start showing it to more and more buyers this summer. If you see any display issues, please let us know by clicking the "Send us your comments" link at the top right of the item description page. You can compare the new display with the previous display by clicking the "View in previous version" link in the same top right location.
The new eBay item page includes:
- Bigger, better pictures, with photo zoom coming later this summer
- Real-time countdown timer for Auction-style listings
- Key information right upfront
- Cross-merchandising: Sellers' relevant listings show up on other each other's item pages. (You can opt out of cross-merchandising with other sellers, but consider the trade-offs carefully—this is a great opportunity to boost exposure.)
Learn more about the new item page.
Sincerely,
Renee Von Bergen

***News for Sellers in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games *** |
 |
 |
 |
May 08, 2009 | 02:56PM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
A quick reminder: Now through the end of 2009, you pay only 5¢ Insertion Fees when you list books, music, movies, and video games on eBay.com in Fixed Price with product details. Your listings will show up on both the new eBay product pages and in search results. That’s double exposure for just 5¢. Plus, get Subtitle free with Fixed Price and Auction-style listings in these categories when you list with product details.
Also, as we announced back in March, Half.com sellers can now choose to have their listings show up on eBay product pages at no extra cost. Half.com listings will be displayed on eBay product pages but not in standard search results. With almost 60% of the inventory on Half.com not currently being offered on eBay, this will go a long way to delivering the selection buyers expect.
We're pulling out all the stops to make eBay a top shopping destination for books, music, movies and DVDs, and video games. That means giving you the pricing and exposure you need to succeed, so your buyers can get the deals and selection they demand. Watch for an all-out campaign to drive buyers to eBay – and to your listings.
Discover the best practices for getting more exposure for your listings in these categories — and check out the article on eBay Ink.

Dinesh Lathi

***USPS Rate Change Monday, May 11 2009*** |
 |
 |
 |
May 08, 2009 | 01:44PM PST/PT

As you probably know, United States Postal Service shipping prices and fees will change on Monday, May 11. You can find details about the new USPS rates here.
Here’s how eBay shipping solutions are affected by the USPS rate change:
Flat rate shipping
If you use flat rate shipping, review any listings you expect to ship after May 11 when the new prices are in effect, and make any necessary changes to your shipping cost.
You can edit your listings using bulk tools from Selling Manager, Selling Manager Pro, Turbo Lister, or eBay Stores. For more information on how to edit your listings, refer to Changing Your Listing and How Can I Revise My Listing? in our help section.
Calculated shipping
For listings that use the eBay Shipping Calculator, prices will automatically be updated around midnight (Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday, May 10. For more information on Calculated Shipping, visit our Shipping Calculator Help.
The new prices will also be reflected in the Research Rates calculator starting Friday night, May 8.
PayPal Label Printing Solution
New prices will be available in the PayPal Label Printing Solution after 9 pm (Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday, May 10. You can still print labels at the old prices for shipments to be posted on Monday, May 11.
The existing 5% and 8% discounts on Priority Mail International and Express Mail International will continue. If you haven’t yet taken advantage of the savings and convenience of PayPal Label Printing, there’s never been a better time to start!

***eBay Stores upgrade; news about searching*** |
 |
 |
 |
April 22, 2009 | 01:55PM PST/PT

eBay Stores upgrade: final reminder to check your Store!
eBay Stores has always been a great way for sellers to create their own brands on eBay. With new storefront templates and enhanced search results, the new eBay Stores format is even better—both for Stores sellers and their customers.
Most Stores sellers have chosen to upgrade and are currently benefitting from the new format and in early May, we will begin upgrading the rest of eBay Stores automatically. If you haven’t already done so, it’s important that you preview your Store and opt-in beforehand. Just go to My eBay and click “Manage My Store” in the Account menu.
For most Stores, the transition is seamless and requires no modification by the seller. If your Store has been significantly customized, you may need to make some changes. So be sure to check now, before the automatic upgrade begins.
For more details, please see our frequently asked questions.
Older search technology retiring in June
Almost all eBay buyers and sellers are now using eBay’s new search technology. We recently announced the older technology would be retired in April of this year, but the date is now extended to early June.
If you’re still using the older pages, we encourage you to give the new search a try—even if you tried it before. (Just click the “Try it now” link at the top the search page). Since it was first introduced, we received some great comments and suggestions, and we’ve used your feedback to make it even better:
- Results are returned faster than ever
- You see more of the items you want
- You can now customize your preferences for the left side of the page
- Window shopping in the snapshot view makes shopping even more fun
- “Related searches” and “exclude in category” searches are back!
We’ll continue to make the new search better, faster, and easier to use with more innovative ways to find what you’re looking for. We invite you to visit the search discussion board to share your thoughts and suggestions.
Sincerely,
The Finding and Stores Teams

***A Message to Sellers from Stephanie Tilenius: Spring 2009 Update*** |
 |
 |
 |
April 14, 2009 | 09:34AM PST/PT

| Stephanie Tilenius |
On behalf of eBay, let me open with two words: Thank you. We appreciate your business and the opportunity to strengthen our partnership with you. Together we can do what’s necessary to bring buyers to eBay and keep them coming back.
We also recognize the impact that major changes to eBay can have on your business. For that reason, we are grouping those changes into two or three major releases per year, with at least 60 days advance notice.
In 2009, there will be 2 significant releases. This post announces the first release, coming the week of June 15. The second release will be announced this summer and will go live in the early fall.
Here’s an overview of the changes launching the week of June 15. This release focuses on driving more sales and improving seller efficiency. Note there are no fee changes in this release.
The spring release is set up to deliver three things for our sellers:
- Easier, more visual shopping, plus buyer incentives to drive more sales
- New item page rolling out. New photo zoom coming later this year. Get your listings ready now.
- New eBay product pages surfacing to more buyers. To make sure your items show up on these pages, use product details (formerly called pre-filled item information).
- New way to list in Fixed Price lets you offer all variations of one product—e.g. color and size—in a single low-cost listing.
- Buyer incentives and loyalty programs expanded to drive more traffic.
- Key information to set buyer expectations and help reduce your costs
- New Smart FAQ answers buyers’ top 20 questions before they contact you.
- Package tracking information available in My eBay—print labels on eBay and tracking shows up automatically, or you can upload the information.
- Return policy and handling time required for new listings and re-listings beginning June 15. Deadline for updating your Good ‘Til Cancelled listings extended to mid-September.
- Use Item Specifics. Now in some categories, you can customize when the available choices don’t apply to your item.
- Category and Item Specifics changes now consolidated with the rest of updates—find out if your listings are impacted.
- Other updates to make selling on eBay more efficient
- New, more efficient process for handling disputes.
- Selling Manager FREE for all sellers—with powerful new Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro applications.
- Easier, faster way to pay shipping, print labels, and update buyers—right from eBay.
- Bulk editing tools available now.
Get more details on all these updates.
You’re also invited to:
Again, thank you for partnering to make eBay a successful marketplace. We believe these changes will improve your sales and the efficiency of selling on eBay.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Tilenius

Hi, everyone!
With over 90% of Motors members now using the new eBay Motors, we have decided that it’s time to fully transition to the new site experience. Starting today, you’ll see messages on the original eBay Motors home and search pages announcing that they will be retired on April 13th.
We’re thankful for all the feedback and great ideas we’ve received to make the new eBay Motors even better. Some of the more notable changes include:
- A faster site overall
- Tabs that make it easy to find what you’re looking for, including Local Classified listings
- Simplified, easier-to-use search pages
- A better way to search cars and parts by individual years or year ranges
- We’ve brought back the options to Search by Title & Description and Related Searches
The improvements don’t stop there – we will continue to make the new eBay Motors better, faster, and easier to use, with more innovative ways to search for cars and parts. So please keep sending in your thoughts and suggestions on the eBay Motors forum.

***Security Update: Conficker worm, passwords, and protecting your e-mail account *** |
 |
 |
 |
March 31, 2009 | 01:44PM PST/PT

| John Canfield |
Hi everyone…this is John Canfield, Senior Director of eBay’s Fraud Prevention Policy team. We are constantly working to keep eBay safe, and you also play an important role in your own online security.
You may have heard on the news that April 1 is a day of potential issues with a worm known as Conficker. The worm can be transmitted via infected USB drives, websites, or networks if a computer does not have the latest security updates. We have confirmed that visiting the eBay site alone will not expose your system to this worm, but having a secure computer is an important step to transacting safely on the web, so we encourage you to visit Microsoft’s page for protecting yourself against Conficker.
Strong passwords are also important to your online security. We recently introduced a new feature that makes it easy to strengthen your password. On the Change Password page, as you type in your new password, you’ll see feedback based on four criteria for how easy or difficult it is to guess. Your new password will be allowed only when you have passed each of the four criteria.
We also recommend that you have a secure password for your email account. Make sure you do not have the same username for your eBay and your e-mail accounts, and never use the same password across both accounts. This is important because fraudsters target e-mail accounts for takeover, and if they succeed, they have easier access to your other online accounts using Forgot My Password.
Thank you for your attention and cooperation in keeping eBay—and all your online transactions—safe.
Sincerely,
John Canfield
Senior Director Fraud Prevention Policy

***Beta launch of eBay Bucks rewards program *** |
 |
 |
 |
March 30, 2009 | 10:04AM PST/PT

| Kurt Apen |
Loyal buyers come to eBay for amazing deals. Now we’re adding a new reason for them to check eBay first. This week, on April 1, we’re launching a beta version of eBay Bucks, a new program that rewards buyers for their eBay purchases
During the beta, eBay Bucks will only be available to randomly selected eBay customers who receive an invitation via email and in their My Messages inbox in My eBay. Here’s how it works: those who get the invitation and enroll in the program will earn 2% in eBay Bucks on all qualifying purchases. After the end of every calendar quarter, participants will receive an eBay Bucks certificate and will have 30 days to spend it on eBay. The eligible period for earning during the beta is April 1 through June 30. Beta participants will receive their first eBay Bucks certificate on or about July 9.
During this beta, we’ll be listening carefully to customer reaction to inform plans for extending the program to more customers.
If you have questions, the eBay Bucks team will be available on the eBay Bucks discussion thread in the Buyer Central discussion board.
Sincerely,
Kurt Apen
Sr. Director, Loyalty Marketing

***Removal of the maximum of 10 listings per page per seller*** |
 |
 |
 |
March 17, 2009 | 03:00PM PST/PT

| Jeff King |
Starting this week, we will be displaying all listings in search according to their Best Match sort order, even when they’re from the same seller. Since July of last year, we’ve been showing a maximum of 10 listings per page, whether Fixed Price or Auction-style, from any one seller. Now that a track record of recent sales is a key factor in the sort order for Fixed Price, most sellers are consolidating their listings into fewer low-cost multi-quantity listings. This has proven to be the right strategy for sellers and a great shopping experience for buyers.
As a reminder: To get the best position for Fixed Price listings, we encourage sellers to focus on the following:
- Create effective, accurate listings with distinct and descriptive titles.
- Use the long duration (30-day or Good ‘Till Cancelled) multi-quantity format whenever appropriate.
- Offer free shipping.
Auction-style listings continue to be the best deal on eBay for low starting prices and they get a boost in exposure with time ending soonest.
To learn more, read about how to get ahead in Best Match search.
Sincerely,
Jeff King

***Seller special: 1¢ International Site Visibility listing upgrade March 17-27*** |
 |
 |
 |
March 16, 2009 | 04:30PM PST/PT

| John McDonald |
Hello everyone...This is John McDonald, Senior Director of eBay’s Seller Experience team. As you may already know, the International Site Visibility listing upgrade gives your items greater exposure on the UK site for a small fee. It’s a terrific opportunity to grow your potential buyer base by as much as one-third!
From tomorrow through March 27th, you can use the International Site Visibility upgrade for just 1¢ on your Auction-style listings. If you haven’t tried this feature yet, this is a great time to test it on your listings and see what it does for your business, especially if you have collectibles, unique items or products that are not available in the UK.
How it works
When you choose the International Site Visibility upgrade in the Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister and third-party tools like ChannelAdvisor, your item will be displayed in regular search results on eBay UK. This way, your item receives added exposure for less than it would cost to list directly on both eBay.com and eBay.co.uk.
For all the details about our promotion, and to learn more about the International Site Visibility listing upgrade, please see our promotion page.
Sincerely,
John McDonald
Senior Director
Seller Experience

***News for sellers in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games*** |
 |
 |
 |
March 10, 2009 | 10:36AM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
From now through the end of 2009, pay only 5¢ Insertion Fees when you list books, music, movies, and video games on eBay.com in Fixed Price with product details. Your listings will show up on both the new eBay product pages and in search results. That’s double exposure for just 5¢. Plus, get Subtitle free with Fixed Price and Auction-style listings in these categories when you list with product details.
We’re extending this promotion as part of our commitment to make eBay a top destination for books, music, movies and DVDs and video games. The goal: give today’s buyers the deals and selection they demand, and give sellers the pricing and exposure they need to succeed.
Also, starting in May, Half.com sellers will be able to choose to have their listings show up on eBay product pages at no extra cost. With almost 60% of the inventory on Half.com not currently being offered on eBay, this will go a long way to delivering the selection buyers expect.
Also in May, we will be launching an all-out consumer marketing campaign to bring buyers in these categories to eBay—and to your listings.
Find out the best practices for getting more exposure for your listings in these categories—and check out the article on eBay ink.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***Seller News*** |

 |
 |
March 04, 2009 | 02:38PM PST/PT

| Dinesh Lathi |
Double discounts for free shipping extended through June
The response from buyers and sellers continues to be fantastic, so we’re extending the promotional incentives we introduced last October through the end of June for sellers who offer free shipping:
- PowerSellers: Get double Final Value Fee discounts on all Fixed Price and Auction-style items with free shipping sold through June 30, 2009.
- All sellers: Get a free Subtitle upgrade on Auction-style and Fixed Price items listed with free shipping through June 30, 2009.
Get your eBay invoice in a new summary format
Starting this month, you can choose to get your eBay invoice in a new easy-to-read summary format or in the current detailed format.
The new summary invoice gives you an at-a-glance look at your billing activity instead of detailing individual transactions. This format includes total amounts for each type of discount, credit or fee.
Plus, you can now have your billing-related emails sent to a separate email address.
It's easy to get started with these new options. Just go to My eBay to set your preferences and select the invoice format that’s right for you.
Dutch Auction format discontinued
In mid May, we will discontinue Dutch Auctions, a little-used listing format in which sellers offer multiple-quantity items for sale in one Auction-style listing. This format – often confusing to both buyers and sellers – comprises only a small fraction of all Auction-style listings on eBay.
If you now list with the Dutch Auction format, you’ll have until mid May to convert those listings to another format, such as single-item Auction-style or multi-quantity Fixed Price. Dutch Auction listings that are live when the format is discontinued will be allowed to run to their conclusion, and Good ‘Til Cancelled Dutch Auctions will reset to a quantity of one when relisted.
Although we are retiring this one particular auction format, I want to emphasize that eBay remains committed to Auction-style listings. We value the format, and will continue to support other forms of Auction-style listings going forward.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***News about searching on eBay*** |
 |
 |
 |
February 19, 2009 | 02:26PM PST/PT

| Jeff King |
Hi everyone...This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Last year we introduced new search technology that makes it faster and easier to find just what you’re looking for on eBay. In a nutshell, it looks at a multitude of details in listings to deliver more of the results you want. It makes it easy to browse and narrow your selection, and lets you choose how you want to see the results. With the new auto-complete feature it even "anticipates" what you're typing in the search box. Get a closer look and some great tips for searching.
The response from the Community to the new finding has been great—today the vast majority of eBay buyers and sellers are using it. Some of you have sent great ideas for making it even better. We've incorporated a lot of these suggestions already and in the coming months we’ll be introducing more new features and enhancements to make it even faster and easier.
Sellers: Use product details!
For sellers, we’re continuing to expand opportunities to use product details in listings. Be sure to use them--it's one of the best ways to boost your exposure in the new search.
Retiring the older technology
Until now, buyers and sellers have been able to choose not to use the new search engine. With more than 90% of you now on board, we’ll be retiring the older technology in April of 2009. If you are one of the few who’s opted out, you’ll see some reminder messages during your searches.
On behalf of the whole Finding team, thank you for your support and insight.
Sincerely,
Jeff King
Senior Director of Finding

***Changes to Pre-filled Item Information *** |
 |
 |
 |
February 13, 2009 | 09:06AM PST/PT

| Mike Maffeo |
Hi Everyone,
This is Mike Maffeo from the Seller Team. I'm here to tell you about some changes to the listing process for categories that offer pre-filled item information.
When you list an item in these categories, eBay can automatically fill in product details and even add a stock photo. Taking advantage of this feature is a best practice because it saves you time, makes it easier for you to list an item, and increases your exposure to buyers who are using standard search engines or online shopping comparison sites to find specific products on eBay. (Read more about pre-filled information here.)
There are two changes that will affect listings in all categories that offer the option of pre-filled item information:
1) The term "pre-filled item information" is changing to "product details".
2) If you use Bulk Revise to edit multiple listings at one time, you can now add product details to your listings automatically in these categories.
A few additional changes apply only to listings in the Blenders, DVD Players, and Vacuums categories: eBay is making it easier to add product details when you relist an item. During the relisting process, you will be taken to the “find your product page” where you can add product details if your original listing did not use them. This change also applies to when you relist more than one listing at a time with Selling Manager. You always have the ability to skip this step and continue on with the relist process without adding product details.
When you relist items that do not have product details in the Vacuums and DVD Players categories, eBay will occasionally recommend products that match the information in your listing. You can reject or accept the eBay recommendation and continue with relisting.
These changes are part of eBay’s ongoing effort to make it easier for you to list your items – and for buyers to find them.
Sincerely,
Mike Maffeo
Seller Team

***Free Picture Price change*** |
 |
 |
 |
February 12, 2009 | 01:48PM PST/PT

| Greg Fant |
Hello everyone...I’d like to share some news regarding fee changes for eBay-hosted pictures that we’re making in the Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass categories. The first eBay-hosted picture in an item is already free.
Effective February 18, 2009, we are making all additional pictures, Picture Pack and Gallery Plus FREE for listings in all four categories on the US site (www.ebay.com). This includes all formats and all durations.
eBay is committed to providing a great experience to its users. Buyers in these categories have asked for more photos to help them decide which items to compare and which item to purchase. We believe that more free photos will allow sellers to provide buyers the visual details they need to make these decisions, lower buyer questions, and increase seller sales.
By the way, we're also working on improving the visual shopping experience for buyers with new ways to browse and view multiple, large pictures, which should further increase the benefits of free pictures for both sellers and buyers. Stay tuned for more information about these upcoming visual enhancements.
We’re excited to make these changes, and believe they will enhance the marketplace on eBay for everyone. I encourage you to click here for full pricing details.
Sincerely,
Greg Fant

Hi Everyone, this is Matt from the Finding team. We’ve made some important design updates to eBay’s Books, Music, Movies and Video Games product pages (i.e. the pages you see when you click on "Matching Products" in search results). The new page makes it faster and easier for buyers to find the book, music, movie or game item they’re looking for from sellers they trust.
Take a look at the new pages, along with seller tips for getting the best position for your listings. Sellers’ items will appear on these pages when they list with a catalog product (also known as pre-filled item information).

***eBay’s Global Buying Hub now in 13 languages*** |
 |
 |
 |
February 03, 2009 | 02:23PM PST/PT

| Justin Marcucci |
Buying and selling around the world just got easier with the eBay Global Buying Hub, now in 13 languages. From the eBay Global Buying Hub, buyers from any country can search sellers’ listings from any of the 16 local eBay sites throughout the world—from one convenient location.
How does the Global Buying Hub work for buyers?
Just go to http://global.ebay.com, designate your home country, and select one of 13 supported languages. The Global Buying Hub interface appears in your language, with your country’s currency and time zone. When you search, you’ll see relevant products listed on any eBay site from sellers who’ve indicated they’ll ship to your country.
The eBay Global Buying Hub is especially helpful when:
- You live in a country without its own eBay site. No need to search each eBay site individually. Now you can find the best deals all in one place.
- You are looking for a rare product from another country. The Global Buying Hub will allow you to find products quickly from any eBay seller anywhere in the world.
- You want to take advantage of cost savings with currency fluctuations.
The Global Buying Hub can help you find timely deals based on swings in currency values.
To learn more about using the Global Buying Hub, see the Global Buying Guide.
How does the Global Buying Hub work for sellers?
When you create your listings on eBay.com, just specify that you’ll ship worldwide or choose specific countries or regions. Your listings will automatically be included in Global Buy Hub search results—at no extra cost.
Learn more about International Selling.
Sincerely,
Justin Marcucci

Coming Soon: New Discussion Board Improvements & Special Maintenance Outage*** |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 January 27, 2009 | 11:18AM PST/PT

| Garnor Morantes |
Hi everyone...This is Garnor Morantes, and I help manage our Online Forums. As
many of you know firsthand, eBay’s Discussion Boards have been an important part of the eBay
experience for many years. With many forums on all kinds of subjects –from
Selling and Buying to Clothing and Collectibles --- our forums help members connect with
others for business and for fun.
Hundreds of thousands of members participate in our discussion
boards every day. If you haven’t visited already, we encourage you to
browse and see what they have to offer – and if you see a discussion that interests
you, add your own thoughts or tips.
Coming soon – A New look, plus some cool new features
Next week, we’ll be upgrading the discussion boards to offer several new features;
along with a new look that is more “eBay.” Here are the highlights:
- More Personalization and Layout Options. In addition to showing My World profile images, we’re
providing tools that will allow you to quickly access those discussion topics that are
most important to you.
- Time-saving Features. Hover over a discussion thread
title and catch a glimpse of the conversation that’s taking place before you decide
to click into the thread. We’ll also rotate through some discussion board posts at
the bottom of certain pages that let you see what people are currently talking about.
- Enhanced Control Over Your Experience. Sort from newest to oldest,
change the number of threads appearing on a board hub page, or automatically
“quote” an earlier post. The upgrade provides more ways you can tailor
your experience, so that you get what you need fast.
US Discussion Boards Unavailable from 4 p.m. to Midnight PT on Tuesday,
February 3rd
In order to add these new upgrades, eBay Discussion Boards will be taken offline on
Tuesday, Feb. 3rd from approximately 4 p.m. Pacific time to midnight. Once we’re back
online, I hope you’ll go in and check out all the new features.
Our team will also be around after the launch to answer your questions about the new
discussion boards experience. In the meantime, check out our Launch
Board for a couple of examples of what the new experience will look like.

The classical music catalog includes over 140,000 products. Sellers can now leverage this catalog to list their items using eBay's listing tools, as well as some popular third-party tools.
With catalogs, sellers can create listings faster using pre-filled information. And catalog listings contain a more accurate description of the item, so buyers can find your products faster and easier.
