***Updated: More Search Expansions***

August 31, 2005 | 10:24AM PST/PT

Earlier this year we started introducing search expansions to new areas of the site to help buyers more easily find the items they’re interested in. The results from these additions have been positive for both buyers and sellers, so we have increased the number of search expansions on the site. Our original announcement with more information about search expansions can be found directly below.

Please see our information page to see which search terms are affected by these expansions. We’ll continue to update this page as we add more expansions in the future.

***Original: Coming Soon: More Search Expansions***

March 14, 2005 | 03:36PM PST/PT

Late last year, we added search expansions in several Business & Industrial categories to help buyers find more of the items they're interested in. Starting this week, we’re going to add more expansions to other areas of the site, gradually increasing over the next few months.

What Are Search Expansions?
Many buyers who aren’t as familiar with searching on eBay will often type in a general description of what they are looking for into the search box (for instance, action figure). When this happens, the results they get are often only a portion of the relevant listings, because many of them will not have action figure in the title.

With search expansions, when someone uses the search box to find a particular type of item, we’ll display those listings that have the keyword in the title as usual, but we’ll also show all items in a relevant category that we’ve mapped to the keyword. So, for instance, in our example the search results would show all items with action figure in the title, as well as all items in the Action Figures category. Or, if the buyer types in Superman action figure, we’ll show all listings with Superman action figure in the title, as well as all listings with Superman in the title that are in the Action Figures category.

If you don’t want to have the expanded results shown, simply use quotation marks around any single keyword in your search terms (for example: “Superman” action figure). To let us know your thoughts on these changes, please join us on the Search Board by clicking here.

***Coming Soon: Shipping Column Automatically Shown On Listings Pages***

August 30, 2005 | 02:25PM PST/PT

Leigh Goldstein
Leigh Goldstein

Hi, this is Leigh Goldstein from eBay's Shipping team. I'm back to update you on a project we talked about at eBay Live! 2005. As Bill Cobb has said, one of eBay's top priorities is to make shipping on eBay easier for both buyers and sellers.

Because we know that many buyers don't like to click into a listing only to find that the shipping costs are too high, we'll soon show the shipping costs for each listing automatically on all search results and listings pages (you currently have to choose to have these displayed). This should save buyers time by helping them get a more accurate idea of the price of a listing before clicking into it. If you would prefer not to see the shipping costs on these pages, you can opt-out by using the Customize Display link near the top of the search results and listings pages.

Just as it works today, if you as a seller enter in a flat-rate shipping amount for your listing through an eBay listing tool, the amount will be displayed in this shipping column. If you use the eBay Shipping Calculator, a “Calculate” link will be displayed. And if you offer more than one shipping option, the first one you listed will be displayed.

Please note that at first, these shipping costs will only be displayed to U.S. buyers. Later this fall we will launch a second phase of this project that will display international shipping costs to international buyers.

Sincerely,

Leigh Goldstein,
Senior Manager, Shipping Product Marketing

***Freight Calculator to be Included in the Sell Your Item Form***

August 30, 2005 | 09:59AM PST/PT

This week we will add the Freight Calculator directly into the Sell Your Item (SYI) form. This will make it easier for sellers listing heavy equipment to provide an accurate shipping price to buyers.

You will be able to add the Freight Calculator to your listing from the Shipping Details section of the SYI form. Quotes will be provided from our partner Freightquote.com, who has negotiated rates with many of the nation’s top freight carriers. The Freight Calculator will be located near the bottom of your listing, and buyers will be able to enter their location and other information to get a shipping quote.

For more information about the Freight Calculator, please see Freightquote.com’s information page.

***Coming Soon: Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information for Digital Camera Lenses***

August 22, 2005 | 02:04PM PST/PT

In mid to late September, we will be introducing Item Specifics and Catalog Pre-Filled Item Information in the Lenses category within Cameras & Photo > Lenses & Filters > Digital Camera Lenses & Film Camera Lenses. Item Specifics is an eBay feature that allows sellers to provide additional item details during the selling process. Buyers can then search using these item details, in addition to regular Title search and Description Search, thus finding these items more quickly and easily.

Pre-Filled Item Information is an additional feature for sellers to easily add product information such as brand, model, and compatibility to their listing, along with a stock photo. Item Specifics are set automatically for listings using Pre-Filled Item Information.

If you list items through an eBay seller tool (e.g. Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister, Selling Manager) or the eBay API, Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information will be available in the next few weeks. If you utilize a 3rd party listing service (e.g., Andale, Marketworks, etc.), please contact them to verify that they will offer the Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information functionality in the above category.

We also encourage your to check out our Pre-Filled Item Information page for more information and Seller Central for details on upcoming changes to Item Specifics. If you have any comments or suggestions about these changes to Item Specifics, please email them to vik@ebay.com and they will be considered for future enhancements.

***Coming Soon: Cross-Promotion Connections***

August 22, 2005 | 01:55PM PST/PT

In the next few days, we will introduce a new, optional feature that allows you to connect with other eBay sellers to cross-promote each other’s items. With the Cross-Promotion Connections feature, you can request a connection with any seller you know and trust, and have full control over whether to accept any requests sent to you.

Once a buyer makes a purchase from you, they will first see promotions for your other items in places such as the Bid or BIN Confirmation page and the closed item page as they do today. And now, in a separate section, they will also see up to 5 items from sellers you have added to your connection network. This separate section will only display if you have added other eBay sellers to your connection network.

You can manage which sellers you are connected to, how their items are selected, and end a connection at any time within the My Account section of My eBay. If you don’t want to receive any requests from other members, you can opt-out within your Preferences in My eBay.

To learn more about Cross-Promotion Connections, please see our Help page and tutorial.

***Coming Soon: eBay Motors to Extend Item Specifics to ATV and Snowmobiles Categories***

August 12, 2005 | 02:43PM PST/PT

In late-August, eBay Motors will introduce Item Specifics in the ATV and Snowmobiles categories. Item Specifics will be available for sellers first and then for buyers about a week later. Using Item Specifics is free and optional.

For sellers, Item Specifics make it easier to present a clean, well-organized description that clearly articulates important details. For example, a seller using Item Specifics can easily call out the make, type, year, engine size, color, and several other key attributes of the ATV or snowmobile.

If you list items using the standard Sell Your Item form or Selling Manager Pro, Item Specifics will simply show up in the normal listing flow when they are available. If you list your items using Turbo Lister, Seller Assistant, or Seller Assistant Pro, you will need to download an update once the Item Specifics are available. Finally, if you utilize a 3rd party listing service (e.g., CARad), please contact them to verify that they will offer the Item Specifics functionality for the ATV and Snowmobile categories.

We have started two threads on the Motorcycle Boulevard discussion board to provide more detail about the upcoming changes. To access the ATVs thread please click here. To access the Snowmobiles thread click here. If you have any comments or feedback about Item Specifics in these categories, please email them to motorcycles@ebay.com with Item Specifics in the header and they will be considered for future enhancements.

***Identity Protection – Introducing New Educational Resources to Help You Stay Safe Online***

August 01, 2005 | 02:18PM PST/PT

Dave Steer
Dave Steer

Hi…I'm Dave Steer, and I work on Trust and Safety for PayPal. My team's responsibility is to educate the Community about the ways they can stay safe when buying and selling online.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. At PayPal, one of our goals is to enable the Community to stay safe by providing tools, technology and resources to help prevent identity theft, as well as raise awareness of what to do if someone steals your identity.

To that end, we are pleased to announce a set of new Identity Theft Protection educational resources on PayPal aimed at helping you protect your identity.

The new pages feature helpful tips, including:

  • A printable checklist of steps that everyone should take to help prevent identity theft.
  • A guide for determining how to spot a spoof (fake) email or Web site.
  • Recommended tools for protection from fraudulent emails and Web sites. These tools include SafetyBar, a free downloadable toolbar for Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express that blocks spoof and spam messages from hitting your Inbox, and eBay Toolbar with Account Guard.

We encourage all eBay and PayPal users to review these new resources. As a reminder, we want to highlight the following safety tips:

  • If you are suspicious about an email that claims to be from eBay or PayPal, and requests payment or other account information, report it by forwarding the email to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.
  • Do not click on links in emails that ask for your personal information.
  • Keep your operating system, web browser, and virus detection software up to date.

Please join eBay and PayPal for an online workshop on how to protect your identity on Thursday, August 4th at 11:00 PDT. We look forward to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Dave Steer
Senior Manager, Trust and Safety, PayPal
