***Coming Soon: Updated Version of Turbo Lister ***

April 30, 2007 | 04:47PM PST/PT

Gui Bastos
Hi everyone, I'm Gui Bastos, and I work on eBay's Seller Tools. This week we're releasing some new features in Turbo Lister that we're very excited about. Our goal with this release is to make things easier and save time for our sellers - several of the key listing management functions previously found only in My eBay will be included within Turbo Lister, eliminating the need to jump back and forth between tools.

Here are the highlights of the new features:

  • View and Edit your Active and Scheduled Listings. You can now view and edit your live and scheduled listings right from Turbo Lister. Simply make your desired changes within the tool, click on "Synchronize" in the top navigation bar, and your listings will be updated on the site.

  • Relist or Sell Similar Items. This long-awaited feature is now here! You can Relist items or use the Sell Similar option in Turbo Lister by using the new buttons within the Listing Activity view.

  • More Time-Saving Options. We've added the ability to "Find & Replace" text within your listings. In addition, you'll be able to use Windows shortcuts to copy/paste information between views, and to export data from Turbo Lister to a spreadsheet program like Excel.

To learn more, and to download Turbo Lister, please see our information page.

We will also be hosting a workshop to cover these new features and answer your questions on Thursday, May 3rd from 11:00 a.m. to noon Pacific time. I hope you’ll stop by!

Sincerely,

Gui Bastos
Seller Experience Team

***A Message from Rob Chesnut – Update on Safeguarding Member IDs***

April 30, 2007 | 01:13PM PST/PT

Rob Chesnut
In January, we introduced an important initiative called Safeguarding Member IDs (read my announcement from January 8, 2007). This initiative, also known as SMI, is designed to protect eBay's bidders from unwanted commercial and malicious spam, such as phishing, spoof, and fake Second Chance Offers. We've had a few months now to watch SMI in action, and we are pleased with the results so far. Since introducing SMI, we have seen a significant reduction in fake Second Chance Offers and other types of solicitations sent to bidders on higher-priced auction-style listings.

We've also received a lot of feedback from the Community about how we can improve the user interface, and we've been working hard to do so. Specifically, we want to replace some of the transparency that was removed when SMI was first introduced, without affecting the protection we're providing for bidders.

This week, we'll be making the following adjustments to SMI:

  1. Enhancements to Search by Bidder. When members use the Search by Bidder feature (found under Advanced Search), they’ll now be able to see all the details of that bidder’s bidding activity on items below the $200 threshold.

  2. Sellers can use Advanced Search to research potential buyers. Sellers will be able to use Advanced Search to conduct full research on their current bidders for a 48 hour period after the bid is placed. In addition, they will also be able to research the activity of any member who sends them an Ask Seller a Question email or uses Best Offer within a 48 hour period of the email/offer being sent.

  3. Safeguarding Member IDs on listings with a Reserve or Buy It Now over $200. If a bidder bids on a listing where the Reserve price or Buy It Now is above $200, their ID will be anonymized just as if they had placed a bid over $200.

  4. Anonymous bidder IDs for Best Offers. The IDs of buyers on the Best Offer history page will no longer be fully displayed to viewers – the last part of their ID will be hidden by asterisks. However, the seller of the item will be able to see the ID in full, as before.

To learn more about SMI, please read our FAQs, which have been updated to reflect these new changes. As always, I appreciate your support as we work to keep the marketplace safe.

Sincerely,

Rob Chesnut
Senior Vice President, Global Trust & Safety

Don't miss your chance to learn about eBay from me, as well as other great instructors.

Our one-day program is only $59, and includes the opportunity to network and learn from other sellers. You can even bring a friend for free if you register before 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on April 27th. Register now!

April 20, 2007 | 05:07PM PST/PT

We would like to invite you to attend the following workshops this week:

eBay Chatter Blog

USPS Domestic Rate Changes
This workshop will be held on Monday, 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time. The Postal Service has announced rate changes effective May 14th, 2007. Please join the USPS to learn about how these changes will impact your business.

Introduction to the Sell Your Item form
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 24th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time. Join eBay staff to learn about the Sell Your Item form. During the workshop, the eBay Sell Your Item team will answer questions and walk everyone through the creation of a listing using SYI. Please join us for this informational and interactive workshop.

A day is the life of an eBay Trading Assistant!
This workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 25th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. An eBay Trading Assistant is someone who sells other people's items on eBay. For their services, they are compensated by a negotiated percentage of the sale price of the items sold. The eBay Trading Assistant reports this type of income as commissions, not from products sold. There are qualifications you must meet by eBay standards to be a registered and featured eBay Trading Assistant listed with eBay. Please join Phyllis Wischer for an overview of a day in the life of a Trading Assistant.

USPS International Product Redesign and Rate Changes
This workshop will be held on Thursday, April 26th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Pacific time. The Postal Service has made their International products more clear cut and easy to use. Trusted USPS Domestic product names – First Class Mail, Priority Mail and Express Mail – have been extended to International shipping. ***Shipping Message: What eBay Is Doing to Prepare for the USPS Rate and Service Changes on May 14, 2007***

April 19, 2007 | 09:44AM PST/PT

Kristina Klausen
Hi everyone. This is Kristina Klausen with eBay's Shipping team. As many of you know, the U.S. Postal Service has announced changes to their rates and services that will take effect on May 14. If you plan on selling in May, I encourage you to learn about the changes and make any necessary adjustments to your listings to make the transition as smooth as possible for you and your potential buyers. You can learn more at the eBay Shipping Center, our eBay FAQ on the subject and the USPS Web site.

Some of the USPS changes that may impact you include:

Domestic Shipments

  1. USPS rates are changing for items shipped within the U.S.
  2. USPS Priority Mail dimensional weight rates will now apply for certain large packages shipped to select zones within the U.S.
  3. First Class Mail rates are changing based on package type (envelope, package, etc.).

International Shipments

  1. As part of a rebranding effort, some services for shipments outside the U.S. are being removed, and others are being added.
  2. International Flat Rate Boxes are being introduced, with flat rate pricing to Canada, Mexico, and other countries.

What We're Doing To Help
Shipping is a crucial element of any eBay transaction, and we're working hard to make this rate change transition as smooth as possible for both sellers and buyers. Here are some of the resources we'll have available for you in early May:

  • Rate Change Information in the Shipping Center - To help sellers determine what USPS changes may impact them and what their options are, we're updating the eBay Shipping Center. You'll find detailed information about how the rate change may impact you and how you can prepare. This will be a great resource for you to use to adjust the shipping services you offer, if necessary.

  • Updated "Research Rates" Tool in the Sell Your Item form - You'll be able to research the new rates and services during the listing process in the new Sell Your Item form. Starting in early May, you'll be able to click on the "See new rates" link in the Research Rates tool to see the future rate for that service.

  • Bulk editing for current listings - To save you time, we're enhancing the Mass Listing Editor so you can edit shipping details on listings that are eligible to be revised with new rates and services in bulk. If you use Turbo Lister, you can also edit your shipping details in bulk. This new functionality will be available in both tools in early May.

  • eBay's Shipping Calculator updated in early May - If you use the Shipping Calculator, the new rates will update automatically in early May to accommodate the majority of items likely to ship after the new rates take effect. For you and your buyers, the Shipping Calculator takes much of the work out of accommodating the USPS changes. You can read more about the timing of the changes at the eBay Shipping Center.

  • PayPal Shipping Labels updated on May 14 - PayPal shipping labels will calculate the new shipping rates to coincide with the USPS changes. This means all shipping labels printed on PayPal after May 14 will reflect the new rates and services.

  • Discount for international USPS shipping labels printed with PayPal - Beginning on May 14, the following discounts will automatically be applied to USPS international labels printed with PayPal:

    • Priority Mail International – 5%
    • Express Mail International – 8%

Learn more – Join an Online Workshop
To help sellers prepare for the changes, my team will host two online workshops along with our special guests from the USPS.

Monday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Pacific time - We'll review the changes to the USPS domestic services, as well as options for sellers who will be impacted.

Thursday, April 26 at 1 p.m. Pacific time - We'll cover the international changes in detail, including discontinued services and new services being offered.

Beginning this week my team will also hold regular "office hours" on the Shipping discussion board where we'll be answering your shipping-related questions. We invite you to stop by!

Sincerely,

Kristina Klausen
Senior Director, Shipping

***Starting Today: Link to Video To Describe Your Listing***

April 16, 2007 | 06:12PM PST/PT

Jim Ambach
Hi everyone...this is Jim Ambach with the Seller Experience team. Online video has become increasingly popular among internet users, and is quickly becoming a standard on many sites. It's proven to be an effective way of capturing people's attention by being entertaining, as well as informative.

Over the past couple of years, it's also become easier for people to create and host their own videos. Video can often help you tell an engaging story and share information more effectively than plain text.

For these reasons, we think the time is right to bring the video experience to eBay! I'm pleased to announce that starting today, sellers will be able to link from their listings to videos that describe their items.

Curious? Check out some examples
To kick off this new opportunity to promote your items -- and help get your creative ideas flowing -- we worked with a few film-makers (who are also eBay members) to produce videos for items they had to sell. Each listing example uses a video to tell a story about their item in a fun, interesting way.

We hope these videos help inspire you to come up with ways you can use video to market your listings. Check out our examples:

How to include video in your listing
We've made adding video to your listings as simple as possible, while still retaining standards that will help keep the site safe.

  1. First, when you create your video, please follow our simple policy requirements.
  2. Next, upload your video to one of five approved video hosting sites: YouTube, Google, MySpace, Microsoft, or AOL. We've selected these sites for their combination of popularity, ease of use, and the protection they offer against harmful programs being used inside the videos.
  3. Finally, include the link to the video in your item description (videos cannot be embedded within listings), and you should be all set.

Here's to some great videos!

Sincerely,

Jim Ambach
Vice President, Seller Experience

Helen Ye
Hi everybody...I'm Helen Ye on the Seller Experience team. As our sellers and buyers know, pictures are an important element of most listings. I'm pleased to introduce several improvements to the Basic tool, the most popular tool for uploading images. Sellers will start to see these changes in the new SYI in the next few days.

        • Improved Look and Feel -- We've redesigned the tool to make it more intuitive and to make uploading multiple pictures at once much easier.

        • New Status Bars -- New status bars will let you see at a glance how far along your upload progress is.

        • New Options for Arranging Pictures -- Need your pictures to appear in a particular sequence within your listing? You'll be able to easily re-order or remove any of your pictures, regardless of the order in which they were uploaded.

***Listing Policy Clarification: Live Earth Tickets***

April 16, 2007 | 07:38AM PST/PT

Tickets to Live Earth, a worldwide series of concerts being held on July 7th to benefit global environmental causes, will be going on sale shortly. Because of the limited number of tickets that will be available, we expect that some of these tickets will be offered for sale on eBay. We have been working with Live Earth to further their fundraising efforts, and due to the unique, global, and charitable nature of the event, we will apply the following restrictions on the sales of these tickets:

  • All Live Earth ticket listings in the US must be listed with eBay Giving Works, our dedicated program for charity listings.
  • At least 20% of the final sale price must be donated to the Alliance for Climate Protection – the organization that Live Earth supports in the US.

To learn more about eBay Giving Works, please see our information page.

***Upcoming Workshops: Capturing Shoppers by Fine Tuning Listing Strategies and SKYROCKET Your Spring and Summer Sales***

April 13, 2007 | 01:57PM PST/PT

We would like to invite you to attend the following workshops this week:

eBay Chatter Blog

Capturing Shoppers by Fine Tuning Listing Strategies
This workshop will be held on Monday, April 16th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Pacific time. In this workshop, Debbie Levitt, President of Certified Provider As Was, will discuss how to use data to fine tune your listings strategies. Better decisions about listing strategies can lead to more sales, higher bids, and lower fees. This workshop will also include general strategy suggestions such as Store vs. Core and Auctions vs. Fixed Price.

SKYROCKET Your Spring and Summer Sales
This workshop will be held on Tuesday, April 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Pacific time. Let the spring and summer shopping begin! A recent consumer shopping poll revealed that buyers are planning to spend 11% MORE on purchases this spring and summer season over last year. The category structure will be updated in mid-April based on feedback received from the eBay Community and from experts in the affected fields. You may provide category structure feedback at any time by clicking here.

A complete list of the new category structure can be found on Seller Central here.

Updated categories:

CAMERAS & PHOTO
We're adding a category for Digital Photo Frames.

We're expanding the US Coins and World Coins sections, increasing visibility for Canadian Coins, and adding a Geocoins category.

COLLECTIBLES
Look for an update to the Native Americana section.

COMPUTERS & NETWORKING
Servers will move up to the same level as Desktop PCs and Laptops.

CONSUMER ELECTRONICS
The Consumer Electronics area is being updated. Look for shorter category paths, new groupings of related products and new sections for products like general A/V Accessories and Batteries.

SPORTS MEMORABILIA, CARDS & FAN SHOP
Look for new 2007 categories throughout the Cards section. We're also adding two new NASCAR drivers to Fan Apparel & Souvenirs.

As always, you can move your item to another category by revising your listing here as long as it has not received a bid and there are more than 12 hours left in the listing.

***A Message From Rob Chesnut – Combating Online Fraud***

April 09, 2007 | 09:21AM PST/PT

Rob Chesnut
Hello...I'm Rob Chesnut, eBay's Senior Vice President in charge of Global Trust & Safety. As you may know, over the last several months we've been working on a number of initiatives that comprise a new, more proactive approach to securing the safety of the marketplace. For instance, last fall we implemented listing restrictions to help reduce counterfeits on the site. In January, we changed our buyer protection plan to encourage the use of safe, insured payments through PayPal. We've been protecting bidders on high-end items through the Safeguarding Members ID project, and we're testing Detailed Seller Ratings to help buyers choose sellers who offer the best customer experience through feedback 2.0, the next generation of our feedback system.

Early results from these and other behind-the-scenes efforts show we're moving in the right direction. We're seeing a significant reduction in fake Second Chance offers, for instance, and fewer reports of potential counterfeit listings in the categories most favored by scammers. Of course, as we make changes, the scammers also adapt their methods. While I'm pleased with our direction and progress, I also want to help the Community understand this is an ongoing effort that requires an aggressive long-term approach.

Some of these actions have caused some legitimate concerns in the Community, and we've worked hard to address them with education and communication. With Safeguarding Member IDs specifically, we're working to improve the user interface – we know this is the right policy, but we also know we can improve the user experience, and we're working on it.

We've launched feedback 2.0 on eight eBay international sites, and the initial reaction so far has been encouraging. We're closely watching how this improved feedback system works, and listening to feedback from eBay members in these markets.

Proactive Fraud Reduction
Today I want to let buyers and sellers know about another security measure we're taking. For safety reasons, items reportedly most favored by fraudsters may not be viewable for several hours before the listings are indexed into Search results. These new listings are still viewable on the site through My eBay or if you search for the specific item number; however, they are not immediately visible through a keyword search or Browse.

To maximize exposure for these listings and ensure that buyers who browse by category see these items, we've made an important change. Any listings impacted by this review process will appear in the "Newly Listed" sort based on when they are made visible in Search (as opposed to when they are listed.) This ensures they will appear at the top of default Browse results - as well as within the "Newly Listed" sort option for Search - where they belong.

What kinds of listings will be impacted?
Unfortunately, it's not possible for us to give you criteria, because that information could be used by scammers to work around our Trust and Safety efforts. Overall, however, we expect this security measure to impact only a fraction of listings.

Let me say that I understand that this has some impact for our sellers, but with the change to how we sort listings, and the fact that most bidding occurs in the final 12 hours of a listing, we believe it's the right step to take. I know we share the same goal – to keep eBay a welcoming, safe marketplace for both our buyers and our sellers.

To learn more about these changes, please read our Frequently Asked Questions.

Join me at the next Town Hall
Trust & Safety will be the focus of Bill Cobb's next monthly Town Hall on April 30 at 2 p.m. Pacific time. I hope you’ll join me, Matt Halprin, and a number of other eBay leaders as we talk to Bill about Trust & Safety and answer member questions.

Again, I appreciate your support – working together, our efforts are helping keep the marketplace a safe place to buy and sell.

Sincerely,

Rob Chesnut
Senior Vice President, Global Trust & Safety

***eBay Stores Adds New Promotion Boxes for Stores Sellers***

April 02, 2007 | 03:03PM PST/PT

Gene Cook
Hi...I'm Gene Cook with eBay Stores.

As our Store sellers know, the use of Promotion Boxes within your Store is a great way to grab buyer interest. You can use them to highlight featured items or special sales, to encourage buyers to sign up for email newsletters, and much more.

Now, eBay Stores Promotion Boxes are even better. We're introducing some key improvements to help sellers create more engaging experiences for their buyers.

Easy Set-up
We've simplified the set-up process for a Promotion Box, making it faster and easier to create powerful Store merchandising. To create a Promotion Box, go to Manage My Store and:

  • Select Promotion Box Location
  • Select type of listings (example: On Sale items) to be featured
  • Select the Promotion Box Display Type.

It's that easy!

We've also added two new Promotion Boxes display types for you to use on your Auction-style or Fixed Price listings:

  • Slideshow – The Slideshow Promotion Box cycles through the Gallery pictures of your selected listings, letting you easily feature them all in one spot. It's snazzy!
  • Countdown – This animated Countdown Promotion Box does exactly that – it helps you generate buyer excitement by counting down the time left in the listing.

For more details about Promotion Boxes, please see our information page. We hope you like these new features for your eBay Stores!

Sincerely,

Gene Cook
