***From the Global Law Enforcement Team - Read Our Latest Success Stories on eBay's Police Blotter ***

February 26, 2007 | 01:58PM PST/PT

Mike Rou
Hi everyone... I'm Mike Rou, Senior Manager, Global Law Enforcement Operations. My team works with law enforcement agencies around the world to pursue, apprehend, and prosecute fraudsters who may use eBay or PayPal to commit their crimes. Due to the legal nature of the work my team does, our efforts to fight these crimes often need to stay behind the scenes. Here are some interesting facts for 2006:
        • We contributed to 549 arrests since January 2006, resulting in 351 prison years for the convicted criminals involved
        • We disrupted a major Tanzanian theft ring responsible for stealing $6MM in Hewlett Packard servers
        • We facilitated the first case between the Chinese Immigration and Customs Enforcement and China police which involved $840,000 in counterfeit DVDs
        • We trained around 200 Romanian police, judges and prosecutors on how to investigate and prosecute cyber criminals

Police Blotter
Once a case successfully closes, however, we want to make sure you hear about it. That's why we make regular updates to our Police Blotter, which you can find on eBay's Security & Resolution Center. Every 6 weeks or so, we update the Police Blotter with the latest news around our global law enforcement efforts.

An excerpt from a recent arrest story published on our Police Blotter:

"Anthony Wolter is accused of crediting his PayPal debit card with a former employer's credit card swipe machine. The case was initiated by the eBay/PayPal Fraud Investigation Team in California. The lead investigator contacted law enforcement with the case details and worked with Wells Fargo to identify the fraudulent transactions. When Mr. Wolter was approached by Detective Lake from the Tucson Police Department he fully confessed to the crime. In early January 2007, the accused pled guilty to credit card and bank fraud and was ordered to pay full restitution."

Remember -- we can only release the details of a case once law enforcement makes an arrest, so these stories are just a sample of the many cases we are involved in. If you have any comments or suggestions about the Police Blotter, please send an email to communityoutreach@ebay.com.

Stay Safe Online – Follow these safety tips!
I also want to remind you about some important safety tips. While we work hard to help find and prosecute criminals who threaten the safety of marketplace, ultimately, staying safe online is everyone's responsibility. Here are a few things everyone should remember:

Never pay with Western Union or Money Gram - That's right -- never! These methods have proven to be unsafe when paying someone you don't know. For this reason, it's against eBay's Accepted Payments Policy for a seller to request payment via these methods.
Be suspicious of any email that requests personal information – Be cautious of other emails that request you to click a link and submit your financial or personal information. Do not click on any links in this type of email if you can not verify it is authentic.

Monitor your account regularly for suspicious activity – Prevent problems by staying alert and catching any suspicious activity early. We recommend that you log into your eBay and PayPal accounts frequently to ensure that all the transactions listed are legitimate.

For more important Safety tips, please check out eBay's Security & Resolution Center.

I'll be back again next quarter with another update from the Global Law Enforcement Team. Until next time, stay safe!

Sincerely,

Mike Rou

The Global Law Enforcement Team

***Coming Soon: Changes to ISBN and File Exchange***

February 26, 2007 | 11:51AM PST/PT

Amy Skeeters-
Behrens
Hi everyone, I'm Amy Skeeters-Behrens from our Half.com team. I'm here with some important news for booksellers and File Exchange users.

As many of you already know book publishers began shifting from a 10-digit ISBN to a 13-digit ISBN earlier this year. Starting next week eBay and Half.com will begin supporting the new 13-digit format, as well as the existing 10-digit format. This means that whichever format your book was published under, you should have no problem finding it on the site.

Changes to File Exchange Format
To accommodate this change we also had to make some changes to the File Exchange downloadable file format. If you currently use any of the File Exchange downloadable files, whether you sell books or not, you will need to adjust your formatting to accommodate an additional data column. A complete rundown of the changes, and answers to related questions, can be found on this thread on the File Exchange board.

Sincerely,

Amy Skeeters-Behrens
Half.com

***Join Jason Miner at eBay University in Tampa, FL – Feb. 24***

February 21, 2007 | 05:34PM PST/PT

Jason Miner
Hi everyone…I'm Jason Miner of PayPal's Community Education team. I've been featured as a guest on Griff's eBay Radio show many times, and now I even have my own PayPal Radio show that I host Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. I'm also an instructor at eBay University, and I'm here to personally invite you to join me and our other esteemed instructors at our upcoming eBay University in Tampa, FL on February 24th.

I've been teaching at eBay Universities nationwide since 2002.  I began buying on eBay back in 1998 and have built a collection of over 20,000 comic books and 1,500 DVD's.  Over the years, my enthusiasm for collecting combined with space constraints have led me to become pretty successful at selling on eBay, as well!

Don't miss your chance to learn about eBay from me, as well as other great instructors, while enjoying the Sunshine State. I have a special place in my heart for Tampa, as I taught both the full “Selling Basics” and “Beyond the Basics” courses there last time we visited.  I made a lot of new friends then, and I hope to this time, too. I'm always looking forward to providing a fun and educational experience for new eBay sellers, as well as those looking to grow their existing eBay businesses.

Our one-day program is only $59, and includes the opportunity to network and learn from other sellers. You can even bring a friend for free if you register before 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on February 23rd.  See our course page for a description of the classes, and for more information about eBay University.

I hope to see you in Tampa!

Sincerely,

Jason

***A Message from Kristin Cunningham – eBay Giving Works Welcomes Its 10,000th Nonprofit***

February 20, 2007 | 05:01PM PST/PT

Kristin Cunningham
Hi everyone, I'm Kristin Cunningham with eBay Giving Works, our dedicated program for charity listings. Since launching in November 2003, eBay Giving Works has enabled nonprofits to raise funds online while letting buyers and sellers support the causes that are most important to them. Now, just over three years later, we've hit an amazing mark in our journey. This weekend, we welcomed the 10,000th nonprofit to register with the eBay Giving Works program!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the eBay Foundation will be giving a gift of $2,500 to the 10,000th eBay Giving Works nonprofit participant - The Lollipop Theater Network. This donation will support the organization in their mission to help hospitalized and chronically ill children by bringing the magic of movies to their bedside.

We're thrilled that there are now 10,000 organizations in the nonprofit directory who are raising funds on eBay Giving Works. Sellers and buyers have more choices than ever when selecting a nonprofit they'd like their sales to benefit.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation for those of you who are buying and selling on eBay Giving Works to support the causes you care about. Your generosity is changing the world, one listing at a time!

Sincerely,

Kristin Cunningham
eBay Giving Works

***PowerSeller Update: Sales on Half.com Now Count Towards PowerSeller Status***

February 15, 2007 | 11:59AM PST/PT

Edurne Jorda
Amy Skeeters-Behrens
Hi everyone, I'm Edurne Jorda in Seller Development, here with Amy Skeeters-Behrens from our Half.com team. We’re making an important change to the PowerSeller program that we're pleased to tell you about – now your sales on Half.com will count towards your PowerSeller eligibility.

Sellers, get credit for Half.com Sales going back to November!
Many sellers list on both eBay.com and Half.com. Now every sale you make on Half.com will take you closer to qualifying for the PowerSeller program. What's more, all sales on Half.com since November 2006 will be taken into account when determining your PowerSeller eligibility.

An average minimum of $1,000 in sales per month, for 3 consecutive months, satisfies the sales requirement for the bronze PowerSeller tier. Please click here to learn about the other requirements. Sellers who meet all the requirements for the PowerSeller program will receive an invitation later this month within My Messages.

This is a great opportunity for eBay to reward sellers across both platforms. Joining the PowerSeller program gives you access to a host of benefits, including:

  • Prioritized customer service - PowerSellers receive prioritized support by email or telephone, depending on sales level.
  • More buyer confidence - The PowerSeller icon will appear next to your user ID in your listings and on your About Me pages.
  • Networking - PowerSellers share selling strategies on an exclusive, PowerSeller-only discussion board.
  • PowerSeller templates - Get PowerSeller letterhead and business card templates to use in customer communications.
  • Newsletters - Receive monthly PowerUp! email newsletter and quarterly PowerUp! print newsletter.

Check out Half.com at www.half.com, and click here to learn more about the PowerSeller program.

Sincerely,

Edurne Jorda
