***Updated: More Search Expansions*** |
August 31, 2005 | 10:24AM PST/PT

Earlier this year we started introducing search expansions to new areas of the site to help buyers more easily find the items they’re interested in. The results from these additions have been positive for both buyers and sellers, so we have increased the number of search expansions on the site. Our original announcement with more information about search expansions can be found directly below.
Please see our information page to see which search terms are affected by these expansions. We’ll continue to update this page as we add more expansions in the future.

Coming Soon: More Search Expansions*** |
 March 14, 2005 | 03:36PM PST/PT

Late last year, we added search expansions in several Business & Industrial categories to help buyers find more of the items they're interested in. Starting this week, we’re going to add more expansions to other areas of the site, gradually increasing over the next few months.
What Are Search Expansions?
Many buyers who aren’t as familiar with searching on eBay will often type in a general description of what they are looking for into the search box (for instance, action figure). When this happens, the results they get are often only a portion of the relevant listings, because many of them will not have action figure in the title.
With search expansions, when someone uses the search box to find a particular type of item, we’ll display those listings that have the keyword in the title as usual, but we’ll also show all items in a relevant category that we’ve mapped to the keyword. So, for instance, in our example the search results would show all items with action figure in the title, as well as all items in the Action Figures category. Or, if the buyer types in Superman action figure, we’ll show all listings with Superman action figure in the title, as well as all listings with Superman in the title that are in the Action Figures category.
If you don’t want to have the expanded results shown, simply use quotation marks around any single keyword in your search terms (for example: “Superman” action figure). To let us know your thoughts on these changes, please join us on the Search Board by clicking here.

***Coming Soon: Shipping Column Automatically Shown On Listings Pages*** |
August 30, 2005 | 02:25PM PST/PT

Leigh Goldstein
Hi, this is Leigh Goldstein from eBay's Shipping team. I'm back to update you on a project we talked about at eBay Live! 2005. As Bill Cobb has said, one of eBay's top priorities is to make shipping on eBay easier for both buyers and sellers.
Because we know that many buyers don't like to click into a listing only to find that the shipping costs are too high, we'll soon show the shipping costs for each listing automatically on all search results and listings pages (you currently have to choose to have these displayed). This should save buyers time by helping them get a more accurate idea of the price of a listing before clicking into it. If you would prefer not to see the shipping costs on these pages, you can opt-out by using the Customize Display link near the top of the search results and listings pages.
Just as it works today, if you as a seller enter in a flat-rate shipping amount for your listing through an eBay listing tool, the amount will be displayed in this shipping column. If you use the eBay Shipping Calculator, a “Calculate” link will be displayed. And if you offer more than one shipping option, the first one you listed will be displayed.
Please note that at first, these shipping costs will only be displayed to U.S. buyers. Later this fall we will launch a second phase of this project that will display international shipping costs to international buyers.
Sincerely,
Leigh Goldstein,
Senior Manager, Shipping Product Marketing

Have you ever met an eBay "Pink"? Join us Tuesday, August 23rd on the discussion boards, as a number of eBay staff members, also known as "Pinks", from several eBay departments will be participating in discussions on a variety of boards throughout the day.
We also invite you to join us for a couple of special Pinks Day events:

How well do you know the eBay site? eBay Staff will ask questions relating to the areas of eBay they work in, and the first member to answer each question correctly will receive a prize! Visit the Pinks Game thread to find out more.
The thread will be open for posting in the morning and the game will continue throughout the day as different staff arrive to ask their questions!
- Welcome new Pinks in The Park
Some eBay staff will be posting for the first time, or are still pretty new
to posting, so we've created a thread where they can introduce themselves
to the Community - and you can introduce yourself to the Pinks!
Please stop by, say hello, and tell us about yourself on the Welcome New
Pinks thread on the Park Discussion Board.
To find the discussions that staff are taking part in, look for the little

***Coming Soon: Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information for Digital Camera Lenses*** |
August 22, 2005 | 02:04PM PST/PT

In mid to late September, we will be introducing Item Specifics and Catalog Pre-Filled Item Information in the Lenses category within Cameras & Photo > Lenses & Filters > Digital Camera Lenses & Film Camera Lenses. Item Specifics is an eBay feature that allows sellers to provide additional item details during the selling process. Buyers can then search using these item details, in addition to regular Title search and Description Search, thus finding these items more quickly and easily.
Pre-Filled Item Information is an additional feature for sellers to easily add product information such as brand, model, and compatibility to their listing, along with a stock photo. Item Specifics are set automatically for listings using Pre-Filled Item Information.
If you list items through an eBay seller tool (e.g. Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister, Selling Manager) or the eBay API, Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information will be available in the next few weeks. If you utilize a 3rd party listing service (e.g., Andale, Marketworks, etc.), please contact them to verify that they will offer the Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information functionality in the above category.
We also encourage your to check out our Pre-Filled Item Information page for more information and Seller Central for details on upcoming changes to Item Specifics. ***Coming Soon: Cross-Promotion Connections*** |
August 22, 2005 | 01:55PM PST/PT

In the next few days, we will introduce a new, optional feature that allows you to connect with other eBay sellers to cross-promote each other’s items. With the Cross-Promotion Connections feature, you can request a connection with any seller you know and trust, and have full control over whether to accept any requests sent to you.
Once a buyer makes a purchase from you, they will first see promotions for your other items in places such as the Bid or BIN Confirmation page and the closed item page as they do today. And now, in a separate section, they will also see up to 5 items from sellers you have added to your connection network. This separate section will only display if you have added other eBay sellers to your connection network.
You can manage which sellers you are connected to, how their items are selected, and end a connection at any time within the My Account section of My eBay. If you don’t want to receive any requests from other members, you can opt-out within your Preferences in My eBay.
To learn more about Cross-Promotion Connections, please see our Help page and tutorial.

In mid-August, we will be introducing a new Auto-Fill feature within the Cell Phones > Accessories, Parts category. ***Coming Soon: Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information for the MP3 Players Category*** |
August 05, 2005 | 05:17PM PST/PT

Toward the end of August, we will be introducing Item Specifics and Pre-Filled Item Information in the MP3 Players category within Consumer Electronics > Portable Audio. Item Specifics is an eBay feature that allows sellers to provide additional item details during the selling process. Buyers can then search using these item details, in addition to regular Title search and Description Search, thus finding these items more quickly and easily. Pre-Filled Item Information is an additional feature for sellers to easily add product information such as brand, model, storage capacity, and color to their listing, along with a stock photo that may be used in the listing.
If you have any comments or feedback about the Item Specifics, please email them to portable_electronics@ebay.com and they will be considered for future enhancements.
