Staff from eBay, PayPal, and ProPay, a 3rd party payment provider, will be on hand to tell you more about the changes and answer your questions.

***New Look for 'Matching Products' Module in Search***

August 25, 2008 | 12:36PM PST/PT

Matt Olson

Hi everyone...this is Matt Olson from the Finding team. In the next few days we're going to make a couple of improvements to the "Matching Products" module within the new Finding experience.

As a reminder, this is what the current “Matching products” module looks like:

About the "Matching Products" module
This module appears at the top of search results when a high percentage of matching listings are for a specific product that was listed using Pre-Filled Item Information (so we know exactly what the item is, right down to the version, model, etc.). For example, if you search for "ipod," we'll show the details of various versions of the ipod, complete with links to those listings.

Starting in the next few days, the Matching Products module will look like this:

Besides giving this feature a visual facelift, we've expanded the items that appear here to all products relevant to a buyer's search (instead of just a subset). Just click the "See more matching products" link as indicated in the screenshot below.

Sellers: Make sure that your items are getting visibility in the "Matching Products" module by listing with Pre-filled Item Information whenever possible.

Sincerely,

Matt Olson
Finding Team

***A Message from Lorrie Norrington: New Pricing, More Incentives, and Other Changes to Bring More Buyers***

August 20, 2008 | 07:04AM PST/PT

Lorrie Norrington
Hi everyone. As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, I want to let you know about some bold changes we're making on eBay to lower your up-front costs and help you to sell more efficiently. Combined with the improvements we're rolling out to deliver a more consistent shopping experience this fall, buyers will see more bargains than ever, and keep coming back to eBay to buy from you.

Listing fixed price items is more affordable than ever
We understand you have a lot of choices when it comes to selling online. That's why we're changing our pricing to reduce your up-front cost to sell and align with your success. Starting September 16, we are lowering the listing fee for all items sold via the fixed price format to only 35 cents, and a special rate of only 5 cents through the end of the year for Buy It Now™ fixed price listings in the Media categories (Books, Video Games, Music and DVDs/Movies) using pre-filled item information. (See our new Fixed Price fee structure here.)

Accordingly, we are shifting the majority of our costs for most categories to the back end (final value fees), which you only pay if you're successful in selling an item. In extremely competitive e-commerce categories such as Consumer Electronics, Cameras and Computers, we're decreasing final value fees. This means we're giving you an even bigger incentive to list these types of items on eBay.

In addition to the pricing change, we're extending the listing duration of all Buy It Now™ fixed price listings to 30 days, up from seven with an option for automatic renewal. For sellers whose items that may take longer to sell, this change will be a huge cost reduction and time saver. Taken together, these two big changes – 35 cents for up to 30 days - represent a 70 percent reduction in listing fees on fixed price items.

As for Auction-style listings, we've decided not to make any changes. We believe this format is already a good deal, especially when you list with a low start price. Auctions will always have a place on eBay – they are a proven way for sellers to get the best value for their unique items, and they continue to receive significant exposure in search as they are sorted primarily based on time ending soonest.

So that's the big news: 35 cents for 30 days. We're virtually eliminating the up-front cost to list an item at fixed price on eBay. And this is not a promotion - we are serious about making eBay the most competitive marketplace online.

The changes we're making in pricing also mean great things for buyers. As more merchandise comes onto the site, we're applying our search technology in a way that will make their shopping easier, faster and safer. Essentially, buyers will see the most relevant, best priced inventory from our most trusted sellers – all of which allows them to buy with confidence. And when buyers find and buy what they want for a good price, you win.

Free shipping incentives in all categories, plus shipping charge limits in Media
Shipping is an important factor for buyers as they shop online – and expectations are higher than ever. Today, buyers want free or reasonable shipping. So, if you're already offering free shipping on items, we're going to reward you even more.

Beginning on October 1, 2008 and running through the end of the year, all sellers will receive the option to use subtitle for free, worth $.50 per listing, when free shipping is offered. And for eligible PowerSellers, you will receive double your PowerSeller Final Value Fee discount on these items, starting on the same date and running through the end of the year when you offer free shipping - this is up to a 40% discount! As always, items with free shipping will get a boost in Best Match search results.

In addition to shipping incentives, we're introducing limits on shipping and handling charges in one of our biggest and most competitive categories, Media (Books, DVDs & Movies, Music and Video Games).

This means that Media sellers will need to offer at least one shipping option within the specified limit. The dollar limits are fair, especially compared to what e-commerce competitors typically charge for shipping. With this move, we're also ensuring that buyers encounter fewer excessive shipping charges, which is the number one reason they leave the site.

See more detail on reasonable shipping and Free Shipping incentives.

Faster, more reliable checkout on eBay
Starting this fall, we're moving to an electronic checkout process that's faster and more reliable for sellers and buyers. As part of this move, checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay, although buyers can still use these payment methods for item pick-up, at the seller's discretion. In addition, the electronic payment methods will be fully integrated into eBay checkout. For example, if a seller has an internet merchant account, a buyer will be able to directly enter a credit card and never have to leave the site.

Today, items paid with check or money order are 80% more likely to result in an item not received (INR) than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are 50% more likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October, 2008, we are moving to 100% electronic payments - credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal.

This means that sellers will be able to offer credit card payments through their own merchant accounts, and payments through ProPay and/or PayPal, with all payment methods integrated into the checkout process on eBay. Seller will also get paid faster and be able to ship items quicker. And remember, for those buyers and sellers who use PayPal, we're backing every eligible transaction with our buyer and seller protections. (See more information on paperless payments and more on terms for the PayPal Buyer and Seller Protection plans.)

Updated seller standards – minimum DSRs
Finally, we're instituting a new minimum Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) requirement, as a way to further improve the customer experience for everyone on eBay. As of November 1, 2008, sellers will need at least a 4.3 across all four DSR categories, over the prior 30 day or 12 month period depending on volume, in order to list on the site.

Today, only a small fraction of sellers fall below this threshold, yet they are responsible for a high percentage of customer complaints, which hurts you and our marketplace overall. We're urging all sellers whose scores fall below the 4.3 threshold to use the next two months to adjust their business models and/or work on improving their DSR scores.

Learn more
To learn more about all of these changes, please see our overview pages.

I know that this is a lot to absorb at once. To help you understand how these changes affect you, and how they can help your business, we're offering a series of Webinars over the next few days, as well as a Town Hall meeting on Friday.

Below is our Webinar schedule:

  • Wednesday, August 20 at 2:00 pm PT
  • Wednesday, August 20 at 4:30 pm PT

***Consumer Product Safety Commission - Children's Items Recalled This Week***

***Starting this Week – Item Page Testing***

August 13, 2008 | 12:55PM PST/PT

Subha Shetty
Hi everyone...At eBay Live! (read my earlier announcement), we had the opportunity to collect a lot of valuable input on our redesigned item page from attendees. As a result, we’ve made two significant changes to what we presented in June:

        • The redesigned item page Description section will be flex width, not fixed. We heard from 3rd-party developers and sellers that our original plan to require a fixed width for the description area of the item page would cause too much disruption to listing templates. We’ve modified our design, so now the top section will be fixed width, but the lower Description section will fluctuate in width (as it does today) to accommodate the various types of listing templates our sellers use.
        • Preview your item in the new item page. Sellers need to be able to see how their items will appear in the new page being tested, so they can make adjustments as necessary. As a seller, if you have an item listed, simply sign in and click the new preview link at the top of your listing to view the item as it would appear in the new design.

Testing plans
We’re starting another 2-month testing cycle. Starting this week, a very small percentage of members will be randomly selected to see one of several new page variants that we’re testing. This means not everyone in our test will see the same designs or features.

Remember this is only a test! If you are randomly selected to try the new item page temporarily, we appreciate your support and patience. We’ll be back with more information on our results and future plans in a few weeks.

I’d also like to let you know about a new feature we’re testing:

  • New merchandising module with seller opt-out. As part of the new test cycle, some of the variants will include a merchandising "module." The placement of this module will vary; some variants include merchandising along the right side of the page, while other variants display this module across the bottom. In keeping with trends and shopping expectations on the internet, these designs offer buyers more selection, while offering our sellers more exposure. Items merchandised will include relevant listings from the same seller or other sellers.

Sellers who do not wish to have other sellers' items appear on their item page can opt-out via preferences in My eBay. Keep in mind that by opting out, your items will no longer appear on other seller’s pages, limiting exposure to buyers.

To learn more about the redesigned item page, please read our Frequently Asked Questions. My team and I will also be answering questions in this Auction Listings forum discussion. And please stay tuned for more information about the redesigned item page on our General Announcements board.

Sincerely,

Subha Shetty

***A Message from Rob Chesney – eBay Motors Vehicles Fee Changes***

August 13, 2008 | 12:25PM PST/PT

Rob Chesney

Hello everyone...This is Rob Chesney, Vice President of eBay Motors. I’d like to share some news regarding seller fee changes that we’re making to the eBay Motors Vehicles marketplace.

Effective September 2, 2008, we’re lowering the Insertion Fees for all vehicle Auction-style and Fixed Price listings and will be increasing the Successful Listing Fee. Here are the details:

        • Starting on September 2, 2008, all members will qualify for FREE insertion fees on their first four vehicle listings – a significant discount compared to the current $40 Insertion Fee.
        • The Successful Listing Fee for the first four vehicles will be $125, but this is only charged when a listing ends successfully with a winning bidder.
        • Sellers who list more than four vehicles in a 12-month period will be charged a $20 insertion fee and a $100 Successful Listing Fee when a listing ends successfully with a winning bidder.

These fee changes apply to listings in the Cars & Trucks, Boats, and all Other Vehicles categories. Vehicles listed in the Motorcycles and Powersports categories follow the same structure, but with slightly lower fees.

We’re excited to make these changes, and believe they will enhance the vehicles marketplace on eBay Motors for everyone. The new structure reduces the upfront cost to list vehicles, and benefits both private sellers and vehicle dealers. I encourage you to click here for full pricing details.

Sincerely,

Rob Chesney
Vice President, eBay Motors

***Free Text Message Alerts Through November 4th***

August 12, 2008 | 03:00PM PST/PT

Shikha Khanna

Hi everyone…I'm Shikha Khanna with the eBay Mobile team. For the past few years, buyers have been able to use their cell phones to stay on top of items they're interested in, even when they are away from their computers. By simply signing up right on the item page for eBay Alerts, you can get a text message (also known as an SMS message) if you've been outbid, or when the item is about to end. You can even reply to the message to re-bid if you'd like.

A few days ago we started waiving the 25 cent fee to receive these alerts for the next three months! It’s a great time to take advantage of this convenience, especially if you've never tried phone alerts before. (Please note: your cell phone carrier may still apply fees to receive text messages – check with your carrier for details on your individual plan.)

For more information about this sale, and to learn more about eBay Alerts, please visit our information page.

Sincerely,

Shikha Khanna

***SYI Form: Category and Catalog Search Made Easier***

August 12, 2008 | 01:37PM PST/PT

Guenter Wiesinger

Hi everyone… this is Guenter Wiesinger from the Seller Experience team. We're making a few minor look-and-feel changes to the Sell Your Item (SYI) form, to help make the listing process a bit easier:

Making it easier to find a suitable category for your item
Previously, while trying to pick a suitable category for listing your item, you would see a list of options with the top-level categories often repeated in the list. Starting this week, we're organizing category choices under top-level categories, so you can select the right one(s) for your item.

Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.

Now, grouping choices under top-level categories (right)
makes category selection easier than before (left).

Cleaner layout for product search results
Previously, when you entered your item keywords to match with eBay's catalog, you would see a long list of choices organized in alphabetical order. You would sometimes have to scroll down a long way down the page to find your item.

In a few weeks, in some categories we will organize the display of catalog items in order of popularity on eBay, so that the majority of sellers will find it easier to match their items quickly. We'll also display catalog choices in two columns, to reduce scrolling down the page.

Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.

Before (left): Catalog choices shown alphabetically. After (right): Choices
shown by popularity on eBay and in two columns to reduce scrolling.

We'll also be making a few more similar changes to the layout of SYI in the upcoming weeks. I'll be back soon to update you.

Sincerely,

Guenter Wiesinger
Seller Experience Team

***Updated: Category Changes are now Live (Attention: Jewelry and Electronics Sellers)***

August 12, 2008 | 11:18AM PST/PT

The following category changes, first announced below on July 28th are now live. We request sellers in Jewelry and Electronics categories to especially pay attention to these changes.
Link to this announcement | Back to top
***Original: Coming Soon -- Category Changes***

July 28, 2008 | 02:02PM PST/PT

The category structure will be updated in mid-August based on input received from the eBay Community and from experts in the relevant fields.

The August update contains some significant changes for Jewelry & Watches and Electronics, as well as many additions to Antiques, Entertainment Memorabilia, and Clothing, Shoes & Accessories. If you sell in these areas, please be sure to take a look at the new category structure on Seller Central here. In many cases, coordinating Item Specifics updates will also be made.

Updated Categories:

ANTIQUES
We're expanding Antiques in almost every area. Highlights include a new Home & Hearth section for items like antique stoves, bathtubs and baby carriages, and another new section called Mercantile, Trades & Factories for such business-related antiques as typewriters, barber chairs and cash registers. Finally, a new Restoration & Care section for items to help extend the life of your antiques.

CLOTHING, SHOES & ACCESSORIES
We’re creating a separation between Costumes & Reenactment Attire and adding new categories under each. Look for many new categories in Infants & Toddlers as well as Boys and Girls clothing. We've renamed the Wedding Apparel section to Wedding Apparel & Accessories and have added more subsections here for that special day. Also look for lots of additions in Women's Accessories, Women's Clothing, Unisex Clothing, and a new expanded section for Children's Vintage Clothing.

COLLECTIBLES
In Native Americana, we're changing the category date breakdown to conform with the Indian Arts & Crafts Act. Also look for this year's summer blockbusters in Pins, Buttons and Trading Cards.

CRAFTS
We're adding a new section for Mosaic/Stained Glass/Glass Art under Art Supplies.

ELECTRONICS (formerly Consumer Electronics)
Many categories are being removed to eliminate redundancy between categories and Item Specifics. If you sell in this area, please look over the changes by following the link above and take advantage of Item Specifics on your listings.

We've renamed Consumer Electronics to simply "Electronics" to highlight that this area includes professional as well as consumer equipment. In August, we're adding a Pro Audio & Stage Effects area, including DJ Gear, Lighting Effects, Mixers and Amplifiers.

ENTERTAINMENT MEMORABILIA
Look for category additions in almost every section.

JEWELRY & WATCHES
As we begin Phase 1 of a two-phase project in Jewelry, we have created a new section for Fine Jewelry. This section was designed to spotlight non-vintage, non-bridal jewelry composed entirely of genuine gemstones and solid, unplated precious metals. If you are a seller of such items, we encourage you to list your jewelry in this new section and to adopt eBay Item Specifics to optimize visibility. For more details on this project, both Phase 1 and Phase 2, see our information page.

In Vintage & Antique Jewelry, we'll be making changes to the structure so that buyers will be able to choose their era of interest before they pick the material of the piece. We're also adding a third level, classifying jewelry type. Many items will be moved into "Other" categories during this transition, so we do encourage sellers who list in this area to evaluate the upcoming changes and move their listings into the new categories as soon as they become available.

We've also created a separate section for Engagement/Wedding/Anniversary Jewelry to highlight these popular items. Here too, we recommend adopting eBay Item Specifics to so that more buyers can find your listing.

Finally, look for increased alignment with the UK eBay site to enable more cross-border trade.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
The Clarinet and Saxophone categories will get separate sections for Vintage instruments and Accessories. Also, we've moved the Pro Audio section out of Musical Instruments and into Electronics.

SPORTING GOODS
In the Water Sports section, look for increased visibility of Wetsuits & Drysuits and Fins, Footwear & Gloves.

TOYS & HOBBIES
In the Slot Cars section, we’ve flipped the structure so buyers can browse by scale first, then era.

TRAVEL
Look for brand-new sections for Campground & RV Parks, Maps and Travel Accessories. We're also removing categories in Lodging that duplicate Item Specifics.

We appreciate your input on how we can make categories better for everyone. Please submit categories suggestions here.

Thanks again to all our members who contributed to these changes!

***eBay Motors -- Best Match as Default Sort***

August 07, 2008 | 10:31AM PST/PT

Danny Chang

Hello everyone...I'm Danny Chang from the eBay Motors team. We're pleased to let you know that, in the week of August 18th, Best Match will become the default sort method on eBay Motors.

As a reminder, Best Match has been the default sort option on eBay.com since March, and it has been the default sort even longer in other international markets, such as France and Germany. Best Match helps buyers find relevant items quicker and easier than other sort methods. In fact, since its launch, our data show that Best Match has a better buyer conversion than any of our other sort methods, such as "Time: Ending Soonest."

You can customize your sort order
You can always choose a different sort order (such as "Time: Ending Soonest" or "Distance"). To choose a different sort order, use the "Sort By" drop-down menu at the top of the search results.

For additional details on how Best Match works, please refer to the prior Best Match announcement on eBay.com.

Sincerely,

Danny Chang

***PowerSellers: Nominate Your Favorite Charity for the Powerful Giving Program***

August 01, 2008 | 05:40PM PST/PT

Edurne Jorda

Hi there... I'm Edurne Jorda from the Seller Development Team. I'm here to tell you about a great program for PowerSellers made possible by the eBay Foundation, a charitable fund that serves as the main channel through which eBay contributes to local community organizations.

Some of you may have heard about eBay Foundation's Community Gives campaign in announcements earlier this year asking you to join us in supporting three inspiring causes. But you may not be as familiar with another program eBay Foundation runs called Powerful Giving, which is a special program for PowerSellers. Every year, through the Powerful Giving program, the eBay Foundation donates $5,000 each to charities that are recommended by our PowerSellers.

Last year, PowerSellers pogowray, envirosafetygal, eastgatedistributors, fvmtoolsandmore, foggypaws, wabbit-king, mooseeblack, ntr_bundle, rechan, and smile4u667 all saw the charities they nominated receive grants. This year, the Foundation will choose another 10 charities recommended by PowerSellers! That’s $50,000 in grants the Foundation will make in 2008 to charities that PowerSellers care deeply about. So, submit your favorite charity for consideration because it could be one of the 10 selected this year!

It's really simple to nominate your favorite charity:

  • Fill out the PowerSeller Recommendation form explaining why your charity should get the grant. Please provide your name, contact information, charity contact, and the reasons why you feel your charity should receive the grant.
  • eBay Foundation will then contact the charity and ask them to submit a proposal.
  • eBay Foundation will review the recommendations and proposals and donate $5,000 in grants to the 10 selected charities. Grant decisions will be made by the end of October, 2008.

The deadline for recommendations is August 15th, 2008. Go to the eBay Foundation Powerful Giving Grants page to submit your recommendation, and to see a list of all the Powerful Giving grants that eBay Foundation has made over the past three years. You can also see which PowerSellers recommended each charity. Submit a recommendation and maybe this year, your name could get featured too!

Sincerely,

Edurne Jorda
