Save $ and Time on Shipping: Strategies for Packaging & Shipping
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 4th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Shipping your items is labor-intensive, not to mention costs. It’s time to ask yourself: Am I operating efficiently? Thinking ahead can save you hours every week. Learn from a shipping pro how to “think” shipping, from crafting the listing description, printing the labels and shipping the packages. Learn techniques and tools that save eBay sellers tons of time. Please join Rafael Zimberoff, an active eBay seller and ShipRush product manager for an information-packed hour on how to save time on shipping.

Tax Just released! Using the New Seller Dashboard to Maximize your eBay Benefits
This workshop will be held on Thursday, June 5th from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific time.

eBay sellers who have received at least 10 Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) within the last 12 months now have access to their own, free personalized Seller Dashboard. This valuable resource allows each seller to actively monitor how selling performance translates to status with numerous eBay programs, incentives, and penalties. Sellers can see where they stand with the PowerSeller program, PowerSeller fee discounts, search standing (visibility in Best Match sorting), DSRs, policy compliance, buyer satisfaction rating, and account status (billing). Join this workshop to understand the new Seller Dashboard, and how it can help you maximize your benefits and selling effectiveness on eBay.

Use International Research to Maximize your Sales
This workshop will be held on Friday, June 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time.

eBay's recent addition of an option to include your listings on the UK site for pennies means that you can now advertise your sales to an entire new market! This month, learn to make the most of your listings by using Terapeak's UK research. Understand this new market quickly and easily using Terapeak's market research. ***Updates to eBay Picture Hosting***

May 27, 2008 | 11:06AM PST/PT

Keith Wescourt
Hi everyone....this is Keith Wescourt from eBay's Product Management team. eBay picture hosting, our popular service that many sellers use to upload pictures to their listings, will be updated soon. The changes make uploading pictures easier and more reliable, and improve the quality of your listing images.

Some of the changes you’ll see include:

        • improved resizing and compression for uploaded pictures
        • less interference from security filters, such as pop-blockers
        • the ability to upload pictures from external applications, such as camera phones.

For detailed information on these changes, please read this thread on the eBay Picture Services and Picture Manager Discussion Board.

If you use eBay picture hosting in the Sell Your Item (SYI) form, here’s how you will be affected:

Basic uploader: If you use the default Basic uploader, within the next few weeks you’ll be upgraded to the Standard uploader automatically if you already have the latest version of Adobe Flash installed. Use the Standard uploader to upload multiple pictures at the same time, as well as see detailed progress information during uploads.

Enhanced uploader: If you use the current Enhanced uploader (for Internet Explorer only), you’ll need to download and install an updated version from eBay starting this week. Unless your Internet Explorer settings allow automatic updates of installed ActiveX controls, you will be prompted to download and install the update when you upload your pictures. (You must install the new ActiveX to continue using the Enhanced uploader.)

We'll be posting updates on the eBay Picture Services and Picture Manager Discussion Board, so stay tuned for more details.

Sincerely,

Keith Wescourt
eBay Product Team

***Consumer Product Safety Commission - Children's Items Recalled the Week of May 19th***

May 23, 2008 | 01:58PM PST/PT

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall for the following items:

  • Horse toys due to a lead paint hazard
  • Paint brushes due to a lead paint hazard
  • Tinker Bell wands due to a lead paint hazard
  • Pirates of the Caribbean sleeping bags due to a lead paint hazard
  • Little Rider Toys due to a lead paint hazard
  • Children's blankets due to a strangulation hazard.

eBay takes recalled items very seriously, and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues. We encourage buyers and sellers to visit http://www.cpsc.gov (see the Recent Recalls section) for more details about the products and model numbers included in this recall. You may also wish to visit our Recalled Items policy at http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/recalled.html.

For Sellers: Please check your product model numbers and refrain from listing any items that are part of this recall. Any currently listed items that are included in the recall should be ended.

For Buyers: If you believe an item you are interested in bidding on or purchasing may be part of this recall, we encourage you to use the Ask Seller a Question feature to verify.

As a service to our Community, eBay announces some product recalls, like these, when we believe the marketplace will be impacted. To stay informed about all CPSC recalls, please bookmark www.cpsc.gov and sign up to receive notices on new recalls issued by the CPSC.

***The Seller Dashboard is Here***

May 23, 2008 | 09:58AM PST/PT

Nick Donelson
Hi everyone...this is Nick Donelson from eBay's Seller Tools team. I'm pleased to let you know that the Seller Dashboard is now available for all sellers with at least ten Detailed Seller Ratings. The Dashboard gives you an at-a-glance look at your selling account status so you can track what’s going well in your eBay business and identify areas for improvement.

The Seller Dashboard consists of the following modules:

Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs) – Here you can track your average ratings from buyers for shipping costs, shipping time, communication, and item as described. eBay is using these ratings to set key performance standards and eligibility for seller rewards. This section will enable you to keep track of where you stand and monitor the effectiveness of changes in your selling strategy. You'll see:

  • your rolling 30-day DSR average, as well as your 12-month DSR scores. To maintain buyer anonymity, if you have less than ten sales in a rolling 30-day period, you'll just see your 12-month scores.
  • your DSR scores displayed to the hundredth of a point. For example, you may see 4.83 as opposed to the rounded 4.8 displayed on your Member Profile. This will be available next week.
  • how your DSRs compare with an average seller on the site.

Search standing – See whether your listings are eligible to be raised in the Best Match sort order based on your DSRs and overall buyer satisfaction rating, or whether they’re at risk of being lowered.

PowerSeller status – See a summary of your PowerSeller status, and what you need to reach the next level. If you're not a PowerSeller, you'll see how close you are to qualifying for the program.

PowerSeller discounts – PowerSellers can see the discount received on their last invoice, and monitor progress towards their next discount. This module has been available to PowerSellers since March.

Account status – Here you can easily find billing information related to your account, including your balance and payment status.

Policy compliance – You'll see alerts about policy violations, as well as existing, pending or potential eBay sanctions—and in some cases, what you need to do to remedy the situation. We've also included links to the specific My Messages that include more information about any violations you may have. Note - information about some policy violations won't be included here initially, but will be added over the next few weeks.

Buyer satisfaction – Your buyer satisfaction rating is a composite measure of the experience you're providing for your buyers. It's based on your DSR scores, negative and neutral feedback received, and Buyer Protection claims filed by your buyers. The rating system is based on four levels and the vast majority of sellers will be at the "Good" level. If you have a low buyer satisfaction rating, you'll see suggestions on how to remedy the situation.

You can find links to the Seller Dashboard within the My Account section of My eBay, and on the Summary Page of our Selling Manager products. (If you've customized the display of your Selling Manager Summary page, you'll simply need to add the Dashboard to see it). If you have at least 10 DSRs in the last 12 months, you can check out your Seller Dashboard at www.ebay.com/sellerdashboard.

My team is also hosting an online workshop on June 5th, so make sure to stop by, and bring your questions!

Sincerely,

Nick Donelson

***Offer Free Shipping and Get 15% off your Final Value Fees from May 23-June 1***

May 22, 2008 | 05:06PM PST/PT

Kristina Klausen
Hi everyone. Offering free shipping is a great way to make your items stand out from your competition. Buyers love it, and it can help improve your Detailed Seller Ratings scores. If you haven't already tried it, now is a great time to start. From tomorrow, May 23rd through June 1st, you'll get 15% off your Final Value Fees when you offer Free Shipping on eBay.com and for Parts & Accessories listings on eBay Motors!

You can easily offer Free Shipping at the time of listing using either flat rate or calculated shipping. Not only could you get the discount, but items with Free Shipping also receive the eye-catching Free Shipping icon on the item page, and may receive additional exposure in Best Match.

To qualify, sellers must meet some basic criteria. For example, you must have a minimum score of 4.5 across all DSR categories (although new sellers with fewer than 10 DSRs are still eligible), and you can't require insurance on the item. Check out our information page for all the details.

It's a great time to try out Free Shipping, and enjoy the Final Value Fee savings!

Sincerely,

Kristina Klausen
Sr. Director, Shipping

***Feedback Changes – Common Questions Answered***

May 22, 2008 | 04:03PM PST/PT

Brian Burke
Hi everyone. As you've probably seen, we introduced a number of changes to the Feedback system on eBay.com this week. I want to address some of the most common questions we’ve seen come in over the past few days.

Including Neutral Feedback when calculating Positive Feedback percentage
Some sellers have seen their positive Feedback percentage drop since we introduced the changes. Though we mentioned that we would include neutral Feedback in the Positive Feedback percentage calculation, it seems that most sellers didn't realize this would impact their Feedback percentage.

We know that seeing your positive Feedback percentage drop is hard. But I want to be clear about why we did this. By not including neutral Feedback in our calculation, we were actually doing a disservice to our best sellers. Let me explain with an example.

Say two sellers have equal 1% negative rates.

  • Under the old calculation – both sellers would have a 99% Positive Feedback percentage.
  • Under the new (current) calculation – we count neutrals. If one seller has a neutral rate of 0.5% (roughly the site average), and the other has a neutral rate of 2%, under today’s calculation, their Feedback percentages are 98.5% and 97%, respectively. By including the neutral Feedback we are advantaging a seller who is providing a better overall customer experience (the one who now has a 98.5%), which is the right thing to do to create great buying experiences on eBay.

When looking at your percentage, I encourage you not to focus on the drop in your Feedback percentage as a raw number, but rather to think of it in context with other sellers' percentages on eBay.

Feedback Percentage Calculation
We've also received questions around how we now calculate the Positive Feedback percentage.

It's based on Feedback left for your transactions that ended in the past 52 weeks, including Feedback that qualifies for the repeat credit.

On your Feedback Profile page (found by clicking on your Feedback score), the "How is Feedback Percentage calculated?" link gives a numerical explanation. Here are the details in a nutshell:

  • The percentage is based on the last 12 months of transactions
  • The total number of positive Feedbacks for the period is divided by the total number of Feedbacks (including positive, negative and neutral). This includes repeat Feedback from members that have left Feedback for transactions that ended in different weeks.

Multiple Feedbacks left by the same member for transactions that occurred within the same week is not included in the calculation. For example, if a buyer purchased two items from you today and left you two positive Feedbacks seven days from now, only one Feedback is counted towards your Feedback score and Feedback percentage. This is to prevent Feedback manipulation.

Impact on PowerSeller Status
With the changes, some sellers may find that their overall Feedback percentage has fallen below the 98% threshold to maintain PowerSeller status. To help those who have fallen below the minimum 98% threshold get back above 98%, we will provide a 60-day grace period in which these accounts will retain PowerSeller status. After the 60-day period (ending on July 20), any PowerSeller who no longer meets the 98% threshold will no longer be eligible for PowerSeller status and benefits.

Other changes to your Feedback Percentage
Some sellers may notice a discrepancy between their Feedback percentage on the item page and on their Feedback Profile page – this is a temporary condition as we complete the system changes, and this information will be in sync again within a few days.

One last note: we have not yet removed negative and neutral Feedback left by members who are currently suspended. We'll begin doing so in late May, and it will take us a few weeks to complete. So, if you have negative or neutral Feedback from a suspended member, it should be removed by early June, at which point it will no longer affect your Feedback score and percentage.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions. You can also read my interview with our eBay Ink blog that addresses several other member questions as well. And if you haven't already done so, please read our information page and updated FAQ for more details.

Sincerely,

Brian Burke
Director, Global Feedback Policy

***Turbo Lister: New Sign-in Process***

May 20, 2008 | 05:43PM PST/PT

Gui Bastos
Hi everyone...This is Gui Bastos with eBay's Seller Tools team. By now you've hopefully read John Canfield's recent announcement about how we're keeping the site safe through our Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation initiative. With the latest Turbo Lister Update, we're bringing a similar measure of safety to Turbo Lister, called "authentication and authorization." Simply put, it provides more effective security against unauthorized use of your Turbo Lister account.

How authentication and authorization works
The first time you connect to the eBay site with Turbo Lister 6.5 or higher, you'll be asked to sign in and verify your User ID and password (authentication). In the next step (authorization), you'll get the appropriate privileges to perform your Turbo Lister activities. During this process, we'll give your computer an encrypted security code that only eBay can read, which will be valid for 18 months.

You won't have to go through this process again for 18 months, unless you add a new user to your Turbo Lister subscription, or you uninstall and reinstall Turbo Lister on your computer. This update is optional, as always, but in the interest of making the overall eBay marketplace safer, this process will become mandatory later this year (we'll keep you posted).

For more information about authentication and authorization, please visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Sincerely,

Gui Bastos
Seller Tools team

***eBay Giving Works –- New Program Enhancements***

May 20, 2008 | 03:02PM PST/PT

Kristin Cunningham

Hi everyone...This is Kristin Cunningham, General Manager of eBay Giving Works. Since we launched eBay Giving Works in November 2003, you've blown us away with your generosity – raising over $140M for nonprofits as a global Community. I'm excited to now announce that we're enhancing the program this week, making it even easier for you to support your favorite causes on eBay.

We're streamlining the process so that you no longer need to register separately with MissionFish (or leave a credit card on file with them) to sell with eBay Giving Works. All you'll need to do is accept the eBay Giving Works Terms & Conditions just one time and you're all set to create your charity listings. (Please note: Even if you've listed with eBay Giving Works before, you'll still need to accept the new Terms & Conditions before creating your next charity listing.)

Beginning May 22nd, once you accept the Terms & Conditions, you will be able to:

  • Manage your eBay Giving Works activity directly in My eBay, from your new Donation Account. Here you'll find your listings, donations, tax receipts, and more.
  • Pay the donations that result from your sold listings using the same payment method you have on file with eBay.
  • Request donation refunds directly through the Unpaid Item process.
  • Sell with eBay Giving Works even if you are located outside the U.S.

Though sellers will no longer need a My MissionFish Seller Account, MissionFish isn’t going away. They will continue to power the technology behind the program, collect and distribute donations and tax receipts, and help nonprofits make the most of eBay Giving Works.

A new look
As part of this upgrade, we're re-launching the eBay Giving Works site, giving it a fresh new look and making it easier for you to find the information you need to use the program successfully. From the new eBay Giving Works site, nonprofits can also easily go to the newly redesigned MissionFish site, where they can access user-friendly features and tools to successfully fundraise on eBay.

Scheduled outage during the upgrade
As you can imagine, this upgrade is a complicated process and requires close coordination between eBay and MissionFish. As a result, some eBay Giving Works features will be unavailable starting approximately at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Wednesday, May 21st. This outage may last up to 24 hours, but we will bring the program back online as soon as possible.

During this outage, you will not be able to create new eBay Giving Works listings (but listings created before and after the scheduled outage won't be affected). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and ask for your patience as we do our best to make sure that everything is working properly.

Join our online workshop
For more information about these improvements, please read our Frequently Asked Questions. You can also learn more by participating in our workshop on Tuesday, May 27th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

We look forward to hearing your feedback and hope these changes will make it easier for you to support your favorite nonprofits through eBay Giving Works!

Sincerely,

Kristin Cunningham

***Now Available - International Site Visibility Listing Upgrade***

May 20, 2008 | 10:55AM PST/PT

Frederick Crosby
Hello everyone...This is Frederick Crosby, Director of eBay's Cross-Border Trade team. The new International Site Visibility feature that Stephanie Tilenius announced at the end of March is now available for sellers who want to bolster their international trade.

When you choose this optional upgrade in the Sell Your Item form, your item will be displayed in regular search results for buyers shopping on eBay UK. This way, your item receives added exposure for less than it would cost to list directly on both sites. Although this feature is only available for eBay UK today, we'll be adding more markets as time goes on.

Outline of Cross-Border Options for Your Listing
We saw a lot of good questions about sellers' international options after our original announcement. Here's an outline to help US sellers understand the different ways to get seen by buyers in the UK.

  1. When you list on eBay.com and select "international shipping" on your listing, UK buyers will see it when:

    • they customize their search to find international items - your listing will appear within the regular search results, along with UK-based items.

    • their search returns a low number of UK-based items - relevant international items, such as yours, will be displayed in a box underneath the results (just like on the US site).

  2. If you list directly on eBay UK, your listing will be displayed in search results just like any other UK-based listing. This would be completely separate from your US listings, and you would pay the UK listing fees.

  3. NEW!! - If you list your item on eBay.com with the new International Visibility listing upgrade, your item will be shown in regular UK search results.

Now sellers also have the option of using our International Site Visibility upgrade to give the items you've already listed in the US extra exposure in the UK. Simply select the "International Site Visibility" upgrade during the listing process, and your item will be shown in the regular UK search results like other UK-based items.

More exposure means more potential buyers – and selling internationally is especially attractive right now given the weak nature of the US dollar compared to other currencies.

Important note: Whenever selling internationally, make sure to specify your international shipping costs. Buyers are more likely to purchase items with this information, and it can positively affect where your item is displayed in search results when the buyer is using the Best Match sort order.

International Site Visibility Listing Upgrade Fees
In the US, the fees to use this optional upgrade are as follows:

Start Price Upgrade Fee
$0.01 - 9.99 10 cents
$10 - 49.99 20 cents
$50+ 40 cents

Also, as a reminder, per Stephanie's note, our previous test to display Collectibles items across markets has now been turned off as well.

I hope this helps more sellers increase their global reach and expand their businesses. For all the details, please see our information page.

Join our workshop
Join my team at an online workshop on Thursday, May 22nd from 10-11 a.m. PT to learn more about the International Visibility upgrade and how it can help your international sales. Bring your questions!

Sincerely,

Frederick Crosby
Director, eBay Cross-Border Trade team

***eBay Policy Updates***

May 19, 2008 | 01:32PM PST/PT

John McDonald
Hello...This is John McDonald, Sr. Director of US Trust & Safety. We're making a number of changes to our listing policies to benefit both our buyers and sellers. First, these changes will create more choice and selection for buyers and make it easier for them to find what they're looking for. Second, these policy changes add flexibility, convenience and cost-savings for our sellers.

Also, we wanted to give you an update on how to monitor your standing as a seller and improve the visibility of your listings.

New – more flexibility for selling similar items
Two important changes are being made to simplify our policies and add convenience for our sellers.

  1. Removal of the Choice Policy
First, starting immediately, the Choice Policy, which has required sellers to list similar items in different sizes and colors in separate listings, has been removed. Sellers may now create listings that offer choices such as size, color, and configuration. For example, a shoe seller may now offer a particular shoe in multiple sizes in one listing.

This change adds significant cost savings and convenience for sellers, while helping them delight their buyers with more choice.

Keep in mind that it will continue to be the seller's responsibility to accurately represent the available inventory in a listing. Being unable to fulfill a buyer's choice of a stated offering is considered a violation of the Seller Non-Performance Policy. Offering a choice of completely different items in the same listing is also prohibited under the Fee Circumvention Policy.

  2. Removal of the Multiple Listings Limit Policy
Starting early June, the Multiple Listings Limit Policy, which limits sellers to 15 identical listings at any one time, will be removed. Soon sellers will be allowed an unlimited number of identical listings.

To prevent buyers from being overwhelmed by identical listings, advancements in Finding will limit the display of duplicates from the same seller. The listing displayed will be determined by the sort option that the buyer chooses, such as Time Ending Soonest, Newly Listed, Total Cost, and Best Match.

Also, the number of listings from any one seller will be limited to ten per page, unless the only available listings that remain are from the same seller. This change ensures that buyers will have a variety of sellers to choose from. (For more information, please read our Frequently Asked Questions).

New simplified Search & Browse Manipulation Policy
Starting in early June a new Search & Browse Manipulation Policy will take the place of the Keyword Spamming, Misleading Title, Miscategorization, and Brand Name Misuse policies. The new Search Manipulation Policy simplifies the guidelines for sellers, prohibiting any unfair methods of diverting members to their listings. This includes any addition to a listing not related to the item being sold or other activity that harms the shopping experience by making it difficult for buyers to find the items they're looking for. More information can be found in our FAQs.

Mystery Auctions prohibited
Due to the high rate of claims and bad buying experiences related to these listings, starting early June, the Chance Policy will now also include Mystery Auctions as a prohibited item.

Updated Links Policy
Starting in July, an updated Links Policy will take the place of links guidelines that were previously covered in several policy areas. Under the updated policy, only specific types of links are allowed in a seller's listings or other content on eBay, including eBay Store pages, About Me pages, eBay Blogs, Reviews and Guides, and forums. Allowed under the new policy are links to:

  • Any page on eBay or an eBay property including PayPal, Half.com and StubHub.
  • Photos of the item for sale, as long as the page displaying the photos does not offer, or link to, a site that offers a product or service for sale off eBay.
  • Embedded videos within a listing, as long as the content and format comply with all eBay policies for videos.
  • Third-party solutions and services directly related to the particular listing.

Monitor your seller standing and increase visibility in Search
An expanded version of the Seller Dashboard will be available this week, with more information about where you stand and how to maximize your business on eBay. We encourage you to check it often. Watch for a follow-up post on this Announcement Board as soon as the expanded Dashboard is available.

It's important to note that as part of eBay's ongoing efforts to raise the bar on selling standards, violations of eBay policies are subject to serious consequences, including restrictions, forfeiture of insertion fees, seller demotion in search results, and suspension. This is intended to drive any selling practices that hurt buyers and good sellers alike off eBay.

As we continue to raise the bar, we also wanted to give you an update on changes we've made to Best Match since the rollout of this new sort order in March. As you know, Best Match considers a number of factors including Time Ending Soonest, item relevance, other item attributes, and seller performance.

Since launch, we've been monitoring and making adjustments. Some of our adjustments will result in a larger number of sellers with below average performance scores being lowered in Best Match search results. If either of the following conditions apply to you, the visibility of your listings may be reduced:

  • Your 30-day shipping cost DSR is 4.5 and below
  • Your buyer satisfaction rate (shown on the dashboard) appears as "needs improvement," "poor" or "unacceptable."

If you're in this situation, we want to help you get back to the top in Best Match. Many sellers are discovering that making small changes in their approach can make a positive difference in their DSRs and business results. Here are some tips on how you can improve your buyer satisfaction and DSRs.

Check our previous announcement for more complete details on what impacts the visibility of your items in Best Match search results.

Good news for our top performing sellers
Starting this week, sellers with 4.7 and above on all 4 DSRs over the last 30 days may start to see an additional boost in their search standing in Best Match. It's important for good sellers to be rewarded for providing excellent buying experiences. We're going to test this in a few categories to start, and will expand to the others shortly afterwards.

To make sure you stay in top standing, get familiar with eBay's User Agreement, monitor your Seller Dashboard (once it becomes available) on a regular basis to be aware of potential issues and changes in your status, and resolve any issues in a timely fashion. Sellers who delight their buyers will win on eBay, and we thank the vast majority of sellers who abide by our policies and strive to deliver the best buying experience possible.

For more information on the changes above, please see our Policy Change FAQ's.

Sincerely,

John McDonald

***Original: A Message from Brian Burke – Upcoming Feedback Changes***

May 07, 2008 | 09:03AM PST/PT

Brian Burke
Hello everyone...as we announced back in January, we're making some bold changes to how Feedback on eBay works. As we get closer to our launch, I wanted to review the changes we've discussed and provide some additional detail and updates.

As a recap, here's what we announced in January that is scheduled to launch the week of May 19th in North America (which includes eBay.com in the US, as well as eBay.ca and eBay.cafr in Canada):

  • Sellers may only leave positive feedback for buyers
  • We will remove negative and neutral Feedback if a member becomes suspended
  • Members can leave Feedback up to 60 days after a transaction (down from 90)
  • We will remove Feedback when a buyer fails to respond to the unpaid item process.
  • Members will receive credit for weekly repeat Feedback (going back to 1996)
  • We will base the Positive Feedback Percentage on the past 12 months of activity (and include neutral Feedback in the calculation)
  • The PowerSeller Program will use the same calculation method described above to determine eligibility for the PS Program for the Positive Feedback percentage requirement of 98% positive.

Next I'd like to share some additional detail beyond what we discussed in the original post:

  • In January we mentioned that we'd block buyers from leaving negative or neutral Feedback for 3 days for sellers "with a track record." Since January, we've made the decision to increase the wait period to 7 days and define "track record" as active PowerSellers who have been on eBay for at least 12 months.

We studied the factors that increased risk to buyers the most and found there are three: a) a seller's Positive Feedback percentage and DSRs, b) the volume of a seller's Feedback – both in total and on an ongoing basis and c) length of time a seller has been on site.

We selected PowerSellers who have been on eBay at least 12 months in order to minimize risk to buyers, because:

      a. PowerSellers have to meet quality thresholds for both conventional Feedback and, starting in July, for Detailed Seller Ratings

      b. PowerSellers have to meet volume requirements – both in total and on an ongoing basis

      c. One year on-site proved to be an important predictor of lower risk

All three factors prove important to predicting the risk to buyers – removing any one of them would increase risk to a level we are not currently comfortable with at this time.

We will watch all aspects of the new Feedback system very carefully, studying how the marketplace responds and we will make changes as we see appropriate.

  • We mentioned that we'd be aligning the Mutual Feedback Withdrawal process with the new system. After much consideration, we've made the decision to remove the Mutual Feedback Withdrawal process. The reason is that – under the new rules - it opens sellers up to extortion. As part of this decision, Mutual Agreement from third-party Feedback mediation services, such as SquareTrade, will also no longer be accepted.

Over the last several months, we've had many conversations with our customers – both buyers and sellers – and we've had the opportunity to consider ways we can address some of the top concerns we've heard. Based on the input we've received from you, I want to share some additional modifications we're making:

  • We are adding language in the leave Feedback flow for buyers who are in a cross-border transaction that reminds them that international transactions usually take longer to complete.

  • We've improved the interstitial page that all buyers see before leaving negative or neutral Feedback; the updated page offers a stronger message to buyers about the need to communicate with the seller, to allow enough time for the transaction to complete, and to keep Feedback factual.

  • And later this month...

    • In addition to expanding the 3-day block to 7 days, we are introducing a new Buyer Requirement that will allow sellers to block buyers who have been reported by other sellers for eBay buying policy violations (such as Feedback abuse, or email threats).

    • We're expanding the scope of the existing Buyer Requirement for unpaid items, so that it supports more comprehensive blocking of buyers who have a history of non-payment.

    • We've improved the process that sellers use to report buyers for policy violations.

    • Detailed Seller Ratings will be coming to Half in the next couple months. Watch for more information on this via email and on the Half discussion forum in the next couple of weeks.

As you can see, these changes represent a huge investment in transforming the way Feedback works, so that it better serves today's marketplace. Ultimately, the goal is to restore trust and transparency and improve the buying experience, while offering needed checks and balances that ensure our sellers who provide excellent service benefit.

Sincerely,

Brian Burke
Director, Global Feedback Policy

***Introducing 'PayPal Pay Later' in eBay Checkout***

May 15, 2008 | 11:29AM PST/PT

Carla Alford

Hi everyone...I'm Carla Alford with PayPal's Credit team. For the past few years, buyers have been able to take advantage of 0% APR and other flexible financing options through our line of credit offerings. Today we're launching a new credit service for buyers called PayPal Pay Later, which is a transactional credit offer that gives buyers even more options when paying for items on eBay.

PayPal Pay Later gives approved buyers "no payments for 90 days" on certain transactions, and will be available directly within eBay's new Checkout process. If you select this option, you can get these special financing terms when you use your existing eBay MasterCard, PayPal Plus card, or PayPal Buyer Credit account. Or you can quickly apply for a transactional credit account.

The availability and details of these special financing offers will vary over time, and will be based on the item price as well as other factors.

Sellers get paid right away
The PayPal Pay Later option appears in Checkout automatically. As always, if the buyer finances their item by using PayPal Pay Later, the seller will receive the full payment amount right away.

For more details about PayPal Pay Later, please see our Frequently Asked Questions.

Sincerely,

Carla Alford

***A Message from Jeff King: The Finding Playground is Back***

May 12, 2008 | 10:17AM PST/PT

Jeff King
Hello...This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. After a few weeks offline, the Playground is back! Although it's still a work in progress, you can try the latest Finding features on the eBay Playground. We hope you'll kick the tires on the new experience and let us know what you think!

As a reminder, the Playground previews of some of the technology that will be released this year as part of eBay's Finding 2.0 efforts. Buyers and sellers who have used the Playground in the past will be pleased to know we've made many changes inspired by your suggestions since last fall.

For instance, you'll discover the new Finding navigation is much improved. The navigation is driven more heavily by seller-specified item specifics and is more consistent with the classic category structure that you are familiar with and prefer (we heard you loud and clear on this). The beloved 'Snapshot View' returns for fans of browsing the site visually. And, you can add a 'Watch this item' link by using the Customize your results feature. This lets you see which items you're already watching, right from the search results page.

There are many additional projects in the works for Finding 2.0 as well, including an exciting new way you can navigate and refine your queries. You'll see these changes added to the new experience in the coming months.

More about Finding 2.0 Launch Plans
During May and June, we'll be releasing even more new features. We'll also be adding an opt-in ability that allows members to make the new experience their default Finding experience.

My team and I want to help answer your questions and ensure you have the best experience possible as we start to transition to the new Finding technology. Look forward to online workshops and online "office hours" on the Search Discussion Forum, and stay tuned to the General Announcement board for more information!

Sincerely,

Jeff King
Senior Director, Finding

***A Message from Kristina Klausen - Shipping Updates***

May 09, 2008 | 04:34PM PST/PT

Kristina Klausen
Hi everyone - I'm back with a number of important shipping updates.

New! Free Shipping for Calculated Listings
Now sellers can offer Free Shipping when using calculated shipping. (Previously, Free Shipping could only be offered with flat rate shipping.) In the Sell Your Item form - and coming soon in Turbo Lister - you can check the "Free Shipping" checkbox next to the shipping service you'd like to offer free to your buyers. You can still use calculated shipping for up to two other shipping services if you wish.

Remember, listings with Free Shipping will receive the new eye-catching Free Shipping icon that appears on the view item page. (See our previous post for more info.)

New! Added flexibility when shipping with Freight
We also just introduced the ability for sellers to specify they are shipping with Freight (a special shipping service for extra-large items), even if they're not using the Freight Calculator. Specifying that you're using Freight will help set proper expectations for your buyers and lead to higher buyer satisfaction. For sellers who want the convenience of real-time zip code-based quotes, the FreightQuote calculator can be included in listings.

Coming in July: Specified Shipping required
Starting in July, sellers will be required to specify domestic shipping services and costs. (This was first announced in March).

Buyer satisfaction and DSR scores are higher when sellers specify their shipping costs/services. For this reason, items without specified shipping receive less exposure in Best Match. We encourage the minority of sellers who don't already specify shipping in the shipping details section of their listing to do so as soon as possible.

For more for tips on how to keep your buyers happy and your Shipping DSRs healthy, check out this page.

Coming Soon: More flexibility to edit shipping for live multi-quantity items
We're working to give sellers more flexibility to edit their shipping details in live listings. Currently, once someone buys an item from a multi-quantity Store Inventory or Fixed Price listing, the shipping details are no longer editable. Soon, sellers will be able to edit these shipping details, even after a purchase has been made, without having to cancel and relist the item. We'll provide full details when this functionality launches in the next few weeks.

Reminder: USPS Price and Fee Change, Monday May 12
Finally, as a reminder, USPS is changing their prices starting Monday, May 12. For listings that use the eBay Shipping Calculator, prices will automatically be updated starting around midnight tonight, since these items are likely to be shipped on or after Monday. The new prices will be available in Label Printing starting Sunday evening, May 11, including new discounts for Priority Mail and Express Mail. For more details see the prior post, or visit the USPS site here.

Sincerely,

Kristina Klausen
Senior Director, Shipping

***A Message from Lorrie Norrington – eBay Live! Update***

May 05, 2008 | 09:41AM PST/PT

Lorrie Norrington
Since taking on the role of President, eBay Marketplace Operations in January of this year, I’ve had an opportunity to meet and talk with thousands of community members in places like New Orleans, Washington DC, San Jose and elsewhere. I am looking forward to meeting many more of you in Chicago at eBay Live! June 19-21, 2008.

To date, 2008 has been an exciting year full of significant changes for eBay and accordingly for many of you, our customers. In the keynote address at eBay Live! this year, myself and John Donahoe, our CEO, will be speaking very directly about the future of eBay.

Besides the speeches, eBay Live! always offers the opportunity to meet with thousands of your peers, talk with solutions providers, mingle with eBay staff and learn from our hands-on tutorials and seminars. And while 2008 is not the last eBay Live!, it is the last one for a while.

In 2009 we are focusing our energy on smaller venues to facilitate more face-to-face interactions with our customers and community. While I can’t yet name all of the places we’ll be visiting in 2009, I can say that we intend to spend more quality time with more of you in 2009 than we have in recent memory. So while eBay Live! will not be held in 2009, we will be back with eBay Live! on August 12-14, 2010 in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center.

In the meantime, we’re eager to see you this year in Chicago, so if you haven’t yet registered, you can do so now at www.ebay.com/eBayLive. I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Lorrie Norrington
President, eBay Marketplace Operations

***Upcoming Workshops: Trusted Selling With Identity Confirmation and International Site Visibility Listing Upgrade***

May 02, 2008 | 12:06PM PST/PT

We would like to invite you to attend the following workshops next week:

Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.

eBay recently announced a new safety initiative called Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation that helps protect members from unauthorized listings in a seller's name. (One of the ways criminals attempt to defraud people on eBay is by gaining access to member accounts with well-established reputations which they then use to set up listings in that person's name.) Find out more about the enhanced safety benefits of Identity Confirmation and how to make it easier to confirm your identity if you are prompted to do so. John Canfield, Senior Director, eBay Trust and Safety, will be available during this workshop to explain the security benefits of the initiative and provide tips and advice for all sellers.

How To Reach International Buyers Through the International Site Visibility Listing Upgrade
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Pacific time.

International selling is becoming increasingly important for eBay sellers, especially as currency fluctuations continue and there are more international buyers looking to buy from US sellers. Join this workshop and learn about the new feature we just launched, the International Site Visibility listing upgrade, which gives sellers the option to list the same item on secondary eBay country site to get even more international exposure. We'll also talk about all of the other existing ways in which you can get international visibility for your items.

How to Find Your Place in the Market: Niche Markets for eBay Sellers
This workshop will be held on Thursday, May 8th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time.

There are millions of products you can sell very successfully on eBay. You can either try to compete with the superstores of the world by selling mainstream products, OR you can find a smaller, more select group of customers to cater to. Colette Marshall from WorldwideBrands.com explains why you can do better with products that you won't find on any superstore shelves, and shares how to source products for the niche market that's right for your eBay business.

Workshops are hosted in discussion threads on the Workshops Board. To get to the Workshops Board:

  • Go to www.ebay.com
  • Click on Community at the top of the page
  • Click on "Workshops" in the "Events" section
  • This will bring you to the threaded Workshops Board

***Consumer Product Safety Commission - Children's Items Recalled the Week of April 28th***

May 01, 2008 | 04:47PM PST/PT

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall for the following items:

  • Nintendo character-themed lapel pins due to a lead paint hazard
  • "Lowes" storage bins due to a lead paint hazard

eBay takes recalled items very seriously, and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues.
