***Upcoming Workshops: Wholesale Pricing, Skype for Customer Service, Buying Safely, Pricing of Freight Shipping, and Getting Holiday Shoppers*** |
 |
 |
 |
November 30, 2007 | 05:43PM PST/PT

We would like to invite you to attend the following workshops this week:
Understanding Wholesale Pricing
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.
Understanding wholesale pricing is very important to running your business. If you don't understand the different pricing tiers, you may get discouraged when you see other retailers selling the same product for a cheaper price. Colette Marshall, Business Development Manager for product sourcing experts WorldwideBrands.com, will help you understand how the wholesale structure works when it comes to purchasing products, and how to compete with the current market, even if you can’t get the best possible price.
Use Skype to Close More Business
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.
Looking for new, efficient ways to move your business forward? Need to boost long-term loyalty and referrals? Join Pat Kelley from OnState to learn how OnState ACD for Skype is the cost-effective, scalable call center that can differentiate your customer service.
How to Buy Safely Online
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 5th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.
The holiday season is now in full swing, and that means plenty of online shopping fun. And in the frenzy of all that gift buying for your friends and family, we're here to help you do it as safely as possible. Please join PayPal, eBay Trust and Safety and the Federal Trade Commission for a workshop on how to buy safely online. We'll include tips how to avoid identity theft, and how to spot phishing emails and spoof web sites. We'll also offer some additional steps you can take to protect your account. If you want to get the best out of your holiday online experience while remaining safer, this workshop is for you. In the meantime, make sure to visit the FTC's OnGuard Online site to view their 10 Tips for Smart Holiday Shopping.
Best Practices In Pricing of Freight and Options
This workshop will be held on Thursday, December 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.
Join the Freightquote team as they present the various options that are available when shipping large or heavy items. You will also get tips and information for shipping furniture, shipping freight or shipping express, and info on packaging requirements and special services. Join this workshop to learn how to save money, avoid damage, and generally minimize headaches when you need to ship large items you are selling or buying.
How to Get those Last Minute Holiday Shoppers
This workshop will be held on Friday, December 7th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.
With only a couple of weeks left in the holiday shopping season, the smart eBay seller knows how important it is to select end times carefully in order to optimize profits! In this workshop, the team at Terapeak will look at the best time to end your listings for those last-minute eBay holiday shoppers. Using the research from Terapeak, which is based on actual closed listing data from eBay, you can leverage past transactional information to improve your future listings and make more money.
Workshops are hosted in discussion threads on the Workshops Board. To get to the Workshops Board:
- Go to www.ebay.com
- Click on Community at the top of the page
- Click on "Workshops" in the "Events" section
- This will bring you to the threaded Workshops Board

Hi everyone...I'm here to let you know it's time again for our eBay Groups Holiday Open House. Last year's Holiday Open House was a lot of fun (and informative) for Group members and newcomers alike, and this year looks to be even better.

For Sellers: Please check your product model numbers and refrain from listing any items that are part of this recall. Any currently listed items that are included in the recall should be ended.
For Buyers: If you believe an item you are interested in bidding on or purchasing may be part of this recall, we encourage you to use the Ask Seller a Question feature to verify.

***News from Rob Chesney: Try Out The New eBay Motors*** |
 |
 |
 |
November 26, 2007 | 12:12PM PST/PT

| Rob Chesney |
Hi everyone...I'm Rob Chesney, Vice President of eBay Motors. As many people know, we've been testing a new version of the eBay Motors site since February (Read my previous announcement).
Our goal is simple - make eBay Motors a one-stop destination for people shopping for vehicles or auto parts and accessories.
It's easy to get started – buyers can browse by car type or jump right to a particular make/model. And because buyers in these categories often need to do their homework before making a purchase, we've integrated industry-leading research and other information right into the shopping experience. We've also added new ways to refine searches to help them easily find what they're looking for. Check out our tutorial for an overview of these changes.
Thank you for your input
The Motors team and I would like to thank the thousands of members who have helped us test the new Motors site over the last several months. Your feedback has been invaluable as we've worked to fine-tune these changes. In fact, we've made significant changes based on the input you've given us. For instance, we've moved the navigation and search options from the top of the page to the left-hand side of search results so that more listings display higher on the page. We've also made it possible to browse across an entire category – such as browsing all of "Boats" – which was difficult to do before. Finally, we've heard you loud and clear, and have added back the ability to search by both title and description.
Try out the new eBay Motors! A Phased Introduction
I'm very pleased to let you know we're ready to make the new eBay Motors available to the entire Community. While you'll still see the current site as the default, you'll be able to try out the new version at any time starting soon.
This will start a phased introduction of the new site – we want you to get used to the new features and look on your own schedule. Use the "Try it now" link on our search results pages to get to the new site. You'll also be able to switch back to the current eBay Motors site if you wish.
If you were part of our earlier tests, you'll continue to see the new eBay Motors by default (although you can switch back to the current eBay Motors).
Early next year we will make the new eBay Motors the default experience, although you'll still be able to switch back to the current site. Later in 2008, we’ll make the new eBay Motors the standard for all customers.
Keeping sending us your comments
While we're out of our official testing phases, we're always looking to improve the site. Keep using the survey and the eBay Motors discussion forum to share your thoughts and suggestions.
On behalf of the entire eBay Motors team, thanks for your support, and happy holidays!
Sincerely,
Rob Chesney
Vice President, eBay Motors

***Best of eBay*** |
 |
 |
 |
November 19, 2007 | 02:21PM PST/PT

| Nii Ahene |
Hi everyone...this is Nii Ahene from eBay's Engagement team. Remember the toasted cheese sandwich that looked like the
Virgin Mary? Or the inflatable life-size church? While eBay has always been a great place to buy and sell – it's also been a
haven for those of us with a penchant for the quirky, the unusual, or the inspiring. I’m here to announce the arrival of the
Best of eBay, which will showcase the most popular, eccentric,
interesting and unique listings on eBay.
One of the greatest things about this is that the “best” is determined by the people who come to eBay every day to buy, sell,
interact and have fun. The Best of eBay lets you nominate the most interesting listings, vote on your favorite ones, and
talk about them with others.
Here are some details:
- Nominate Listings. As an eBay member, you can nominate listings you find on eBay – they can be fun, eccentric,
different, interesting…whatever captures your attention! Just look for the "Nominate to Best of eBay" button and follow the
instructions.
- Place Your Votes. Vote for the nominated listings and see which ones rise to the top. Voting is easy – you just
click on the "Vote for this Item" button icon located to the right of each item.
- Make Your Voice Heard. Add your comments to the Best of eBay nominees to back up your votes. You can also share
your favorite nominees with all your friends with the "Email to a Friend" link at the bottom of each listing.
Remember, Best of eBay is nominated and voted on by you, so find those
listings and place your votes! To learn more, visit the Best of eBay page at bestof.ebay.com
Sincerely,
Nii Ahene

***Upcoming Workshops: Taxes 101, Email Marketing, & the Shipping area on SYI *** |
 |
 |
 |
November 16, 2007 | 01:46PM PST/PT

We would like to invite you to attend the following workshops next week:
All About Sales and Use Taxes
This workshop will be held on Monday, November 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.
When it comes to selling on the Internet, navigating your way through sales and use tax issues can be a tricky order! Do I have to pay when I'm selling personal items? Who do I pay, and how? Do I charge sales tax on shipping? In this seminar we'll be talking about the who-what-when-where-why and HOW of state sales and use tax issues. Join us for this session and learn how to keep your business on the right track
How to Increase Your Sales with Email Relationship Marketing
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.
In the vast expanse of the Internet, the online shopping experience frequently feels impersonal and generic to your buyers. In 2008 small business owners who invest time in building a relationship with their customers will come out the clear winners. Please join Lisa Suttora Founder/CEO of Certified Provider WhatDoISell.com and best-selling author of "What to Sell on eBay and Where to Get It" (from McGraw-Hill publishers) as she discusses how to use Email Relationship Marketing to engage your customers, foster buyer loyalty, and grow your business to new heights.
The shipping section in the Sell Your Item Form
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 20th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. . Pacific time.
Shipping is one of the most critical elements in your eBay listing. Please join the seller experience product management team as they review the recent changes to the shipping section, explain the various tools we provide so sellers can estimate shipping costs, and answer any questions concerning shipping and the sell your item form.
Workshops are hosted in discussion threads on the Workshops Board. To get to the Workshops Board:
- Go to www.ebay.com
- Click on Community at the top of the page
- Click on "Workshops" in the "Events" section

***eBay Giving Works: Spotlight on a Cause*** |
 |
 |
 |
November 15, 2007 | 03:56PM PST/PT

| Jennifer Ibarra |
Hi everyone, this is Jennifer Ibarra with eBay Giving Works. As we head into the holiday season, many of us are thinking about the gifts we plan to give (and perhaps wishing for a few we hope to receive!) For many of us, this is also the time of year we reflect on the world around us and support the causes we're passionate about.
As Kristin mentioned in her previous announcement we have several exciting campaigns that I want to tell you about. As you contemplate this holiday season of giving, I'd like to share with you information about an exciting contest we're kicking off this week!
Spotlight on a Cause
Throughout the year, we rally the Community around various causes to raise money and awareness – you may know these as our regular Spotlight on a Cause campaigns. We're featuring several worthy causes right now through the months of November and December. Please visit Spotlight on Children in Need, Spotlight on Global Poverty, and Spotlight on Fighting AIDS, to buy and sell items to support certified nonprofit organizations doing very important work in these areas.
7th on Sale charity auction
We are also incredibly happy to welcome back the 7th on Sale charity auction as part of the Spotlight on Fighting AIDS campaign. More than 6,000 one-of-a-kind -- and often celebrity-owned -- clothing and other fabulous finds will be included in 7th on Sale this year. The items are available online on eBay, beginning November 15, and at the public sale slated for November 16, 17 and 18 in New York City.
Similar to the event held on eBay in 2005, these luxury items donated directly from celebrities and designers will be listed and available for you to bid on, with 100% of the proceeds being distributed by the New York City AIDS Fund to various HIV and AIDS organizations.
Beneficiaries over the years have included dozens of worthy organizations, including AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA), Alpha Workshops, amfAR, Gay Men's Health Crisis, God's Love We Deliver, Greenhope Services for Women, Harlem United Community AIDS Center, HIV Law Project, and the Latino Commission on AIDS.
"Shoot. Share. Win!" video contest
Since 2003, eBay Giving Works has helped thousands in the eBay Community raise funds for a wide variety of incredible causes. Together, we have helped rescue animals, rebuild homes for disaster survivors, fund research to find cures for diseases, provide food and shelter for those struggling to make ends meet, give children hope for a brighter future, and much more.
Are you one of the many people who has made a lasting impact on your community or the world around you with eBay Giving Works? Share your story and you could win $5,000!
The eBay Giving Works "Shoot. Share. Win!" video contest will run from November 15 to December 5. Simply submit a 30-60 second video testimonial telling us how eBay Giving Works has helped you make a difference for your organization, or an organization you support. The Community will vote for one grand prize winner in three categories (Buyer, Seller, and Nonprofit), with each grand prize winner winning $5,000.
Don't have a video to submit? Share in the fun by voting for the winners between December 20 to January 2, and you could be one of five lucky voters will win a $1,000 shopping spree on eBay!
For more details on how to submit a video, or participate in the voting sweepstakes, please visit http://www.ebay.com/shootsharewin.
We appreciate all your support this holiday season, and wish you happy bidding (and filming)!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Ibarra

***Updated: The New My eBay*** |
 |
 |
 |
November 15, 2007 | 03:12PM PST/PT

| Blair Hamilton |
Hi everyone. I'm back with an update about the new My eBay. You've probably heard about the beta version of the new My eBay through our Sneak Peek page or my previous announcement. But in case you haven't, we've been testing out the new beta version of My eBay with a small group of members for the past few months (read my initial note below for all the details).
We've received some great feedback, and have incorporated several suggestions that we think will make the new version of My eBay an even more powerful tool for our members. We're also going to start transitioning our newer members to the new version of My eBay in the next few days.
New features
Here are some of the key improvements we've made recently:
- More watched items are displayed on the My eBay Today page.
- A new item preview layer. Just hover with your mouse over the item picture or Enlarge link to see the preview.
- New Shortcuts module. This new area contains links to important eBay pages. Even better, you can customize this list any way you want, or even create your own shortcuts.
We're also adding "Selling Totals" -- a highly requested feature -- in the next few weeks. This will allow sellers to quickly find out how their sales are doing in terms of the total number as well as the dollar value.
What happens next?
In the next few days, we're going to make the new My eBay the default view for about 25% of our members, most of whom will be relatively new to eBay. You’ll still be able to opt-out and use the current version if you wish. In 2008, we'll begin making the new My eBay the default for more of our members.
Sincerely,
Blair Hamilton

The New My eBay - Initial Beta Invitation*** |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 August 29, 2007 | 03:08PM PST/PT

| Blair Hamilton |
Hello everyone...I'm Blair Hamilton, a product manager for My eBay. It's a big week around here for the My eBay team! We're thrilled to announce the beta launch of the new My eBay. (You may have read about the new My eBay at www.ebay.com/sneakpeek or seen our eBay Chatter blog post.)
After months and months of research, product design and development, and many discussions with buyers and sellers, we're excited for members to start kicking the tires. Over the next few days, we'll be inviting a small percentage of Community members to experience the new My eBay beta. People in this randomly selected group should receive an email in My Messages very soon.
This beta invitation is completely optional, and you can enter and leave the new beta at any time. However, your participation in the beta is really important to us, and we hope you will use the new functionality, and let us know what you think.
Didn't receive an invitation? Don't worry – you can join the beta soon! We'll be extending our invitation to join the beta to more members in the next several weeks.
As I said, we really want and need your input and feedback! Plus, we hope you are excited to try this new experience, too. Some of the more noteworthy and exciting features of the new My eBay that I hope inspire you include:
- Item Preview – View pertinent details and larger pictures of an item you are watching or bidding on without going to the view item page.
- Re-bid from My eBay - Increase your max bid without leaving My eBay.
- Meet the Seller - See a snapshot of critical seller information such as Detailed Seller Ratings, and links to a Seller's eBay Store or other items.
- Personal notes for all your items - Leave yourself helpful reminders, such as "this is the size I need" or "this is the color Mom wants."
- Personalized item recommendations - Based on your previous activity, eBay will offer new suggestions for items you might like.
Tentative Launch Plans
Everyone at eBay understands how important My eBay is to buyers and sellers. For many people, My eBay is the hub of their daily eBay activity. Because it's so central, we want to make sure you know what to expect during the launch.
We're taking a slow, cautious approach to testing and rolling this out to the Community. We've shared our tentative timeline below, although these times and plans can change if we encounter unexpected issues:
- Next few days - Less than 1% of our members will be invited to opt in to our Beta.
- Early September - An increased number of eBay members will be able to opt-in to see the new My eBay beta. You will be able to "opt-out," or switch back to the current My eBay experience, as often and whenever you like.
- End of October - Additional features will be added to the new My eBay.
- Early 2008 – Start to migrate buyers and sellers to the new My eBay.
As always, your feedback and support is appreciated. Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and more My eBay news. And please send us your thoughts, comments, ideas at myebaybeta@ebay.com.
Sincerely,
Blair Hamilton
