January 30, 2009 | 05:13PM PST/PT

A severe winter storm has affected many communities from Texas to Maine disrupting power, communication and transportation lines. If you are involved in an eBay transaction with a member in this affected area, this is a reminder their ability to complete the transaction may be delayed, and we encourage your patience.

Our thoughts go out to our affected Community members and their families in this region.

***Message from John Canfield: Protecting Your Computer Against Viruses***

January 22, 2009 | 12:56PM PST/PT

John Canfield

Hello everyone...Using up to date anti-virus software AND keeping your system up to date is the best way to protect your computers against exploits and viruses.
An internet worm is currently infecting unprotected PC's. In October of last year, Microsoft released a critical patch to protect against this worm. Once a computer is infected with this worm, it could steal your usernames and passwords, or alter your browsing experience in dangerous ways.

The best way to keep safe from vulnerabilities is to keep your system up-to-date with the latest security patches. Microsoft provides an automatic update feature for Windows we recommend you enable. You can also run a one-time scan to ensure you have the latest security patches by going to the Microsoft Update page.

In addition to activating auto-update on Windows and other systems, we recommend:

* Having a recent version of anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware software with up-to-date signatures
* Heeding all security warnings - never run un-trusted software or click on unexpected attachments.

Taking these precautions can help insure you have a safe browsing experience throughout the web. For more security information, tutorials, and free tools, please visit the eBay Security Center.

Sincerely,
John Canfield

***New eBay Stores Experience***

January 13, 2009 | 03:07PM PST/PT

Nick Donelson

Hello…this is Nick Donelson from the Seller Experience Team. For years, eBay Stores have been a great tool for sellers looking to create their own brands on eBay. With this in mind, we’re excited to let you know about our launch of a new eBay Stores Experience.  Improvements include new storefront templates and enhancements to Stores search results. These changes will improve the look of your Store, while enhancing your customers’ shopping experience.

New Store templates: Sharp, professional designs and merchandising features to help you attract and retain more buyers.

Enhanced search results:

  • Searches within your Store will include titles, categories, item specifics, and even similar keywords for more relevant results.
  • Shoppers will enjoy a more consistent, streamlined buying experience throughout the eBay site.

Any time between now and the end of March 2009, you can preview how your Store will look in the new eBay Stores Experience.  If you like what you see, you can opt in to the new experience right away.  After March, all Stores will be automatically upgraded.

Note to Store Sellers:  We strongly encourage you to preview your eBay Store soon, especially if it is heavily customized.  We’ve worked hard to ensure that most eBay Stores will upgrade seamlessly, with little or no modifications required by sellers.  Some heavily-customized Stores may require more manual modifications, however. Through March, you can continue to use the current eBay Stores experience, while you optimize your Store to take full advantage of the new experience upgrade.

So don’t wait for the automatic upgrade! Preview your Store’s new look now. If you like what you see, you can start taking advantage of the new features right away. For more details, please see our frequently asked questions.

Best regards,
Nick Donelson,
Seller Experience

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi - Update to the Feedback Removal Policy, New Payment Methods and Other Important News***

January 08, 2009 | 01:00PM PST/PT

Dinesh Lathi

Hello everyone…We hope you enjoyed the holidays.  My team and I are looking forward to kicking things off in 2009. I’d like to provide you with a few important selling-related updates and reminders you should be aware of as you prepare your listings for the new year.

Update to Feedback Removal Policy – Customs Fees
Many of our cross-border sellers have asked for help when they receive a negative/neutral Feedback rating because they wouldn’t mark an item as “gift” in order to sidestep customs fees. eBay will now remove Feedback if a) the listing meets the Customs Requirements below and b) the seller receives a negative or neutral Feedback comment which references customs delays or customs fees.

The following text, or very similar wording, must be included in the listing and be:

  • In the format below
  • In a font size no smaller than the majority of the other text in the item description
  • Prominently displayed (in the upper half of the description, free-standing, etc.)

International Buyers – Please Note:

  • Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility.
  • Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.”

In addition, sellers may wish to include additional helpful statements for their buyers, such as:

  • “These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.”
  • “We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as ‘gifts’ - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior.”

To learn more, please read eBay’s Feedback Removal Policy.

New Approved Payment Methods -- Moneybookers and Paymate
In February, we’ll be adding two new electronic payment methods to the permitted payments list in the Accepted Payments Policy: Moneybookers and Paymate. These are established payment methods that increase the safe choices available to our buyers and sellers, which currently include PayPal, credit and debit card payment to a seller’s merchant account, Propay or Pay on Pick-up. To learn more about these new payment methods, visit www.moneybookers.com/partners/us/ebay and www.paymate.com/eBay.  Please note, Propay also plans to open up its payment service to all levels of Powersellers starting January 22.  For more information about Propay, go to www.Propay.com/eBay

Better integration for Internet Merchant Accounts
For sellers who currently accept payments to an Internet merchant account, we‘re improving the checkout experience to make payments more convenient and secure for you and your buyers.  Buyers will be able to pay sellers directly to their Internet merchant account by entering their credit card information in eBay’s secure checkout instead of sending information via phone or email. You will need to sign up for a Payflow Gateway account in March to connect your Internet merchant account to eBay.  This service will be available to sellers with an Internet merchant account at no additional cost. For more details on these changes and how to take advantage of this new service, please read our Frequently Asked Questions.

Seller Checklist – Listing update reminders
Finally, be sure to review our Seller Checklist  at www.ebay.com/checklists for details on these important updates you’ll want to make to your listings:

1) Book, Music, DVDs & Movies and Video Game listings with shipping charges over the maximums in the item descriptions should now be removed.
2) References to checks and/or money orders, or any other payment method not permitted on eBay.com, should be removed from item descriptions by January 15.
3) If you are shipping globally, add customs “disclaimer” text to your description to protect your Feedback.
4) A return policy and handling time must be specified in your listings by mid-March.

The above topics will form the agenda for our first Town Hall of 2009 on Wednesday, Jan 14th from 3-5pm Pacific. Stay tuned for details, we hope you’ll join us.

Thank you for your support – and we look forward to working with you again this year. Here’s to a successful 2009!

Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi
Vice President,
Seller Experience

In October, eBay Ink (www.ebayinkblog.com) covered the background and rationale around this decision, which I encourage you to read. For more details, please see the Animals & Wildlife policy.

***A Message from John Canfield – Protecting your PC ***

December 18, 2008 | 02:46PM PST/PT

John Canfield
Hello everyone...Protecting your computers against exploits and viruses is one of the most important online security measures you can take.

Yesterday, Microsoft released a critical patch for a recent Internet Explorer vulnerability. This vulnerability opens a new way for unsafe web pages to insert malware onto your computer. Once a computer is infected with malware, it could steal your usernames and passwords, or alter your browsing experience in dangerous ways.

The best way to keep safe from vulnerabilities is to keep your system up-to-date with the latest security patches. Microsoft provides an automatic update feature for Windows that we recommend you enable. You can also run a one-time scan to ensure you have the latest security patches by going to the Microsoft Update page.

In addition to activating auto-update on Windows and other systems, we recommend:

  • Having a recent version of anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware software with up-to-date signatures
  • Heeding all security warnings – never run un-trusted software or click on unexpected attachments.

Taking these precautions can help insure you have a safe browsing experience throughout the web. For more security information, tutorials, and free tools, please visit the eBay Security Center.

Sincerely,

John Canfield

***A Message from Jeff King -- Update on Multiple Identical Listings ***

    November 18, 2008 | 03:41PM PST/PT

    Jeff King
Hi.. This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Starting this week we will be showing all identical listings from the same seller for Fixed Price items in search. Since July 30, we had been showing just one listing to ensure that buyers see relevant items from a variety of trusted sellers. Now that a track record of recent sales is a key factor in the sort order for Fixed Price, most sellers are combining identical items into single, multi-quantity, 30-day listings. This has proven to be the right strategy for sellers and a great shopping experience for buyers. Please note that we are continuing to show a maximum of 10 listings per page -- whether Fixed Price or Auction-style -- from any one seller.

To get the best position for Fixed Price listings this holiday season, we encourage sellers to focus on the following:

          • Create effective, accurate listings with distinct and descriptive titles.
          • Use the long duration (30-day or Good ‘Till Cancelled) multi-quantity format whenever appropriate.
          • Offer free shipping.

To learn more, read about how to get ahead in Best Match search.

    Sincerely,

    Jeff King
    Senior Director, Finding

    ***Now Available: eBay AdCommerce***

    November 12, 2008 | 01:36PM PST/PT

    Caroline Malifaud

Hi everyone...I'm Caroline Malifaud with eBay's Advertising team. I'm pleased to let you know that our new advertising program eBay AdCommerce (announced earlier) is now live at www.adcommerce.com.

AdCommerce is a pay-per-click advertising solution that allows eBay sellers to advertise their listings and eBay Stores via a text ad on eBay search result pages.

    How eBay AdCommerce works:
For example, let's say you want your ad to appear when buyers shop for computers. First you would need to decide how much you're willing to pay each time a buyer clicks your ad after running a search for the keyword "computer”. You could also choose to advertise across an entire category or sub category.

If you're one of the highest bidders for that keyword or category, your ad -- which can include a title, a short description, and an optional image -- will appear near the bottom of search results pages. Buyers will see your ad, click on it and hopefully buy your items!

    Get started now
It will take you only a few minutes to register and create your first ad, and there is no up-front fee or minimum payment. To get started now, or read more about the service, go to www.adcommerce.com!

    Sincerely,

    Caroline Malifaud

***A Message from Greg Fant: Marketing Update***

    November 06, 2008 | 09:21AM PST/PT

    Greg Fant
Hi everyone...this week marks the beginning of our holiday campaign. We've been working on what we feel are some great programs that will drive buyers to the site for the benefit of all of you, the many sellers and businesses who make up the eBay marketplace. In this tough economy, shoppers will be exceptionally cost-conscious, and our marketing initiatives reinforce the message that the greatest deals can be found on eBay – we'll be saying this earlier, louder and in a more integrated way than ever.

Plus, we've invested in new programs that will work hard to deliver on this promise. Find out how buyers and sellers can take advantage of these great programs.

    Microsoft Live Search Cashback
Shoppers who arrive at eBay through Microsoft Live Search can receive up to 30% cash back on the purchase of any eligible fixed-price item when using a PayPal account through the Microsoft Live Search cashback program. When used to purchase items that are already offered at a deep discount, this represents significant savings for our customers.

    Coupons
eBay coupons will be distributed to millions of eligible eBay customers throughout the season. You can't miss it – coupons will be displayed throughout the site and in customers' My eBay accounts. Actual percentage offers will vary, and all coupons are valid on any auction-style of fixed price listings when PayPal is used. They'll be offered for a very limited time to get customers shopping!

    Special Deals Offers
We're introducing a number of special deals to increase excitement, drive buzz, and keep buyers coming back to eBay for more. Here is the line-up:

    • Daily Deal: From November 3 to December 17, a different product will be available each day at a fixed-price and deep discount off MSRP with free shipping. These limited-quantity items will be available daily by 3 p.m. EST.
    • Bid From $1: From November 3 to December 17, shoppers can bid on thousands of the hottest electronics all starting at $1, no minimum final-price reserves and with free shipping.
    • $1 Holiday Doorbuster: From November 24 to December 8, we will offer $1 Doorbuster deals - limited quantities of two different items at a fixed-price of $1 and one surprise luxury item, also at a fixed-price of $1.

    Internet Marketing
A huge percentage of the online shopping population will be seeing eBay ads running across some of the most visited sites including Yahoo, MSN, Facebook, YouTube and many more. We want customers everywhere to know about all the great deals on eBay!

    Radio
We'll be on the airwaves in major cities throughout the US beginning November 17th to spread the word!

Get 15% Off Holiday Purchases with the eBay MasterCard
And last but not least - From November 18th through December 31st this year, eBay shoppers can get 15% off their eBay purchases, up to $30 back, when they sign up for the eBay MasterCard. The credit will appear automatically on your statement, so it couldn't be easier.

Information on eBay's holiday deals is featured on: www.ebay.com/deals.

(Reminder! To make sure you don't miss any of the great deals, check your My eBay preferences to make sure you are opted in to receive marketing emails.)

Here's to a happy and successful holiday season!

    Sincerely,

    Greg Fant

***A Message from Matt Ackley -- ProStores 9.2 With Pay-Per-Sale Marketing***

    October 30, 2008 | 04:28PM PST/PT

    Matt Ackley
Hi everyone...this is Matt Ackley, VP of Advertising and Internet Marketing at eBay.

Many of our sellers who run their own Web stores face the challenge of marketing their stores in a cost-effective way. With the release of ProStores 9.2, we can now offer sellers a way to take the hassle out of marketing their stores online with zero upfront cost or risk.

ProStores 9.2 includes Pay-Per-Sale Marketing (Beta), a new feature where ProStores can market your store for you and you pay a commission only on sales linked to the traffic we drive to your store. Just set a minimum commission rate of 8% and increase it for more exposure. This makes it possible to get more potential buyers to your store while controlling your advertising costs—with Pay-Per-Sale Marketing you won’t pay more for advertising than you make in sales.

And remember, ProStores is the online store solution for eBay sellers—with ProStores you can open your own Web store instantly using your eBay listings and other settings.

Learn more about Pay-Per-Sale Marketing and all the new features now available in ProStores 9.2.

***A Message from John Canfield – Two Important Security Updates***

    October 28, 2008 | 11:56AM PST/PT

    John Canfield
Hi everyone…this is John Canfield, Senior Director for Fraud Prevention Policy. I have two important updates on security initiatives to share with you.

Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation -- Progress Update
Trusted selling with identity confirmation, which we first announced in April, is designed to prevent fraudsters from gaining access to members’ accounts in order to commit fraud on eBay. It adds a new level of security by asking anyone listing an item from an “unknown” computer to confirm their identity.

Last spring, we began to implement this project by noting which computers members typically use when they buy and sell on eBay. Then two months ago, we started testing the identity confirmation process for a small population of users. I’m pleased to let you know that our testing has been successful – we’ve seen a significant reduction in account takeovers, and it’s been a smooth experience for users. We are now expanding this initiative to the entire Community, which should be completed within one to two weeks.

Going forward, if you list from a different computer than you usually use (e.g. a computer at a friend’s house, at the library, etc.), eBay will make an automated call to you to confirm it’s really you attempting to list an item. If you are not available to receive a call, you can instead confirm your identity via Live Chat with our customer support team.

    Making Winning Bidder IDs Anonymous
Early last year, we began to anonymize bidder IDs on listings. This change was designed to protect bidders from fake Second Chance Offers and other malicious emails. As I’ve shared before, this initiative has been very successful, resulting in a 90% reduction in this type of fraud.

Today, however, the winning bidder’s ID is currently visible to everyone after the listing ends, and this continues to lead to fake checkout offers and other spam. Consequently, it also leads to unpaid items, as winning bidders who fall victim to these fake emails often send payment to someone other than the seller.

Based on the positive results we’ve seen by anonymizing bidder User IDs, as well as our commitment to protecting all bidders from becoming targets for fraudsters, we’ve decided to extend anonymized User IDs to winning bidders, as well. This change will be implemented sometime this week.

As always, the following information will still be accessible:

    • Sellers will be able to view all bidder IDs on their listings.
    • All members can click on the bidder ID and view the bidder’s Bid History page, which will detail the categories in which they’ve bid over the past 30 days.
    • Feedback pages will show the same information as now – buyer and seller IDs, with comments visible to all.

Thanks for taking the time to read about these updates to improve safety on eBay, and we thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

    John Canfield
Senior Director, eBay Trust & Safety

***A Message from Brian Burke: Feedback Revision Launched***

    October 24, 2008 | 01:42PM PST/PT

    Brian Burke

Hi everyone...I'm Brian Burke, Director for Global Feedback Policy. I'm pleased to announce that Feedback Revision is now available to sellers. You can send a limited number of requests to your buyers requesting that they change Feedback left for you.

You can get to the Feedback revision request form in a few ways:

Sellers should only send a Feedback Revision request to the buyer once they have addressed, to the buyer's satisfaction, the cause for the negative or neutral Feedback. They may also send a request if the buyer accidently left incorrect Feedback in the first place.

Onsite buyer messaging about "Free Shipping" during the Feedback flow
Free Shipping is a great way for sellers to improve their Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) and attract more buyers. However, sometimes buyers may not take into account that fact that the seller offered Free Shipping while leaving Feedback on such transactions. To improve the accuracy of DSRs that buyers leave on transactions with Free Shipping, we've introduced onsite messaging that reminds buyers while leaving Feedback that the seller offered Free Shipping. This change should help improve the accuracy of Detailed Seller Ratings.

    Sincerely,

    Brian Burke
    Director, Global Feedback Policy

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: Paperless Payments and Seller Standards***

    October 21, 2008 | 11:01AM PST/PT

    Dinesh Lathi

Hello everyone...I'm back again with some important updates and reminders.

    Paperless Payments Required
eBay's new Paperless Payments policy will roll-out this week. That means sellers will no longer be able to list an item without one of the approved electronic payment methods: PayPal, credit or debit card payment to a seller's merchant account, or ProPay. You can also offer Pay on Pickup in addition to these payment methods. If you don’t already, you should add at least one of the approved electronic payment methods to your listings immediately so they aren't blocked when you relist. Once the new policy rolls-out, prohibited payment methods will no longer be displayed in the Payment Details section of the item page.

    • Listing with ProPay
When the new Paperless Payments policy rolls-out, you’ll be able to sign-up for a ProPay account and link it to your eBay account, so you can begin offering this payment option to your buyers. For more information, go to www.ProPay.com.
    • More time to update listing descriptions
You also need to remove references to checks and money orders from your item descriptions. We know that this is a busy time of year for sellers so we’ll wait until January 15, 2009, before we begin insisting on the removal of prohibited payment methods from item descriptions.
    • Listing fee credits for restricted listings
We will credit insertion and feature fees to sellers who are forced to cancel and relist "restricted" Good 'Til Canceled listings in order to remove references to checks and money orders from the item descriptions. We will credit insertion and feature fees for all multiple-item Good 'Til Canceled listings that meet the following criteria as of October 20, 2008:

-- Listed on eBay.com in categories covered by the Paperless Payments policy
-- Have at least one sold item
-- Offer check or money order as a payment option.

Get more details and see Frequently Asked Questions on Paperless Payments.

Seller Standards: new policy requires minimum DSRs to list on eBay
I also want to remind you that the new Seller Standards policy is going into effect on November 3. We will begin enforcement of this policy as follows: Sellers with one or more Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) below 4.1 will be restricted from listing. Sellers with a DSR between 4.1 and 4.3 will be allowed to list, but their listings may be subject to further demotion in search results. See best practices for improving your DSRs.

These policies will go a long way to help all eBay members buy and sell with confidence, and we thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,

    Dinesh Lathi
    Vice President, Seller Experience

***Changes to Quantity Displayed on Multi-Quantity Listings***

    October 17, 2008 | 05:24PM PST/PT

    Subha Shetty
Hi everyone... this is Subha Shetty from the Buyer Experience team.

For multi-quantity listings, both research and the input we've received from sellers indicate that buyers tend to purchase less often when they see a large quantity of items available. This is most likely because they feel a lack of urgency to purchase, or they perceive that the item isn’t selling well.

For this reason, we're changing the quantity displayed on multi-quantity listings that have more than 10 items for sale. Instead of displaying the actual quantity, such as "83 available," we're now displaying "more than 10 available."

    Sincerely,

    Subha Shetty

    Dinesh Lathi
Hello again...A number of sellers have reached out in the last few days with questions about some of our current listing promotions. Here's a quick summary to help clear things up:

    Free shipping:

          • PowerSellers get double Final Value fee discounts on all Fixed Price and Auction-style items with free shipping sold from October 1 – December 31, 2008.
          • All sellers get a free Subtitle upgrade on Auction-style and Fixed Price items with free shipping listed from October 1 – December 31, 2008.

Books, Music, Movies & DVDs and Video Games:

    • All sellers get 5 cent Insertion Fees for Fixed Price listings in these categories when they list with pre-filled item information between September 16 – December 31, 2008. (This does not include Video Game Systems).
    • All sellers get a free Subtitle upgrade for Fixed Price and Auction-style listings when they list with pre-filled item information between October 13 – December 31, 2008, whether or not they offer free shipping.

I hope this helps clarify the great promotions we're offering our sellers, and thanks again for your support!

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: New Look for Product Pages, Plus Other Important Updates***

    October 15, 2008 | 04:05PM PST/PT

    Dinesh Lathi
Hello everyone...This is Dinesh Lathi, VP of Selling Experience. As we head into the busy holiday shopping season, I’d like to let you know about a few important changes we’ve made to help sellers be successful this season:

New Look for eBay’s Product Pages
In the next few days, we’re making some important design updates to eBay’s product pages (i.e. the pages you see when you click on "Matching Products" in search results.) You’ll see two different versions of this page—one style is for Books, Music, Movies & DVDs, and Video Games and one is for products in other categories. Sellers’ items will appear on these pages when they list with pre-filled item information.

Both new pages make it faster and easier for buyers to find just what they’re looking for from sellers they trust. Get a closer look at the new pages, along with tips for getting the best position for your listings.

Special Offer Starts: FREE Subtitle for Media Listings
From now through the end of the year you’ll get a FREE Subtitle upgrade when you list books, music, movies, DVDs and video games with pre-filled item information. Subtitles show up on the new product pages, so take advantage of this offer to help your listings stand out.

Introducing Featured First, a New Listing Upgrade
We’re also introducing a new listing upgrade called Featured First. Add Featured First to your listings for an opportunity to appear in the featured area at the top of the first page of search results. A limited number of Featured First listings are randomly selected to be rotated into the featured area, so there’s no guarantee yours will appear. But this upgrade is still a great way to significantly boost your chances of being displayed on the first page for increased visibility and increased likelihood of a sale. It’s also a great way to jump start "recent sales" for a new Fixed Price listing.

Featured First takes the place of Gallery Featured and is offered for the same price: $24.95 for up to 10 days, and $74.95 for up to 30 days. This upgrade is available only to sellers who have not been demoted in Best Match search results (see your seller dashboard for your status). Also note Featured First is not available for any Motors categories. Gallery Featured is still available for Motors sellers.

Relist Credits Ending for Fixed Price Listings October 22
As you know, we recently reduced Insertion Fees for Fixed Price listings to just 35 cents for a full 30 days, and just 15 cents in Books, Music, Movies & DVDs, and Video Games. As a result, starting October 22 we will no longer be offering Insertion Fees credits when Fixed Price items are relisted. Credits will still be issued for unpaid items and are now being extended to single quantity Store Inventory Format listings if there is an unpaid item. Note that relist credits for Auction-style listings will continue.

Best Match for Store Inventory Format Listings in Search Expansion Box
As you know, when search results surface a limited number of items, the search results page expands to show matching Store Inventory Format listings available from eBay Stores sellers. Best Match is now used as the sort order for these Store items, using the same factors that apply for Fixed Price listings. These include recent sales, competitive pricing—including shipping—and seller track record. Also, you may have noticed that we’ve increased the threshold for when Stores items appear from 30 listings or fewer to about 50 to show even more of your Store Inventory listings.

These changes create a more consistent experience and ensure that buyers find the most relevant inventory from sellers they trust. See details on how Best Match works, and how to make it work for you.

Thanks for taking the time to read about these updates, and we thank you for your support.

    Sincerely,
    Dinesh Lathi
    Vice President, Seller Experience

***Updated Dispute Console: The Resolution Center***

    October 14, 2008 | 03:08PM PST/PT

    Ted Fong
Hi everyone...I’m Ted Fong with eBay’s Buyer Experience team. My team has been working to make the Dispute Console much more user-friendly for both buyers and sellers. In the next few days, we’ll introduce a revamped version, which will be renamed the Resolution Center.

The Resolution Center’s important improvements include:

          • A new Case Table, which will give you a summary view of your Open and Closed cases.
          • The ability to search through your cases by User ID or item number.
          • A new option to filter by Case types and statuses.
          • The ability for sellers to either open an Unpaid Item case, or to select Cancel Transaction (previously known as "mutual agreement not to complete transaction"). Although the steps for a seller to send a cancellation request to the buyer will be largely the same as before, we’ve updated the content to avoid any confusion with the Unpaid Item process.

You can access the updated Resolution Center using the same Dispute Console links within My eBay, the Site Map, and the Help system.

    Sincerely,

    Ted Fong

***Upcoming Workshops: Selling with Paperless Payments, Profiting from Customer Complaints, A Guide to Double Entry Bookkeeping and Buying with Paperless Payments***

    October 10, 2008 | 02:30PM PST/PT

    Bev DeSomber
Hi everyone, I'm Bev DeSomber, and I manage the eBay Workshop program. I'd like to invite you to attend the following workshops taking place next week:

    Selling with Paperless Payments
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.

Join this workshop to learn more about what sellers need to do get ready for paperless payments. Starting October 20, sellers will need to offer credit card payments through an internet merchant account, PayPal, or ProPay, all of which will be integrated into checkout in early 2009 (read our paperless payments page for more information). Staff from eBay, PayPal, and ProPay, a 3rd party payment provider, will be on hand to tell you more about the changes and answer your questions.

    Profiting from Customer Complaints
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 14th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time.

In this workshop, Jerad Schempp, COO of Certified Solution Provider Hosted Support will discuss how you can turn those pesky complaints you get from your customers into real profits.

A Guide to Double Entry Bookkeeping
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, October 15th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Please join Phyllis Wischer, eBay Education Specialist and Business Success Coach for SageFire, Inc., Certified Solution Provider and creator of KeepMore.net, for a comprehensive explanation of double entry bookkeeping, how the equation “Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity” works in double entry bookkeeping and reasons why a simpler method (single entry bookkeeping) might work just as well as the more comprehensive double entry bookkeeping for your eBay business.

    Buying with Paperless Payments
This workshop will be held on Thursday, October 16th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time.

You may have heard that beginning October 20th, checks and money orders will no longer be allowed on eBay. Use this workshop to learn the details of the actual policy. Plus, if you have never signed up for an electronic payment method such as a credit card, PayPal, or pre-paid cards, come and see how easy and convenient it is. Members of eBay's Trust and Safety and Marketing team will be on hand to discuss how to seamlessly continue to shop and pay on eBay, and some of the intrinsic benefits of our accepted payment methods.

Workshops are hosted in discussion threads on the Workshop Forum. Remember, if you can't make it during a particular workshop, just visit our Workshop Archives, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Want timely reminders about workshops? We recommend two ways to make sure you never miss an important workshop:

***A Message from Brian Burke: Feedback Revision Launches Soon***

    October 09, 2008 | 04:17PM PST/PT

    Brian Burke
Hello...I'm Brian Burke, Director for Global Feedback Policy. I’m pleased to announce we will introduce Feedback Revision the week of October 20th.

Feedback Revision will enable buyers to change a Feedback rating, comment and Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs). While the Feedback revision process is initiated by a seller, buyers have the option to accept or decline a request. Buyers will have 10 days to respond and non-response will result in the Feedback remaining. Only one request can be made per transaction.

Sellers should only send a Feedback Revision request to the buyer once they have addressed, to the buyer’s satisfaction, the cause for the negative or neutral Feedback. They may also send a request if the buyer accidently left incorrect Feedback in the first place.

Sellers will have a limit of 5 requests per 1000 Feedback earned within a 12 month period. On average, sellers receive 8 negative Feedbacks per 1000 Feedback earned, so the 5 per 1000 limit will enable sellers to address the occasional mistake, while at the same time not enable sellers with greater than average negative Feedback to "cleanse their record."

We will monitor system use and make adjustments as required.

Onsite Buyer Messaging about “Free Shipping” During the Feedback flow
Free Shipping is a great way for sellers to improve their DSRs and attract more buyers. To enhance the accuracy of Feedback left on these transactions, beginning next week buyers will be reminded that the seller offered Free Shipping on the transaction as they are leaving Feedback for the seller.

I’d also like to let you know that in July we introduced messaging to remind buyers when their transaction was an international transaction.

Since Feedback is often left days or even weeks after payment is made, providing these reminders should increase the accuracy of buyer Feedback and help ensure sellers who do cross-border business or who offer Free Shipping receive appropriate DSRs for Shipping time and Shipping & Handling cost.

    Sincerely,

    Brian Burke
    Director, Global Feedback Policy

***A Message from Nate Etter: Update on Mandatory Return Policy and Handling Time***

    October 07, 2008 | 01:40PM PST/PT

    Nathan Etter
Hi everyone...Good news for sellers who are in the process of updating their listings to prepare for the holiday season. We had previously announced that specifying both your Return Policy and Handling Time would be made mandatory in late October. However, given the breadth of changes we’re asking sellers to make to their listings this year, we’re giving sellers a reprieve on these two items until after the holiday season.

The new enforcement date for mandatory Return Policy and Handling Time will be in early 2009. To give sellers adequate time to get their listings ready, we’ll be giving sellers at least 30 days notice before we start enforcement.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to clear up a couple of questions around Return Policy.

Do I have to accept returns?
We encourage you to accept returns, as this increases buyer satisfaction. However, you do not have to accept returns. You may specify “No Returns Accepted” as your return policy.

If I specified Returns Accepted before the new fields were added, do I need to revise my listings again?
No, if you specified Returns Accepted before the new fields were added, you do not need to revise your listings again. The new field, which specifies who pays return shipping, will be defaulted to Buyer.

Even though we’re pushing out the enforcement date, it’s never too early to add Return Policy and Handling Time to your listings. We encourage you to start listing your items with Return Policy and Handling Time now.

    Sincerely,

    Nate Etter

    Kristina Klausen
Hi...This is Kristina Klausen with a reminder that maximum shipping charges will roll out this week in Books, DVDs and Movies, Music and Video Games. Sellers are encouraged to revise any listings that are not yet within the shipping caps so those listings don’t get blocked during the listing flow.

    ***Updated: More eBay Pulse Updates***

    September 24, 2008 | 04:12PM PST/PT

    Dennis Goedegebuure
Hi everyone. I'm back with another update on the eBay Pulse. We've received a lot of feedback on the new Pulse, and what we're seeing is that while members like the new features, they also want the ability to see the "hot" keywords in more subcategories like the old version provided. So we're going to combine the best parts of each, and will re-launch it early next year.

While we're working on this, we're going to make both versions available so that members can use whichever they prefer. You can find the old version again at pulse.ebay.com, and the new one at new-pulse.ebay.com.

    Sincerely,

    Dennis Goedegebuure

***Original: Updates to the eBay Pulse***

    Dennis Goedegebuure
Hi everyone. I'm Dennis Goedegebuure with eBay's Marketing team. We've updated the eBay Pulse, which you can use to find out what's hot on eBay.

    Highlights include:

          • A fresh new look and feel that will make it easier to navigate.
          • New modules that display the most popular searches in each of our main categories, as well as the biggest movers.
          • A new section called the "Internet Pulse," which will display popular keywords from well-read blogs. Check it out to see what's being talked about around the internet.

    Visit the Pulse at http://pulse.ebay.com.

***A Message from Kristina Klausen: Update on Shipping Limits for Magazines***

    September 24, 2008 | 03:38PM PST/PT

    Kristina Klausen
Hi everyone...As we previously announced, starting on October 5th sellers who list in the Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games categories will need to ensure that their first domestic shipping option is within the new maximum shipping charges. Learn more about the maximum shipping charges by visiting our Maximum Shipping and Handling table.

    Update for Magazines
In response to USPS changes to their Bound Printed Matter (BPM) service, we are increasing the maximum shipping charge allowed for magazines from the previously announced $4 dollars to $5 dollars.

As a reminder, maximum shipping charge limits will be enforced for the first flat-rate shipping option to the U.S.. If an item's actual shipping cost is higher than the allowed maximum charge, we recommend that sellers include the extra shipping cost in the item price. Alternatively, if you're listing a non-standard, larger item that can't be shipped within the maximum limits, you may use the shipping calculator.

    Sincerely,

    Kristina Klausen
    Senior Director, Shipping

***Coming Soon: eBay AdCommerce – A Text Advertising Solution for Sellers***

    September 24, 2008 | 10:26AM PST/PT

    Caroline Malifaud
Hi everyone...I'm Caroline Malifaud with eBay's Advertising team. Over the next few months, we'll be introducing a new program called eBay AdCommerce. eBay AdCommerce is a pay-per-click advertising solution that will allow eBay sellers to advertise their listings and eBay Stores via a text ad on eBay search result pages.

AdCommerce is one more powerful advertising option for eBay sellers who want to drive more traffic to their listings and eBay Stores. Your ads are shown near the bottom of search results pages to targeted buyers that are interested in your product line.

    How eBay AdCommerce will work
For example, let's say you want your ad to appear when buyers search for "computer." You would need to decide how much you're willing to pay each time a buyer would click your ad after running a search for "computer."

If you're one of the highest bidders for that keyword, your ad - which can include a title, a short description, and an optional image - will appear. You can also create a campaign for that keyword, and set your budget for that campaign.

Your eBay AdCommerce ads will show up near the bottom of the page when a buyer searches for a particular keyword or is browsing in a particular category. Depending on the keyword and the buyer's purchasing history we will either display eBay AdCommerce, Shopping.com or Yahoo! Ads.

With AdCommerce, there is no up-front fee, and no minimum payment or deposit. Sellers pay only when a buyer clicks your ad and goes to your listing or eBay Store.

    Our launch plan
In the next few weeks, we'll start testing AdCommerce placements with a small group of beta testers, so you may start seeing these types of ads while you're searching. We expect our testing to be complete within the next two months and to be ready to open up the program to all eBay sellers afterwards. We'll be back with more information once we get closer to that launch date.

To learn more, please read our eBay AdCommerce information page.

    Sincerely,

    Caroline Malifaud
    Advertising team

***SYI Form: More Options to Make Listing Easier***

    September 24, 2008 | 09:41AM PST/PT

    Guenter Wiesinger
Hi everyone...this is Guenter Wiesinger from the Seller Experience team. As part of our efforts to make the listing process on eBay easier (see my earlier announcement), we're introducing a few more changes to the selling flow.

    The changes include:

    • Highlighting available listing options. After signing in to your Selling account from the Sell hub - the page you see when you click on "Sell" at the top of most eBay pages - you'll see a variety of choices that help you easily:
      • Start a new listing
      • Continue a draft listing you're returning to
      • Choose an existing Sell Your Item (SYI) template
      • Use a Selling Manager Pro template (if you are a Selling Manager Pro subscriber)

    • Helping you choose the right listing form for your needs. Depending on your listing requirements, you can choose between the "Keep it simple" and "Customize your listing" forms. (The two options have been available for a long time; we're just making it easier for you to make your choice as you progress along the listing process.) You can also conveniently toggle between the two forms.

    • Easier category and product catalog selections. As mentioned in my earlier announcement, we're organizing category and product catalog selections more efficiently. You will be able to use these for both the "Keep it simple" and "Customize your listing" forms.

      Sincerely,

      Guenter Wiesinger
      Seller Experience Team

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: New Pricing for Fixed Price Listings Takes Effect at Midnight, Plus Other Reminders***

    September 15, 2008 | 03:20PM PST/PT

    Dinesh Lathi
Hi everyone. I'm here with a reminder that the new pricing structure for Fixed Price listings, as announced by Lorrie on August 20th, goes into effect at midnight Pacific time tonight. That means that sellers will be able to start taking advantage of the new 30-day duration for Fixed Price listings for the new low Insertion Fee of 35 cents, and just 15 cents in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games.

Also starting at midnight, and good through the end of the year, our special holiday promotion goes into effect for Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games: Fixed Price Insertion Fees are just 5 cents when you use Pre-filled Item Information (see details here).

If you haven't already, make sure you've reviewed all of the information pages we've provided to learn more about the other changes she introduced: "recent sales" as a factor in Best Match search results for Fixed Price listings (which may take a few days to roll out across the entire site), new maximum shipping and handling charges in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games, our paperless payments policy, our seller standards, and more.

In addition, check out the Seller Checklist, which will help you stay on top of when various policies and features will take effect, and provide updates on the availability of tools for bulk-editing your listings. A few key upcoming dates:

    • Starting October 1st and through the end of the year, sellers will get a free Subtitle listing upgrade, and eligible PowerSellers will get double their Final Value Fee discounts for items sold with free shipping.
    • By October 5th, make sure your first domestic shipping option in your Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games listings is within the new maximum charges.
    • On October 20th, our paperless payments policy will begin, and checks and money orders will no longer be allowed as payment methods.
    • Also by late October, you'll need to specify your handling time and return policy in your listings.

As we did on August 20th, we'll be answering your questions about these changes on our special discussion forum on September 16th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.

    Sincerely,

    Dinesh Lathi

    September 12, 2008 | 01:20PM PST/PT

    Bev DeSomber
Hi everyone, I'm Bev DeSomber, and I manage the eBay Workshop program. I'd like to invite you to attend the following workshops taking place next week:

eBay Marketplace Research Changes - What's Happening to My Account?
This workshop will be held on Monday, September 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.

The way you receive marketplace research is changing. eBay has retired its own research tool, and when you next access your account, you'll notice a new option: Terapeak. Migrating your eBay Marketplace Research account to Terapeak is simple. You’ll continue to maintain your current fee structure, and have access to improved research tools. This workshop will review how to migrate your account, and provide more information about Terapeak, including where to go for assistance and learning materials.

7 HOT Holiday Product Trends for 2008
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, September 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.

The “It” products! Every holiday season has them! What products will buyers be snapping up this year? Please join Lisa Suttora, veteran trend spotter and Founder/CEO of eBay Certified Provider WhatDoISell.com as she unveils this year’s hot holiday trends. Find out what products will be on people’s wish lists this year!

How to Treat your eBay Business as a 'Business'
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 17th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Please join Phyllis Wischer, eBay Education Specialist and Business Success Coach for SageFire, Inc., Certified Solution Provider and creator of KeepMore.net, as she explains the importance of treating your eBay sales activity as a business and what it might cost you if you don’t. Using portions of KeepMore.net’s most popular workshop, “Accounting Do's & Don'ts for the eBay User “ and factual information from a recent IRS audit, you will better understand why it’s important to “treat your eBay business like a business” and what it may cost you if you don’t!

    • Sign up for the Workshop Information Group! By joining this group, you will receive an email notification reminding you about upcoming eBay Workshops. (To sign up for the Workshops Information Group, please click here.)

***Original: Coming Soon - Category Changes***

    August 26, 2008 | 03:02PM PST/PT

The category structure will be updated in early September based on feedback received from the eBay Community and from experts in the affected fields.

The September update contains some significant changes for Collectibles and Jewelry & Watches, as well as additions to Sporting Goods and Toys & Hobbies. If you sell in these areas, please be sure to take a look at the new category structure on Seller Central here.

The following categories will be updated:

    ANTIQUES
    We're building a brand-new section for pre-1930 Bed & Bath Linens.

    COLLECTIBLES
Look for category additions in almost every section, including a reconstruction of Vintage Bed & Bath Linens and new section for Souvenirs & Travel Memorabilia.

    JEWELRY & WATCHES
Last month we created a new Fine Jewelry section for items made of solid precious metals and naturally mined stones. This month, a new Fashion Jewelry umbrella category is being added and existing (non-Vintage) Bracelets, Charms, Earrings, Hair Jewelry, Jewelry Sets, Necklaces & Pendants, and Rings categories will move under it. If you sell in this area, we encourage you to view the category changes on Seller Central here.

For an overview of the August and September jewelry changes, please visit this page: http://pages.ebay.com/categorychanges/Jewelry-2008.html.

In Vintage & Antique Costume Jewelry, we'll be making changes to the Retro, Vintage 1930s-1980s structure so that sellers will be able to classify by jewelry type. Many items will be moved into "Other" categories during this transition, so we do encourage sellers who list in this area to evaluate the upcoming changes and move their listings into the new categories as soon as they become available.

    SPECIALTY SERVICES
We're adding a Photography category under Artistic Services. In the Printing & Personalization section, we're consolidating Address Labels into two categories: Graphical and Plain.

    SPORTING GOODS
We're adding a category for Indoor Roller Skating. In Fishing, look for Freshwater Swimbait, Fishing Tackle Craft, and Vintage Advertisements. There will be lots of changes in Paintball, an expanded Skateboarding & Longboarding section, a new Gaelic Sports category and updates in Ice & Roller Hockey.

    TOYS & HOBBIES
We're adding a few categories in Action Figures, Beanie Babies, Stuffed Animals, and NASCAR Diecast. Look for new Star Wars games and a spot for Plastic Action Games. We'll make addtions to every scale in Model RR, Trains. Vintage & Antique Toys gets a spot for Card Games.

We appreciate your input on how we can make categories better for everyone. Please submit categories suggestions here.

Thanks again to all our members who contributed to these changes!

***Upcoming Workshops: The Biggest Tax You'll Face When You Sell on eBay and What will YOU sell for the Holidays?***

    September 05, 2008 | 03:03PM PST/PT

    Bev DeSomber
Hi everyone, I'm Bev DeSomber, and I manage the eBay Workshop program. I'd like to invite you to attend the following workshops taking place next week:

The Biggest Tax You'll Face When You Sell on eBay
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, September 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.

When do you have to charge sales tax, and for which states? Sales taxes and the use tax continue to be the most confusing taxes for most eBay sellers. Please join best selling-author and CPA Diane Kennedy as she guides you through the ins and outs of the maze of sales tax regulations in this one-hour workshop.

What will YOU sell for the Holidays?
This workshop will be held on Thursday, September 11th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.

If you haven't thought about it yet, it's high time to start. To capitalize on the biggest spending frenzy of the year, the first step is to know what products will be on every buyer's wish list. In this new video, Lisa Suttora from WhatDoISell.com and Colette Marshall from WorldwideBrands.com cover topics such as How to identify Holiday trends and Key trends for the 2008 Holidays. Watch the Video NOW - and come ask questions during the workshop.

Workshops are hosted in discussion threads on the Workshops Board. Remember, if you can't make it during a particular workshop, just visit our Workshop Archives, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Want timely reminders about workshops? We recommend two ways to make sure you never miss an important workshop:

    • Sign up for the Workshops Information Group! By joining this group, you will receive an email notification reminding you about upcoming eBay Workshops. (To sign up for the Workshops Information Group, please click here.)
    • Subscribe to the RSS feed for the Workshop board. When a new workshop becomes active, your RSS reader will be updated. (You can also subscribe to just the specific topic thread that interests you.) To subscribe, click on the button at the bottom of the Workshop board or thread. Copy and paste the feed URL into your reader to subscribe. For more information on RSS, please read our RSS Help page.

We look forward to seeing you there!

    Sincerely,

    Bev DeSomber
