***eBay Stores upgrade; News about searching*** |
 |
 |
 |
24 April, 2009 | 14:32

eBay Stores upgrade: final reminder to check your Store!
eBay Stores has always been a great way for sellers to create their own brands on eBay. With new storefront templates and enhanced search results, the new eBay Stores format is even better—both for Stores sellers and their customers.
Most Stores sellers have chosen to upgrade and are currently benefitting from the new format and over the next two weeks, we will be upgrading the rest of eBay Stores automatically. If you haven’t already done so, it’s important that you preview your Store and opt-in beforehand. Just go to My eBay and click “Manage My Store” in the Account menu.
For most Stores, the transition is seamless and requires no modification by the seller. If your Store has been significantly customized, you may need to make some changes. So be sure to check now, before the automatic upgrade begins.
For more details, please see our frequently asked questions.
Older search technology retiring at the end of April
Almost all eBay buyers and sellers are now using eBay’s new search technology. We previously announced the older technology would be retired in April of this year.
If you’re still using the older pages, we encourage you to give the new search a try—even if you tried it before (just click the “Try it now” link at the top the search page). Since it was first introduced, we received some great comments and suggestions, and we’ve used your feedback to make it even better:
- Results are returned faster than ever.
- You see more of the items you want.
- You can now customize your preferences for the left side of the page.
- Window shopping in the snapshot view makes shopping even more fun.
- “Related searches” and “exclude in category” searches are back!
We’ll continue to make the new search better, faster, and easier to use with more innovative ways to find what you’re looking for.
Sincerely,
The Finding and Stores Teams

***A Message to Sellers from Stephanie Tilenius: Spring 2009 Update*** |
 |
 |
 |
14 April, 2009 | 13:00

| Stephanie Tilenius |
On behalf of eBay, let me open with two words: Thank you. We appreciate your business and the opportunity to strengthen our partnership with you. Together we can do what’s necessary to bring buyers to eBay and keep them coming back.
We also recognize the impact that major changes to eBay can have on your business. For that reason, we are grouping those changes into two or three major releases per year, with at least 60 days advance notice.
In 2009, there will be 2 significant releases. This post announces the first release, coming the week of June 15. The second release will be announced this summer and will go live in the early fall.
Here’s an overview of the changes launching the week of June 15. This release focuses on driving more sales and improving seller efficiency. Note there are no fee changes in this release.
The spring release is set up to deliver three things for our sellers:
1. Easier, more visual shopping to drive more sales
- New item page rolling out. New photo zoom coming later this year. Get your listings ready now.
- New eBay product pages surfacing to more buyers. To make sure your items show up on these pages, use product details (formerly called pre-filled item information).
- New way to list in Fixed Price lets you offer all variations of one product—e.g. colour and size—in a single low-cost listing.
2. Key information to set buyer expectations and help reduce your costs
- New Smart FAQ answers buyers’ top 20 questions before they contact you.
- Package tracking links available from My eBay—print labels on PayPal and tracking links show up automatically, or you can upload the information.
- Return policy and handling time required for new listings and re-listings beginning June 15. Deadline for updating your Good ‘Til Cancelled listings extended to mid-September.
- Use Item Specifics. Now in some categories, you can customize when the available choices don’t apply to your item.
- Category and Item Specifics changes now consolidated with the rest of updates—find out if your listings are impacted.
3. Other updates to make selling on eBay more efficient
- Selling Manager FREE for all sellers.
- Bulk editing tools available now.
Get more details on all these updates.
Cheques and money orders no longer allowed
As part of our ongoing commitment to improve the customer experience on eBay.ca, we will be moving to an electronic checkout process that’s faster and more consistent for sellers and buyers. As part of this move, cheques and money orders will no longer be allowed on eBay.ca. By moving to a paperless payment system that is more consistent with the rest of the ecommerce landscape, Canadian buyers and sellers will have access to the same payment safeguards and enhanced checkout experience that can be found on eBay.com. Find out more here.
Finally, I’d like to invite you to talk with members of my staff during the next two days on a special discussion board on eBay.com we’ve set up for this purpose.
Again, thank you for partnering to make eBay a successful marketplace. We believe these changes will improve your sales and the efficiency of selling on eBay.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Tilenius

 |
 |
 |
30 March, 2009 | 15:12

| Garnor Morantes |
Hi everyone...This is Garnor Morantes, and I help manage our Online Forums. As many of you know firsthand, eBay’s Discussion Boards have been an important part of the eBay experience for many years. With many forums on all kinds of subjects – from Selling on eBay to the social Canada Town Square --- our forums help members connect with others for business and for fun.
Thousands of members participate in our discussion boards every day. If you haven’t visited already, we encourage you to browse and see what they have to offer – and if you see a discussion that interests you, add your own thoughts or tips.
Coming soon – A new look, plus some cool new features
This week, we’ll be upgrading the discussion boards to offer several new features, along with a new look that is more “eBay.” Here are the highlights:
- More Personalization and Layout Options. In addition to showing My World profile images, we’re providing tools that will allow you to quickly access those discussion topics that are most important to you.
- Time-saving Features. Hover over a discussion thread title and catch a glimpse of the conversation that’s taking place before you decide to click into the thread. We’ll also rotate through some discussion board posts at the bottom of certain pages that let you see what people are currently talking about.
- Enhanced Control Over Your Experience. Sort from newest to oldest, change the number of threads appearing on a board hub page, or automatically “quote” an earlier post. The upgrade provides more ways you can tailor your experience, so that you get what you need fast.
CA Discussion Boards Unavailable from 4 p.m. to Midnight PT on Tuesday, March 31st
In order to add these new upgrades, eBay Discussion Boards will be taken offline on Tuesday, March 31st, from approximately 4 p.m. Pacific time (1 p.m. ET) to midnight Pacific time (9 p.m. ET). Once we’re back online, I hope you’ll go in and check out all the new features.
Sincerely,

***News for sellers in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games*** |
 |
 |
 |
13 March, 2009 | 11:26

| Dinesh Lathi |
From now through the end of 2009, pay only 5¢ Insertion Fees when you list books, music, movies, and video games on eBay.ca in Fixed Price with product details. Your listings will show up on both the new eBay product pages and in search results. That’s double exposure for just 5¢. Plus, get Subtitle free with Fixed Price and Auction-style listings in these categories when you list with product details.
We’re extending this promotion as part of our commitment to make eBay a top destination for books, music, movies and DVDs and video games. The goal: give today’s buyers the deals and selection they demand, and give sellers the pricing and exposure they need to succeed.
Also in May, we will be launching an all-out consumer marketing campaign to bring buyers in these categories to eBay—and to your listings.
Find out the best practices for getting more exposure for your listings in these categories—and check out the article on eBay ink..
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

Double discounts for free shipping extended through June
The response from buyers and sellers continues to be fantastic, so we’re extending the promotional incentives we introduced last October through the end of June for sellers who offer free shipping:
- PowerSellers: Get double Final Value Fee discounts on all Fixed Price and Auction-style items with free shipping sold through June 30, 2009.
- All sellers: Get a free Subtitle upgrade on Auction-style and Fixed Price items listed with free shipping through June 30, 2009.
Get your eBay invoice in a new summary format
Starting this month, you can choose to get your eBay invoice in a new easy-to-read summary format or in the current detailed format.
The new summary invoice gives you an at-a-glance look at your billing activity instead of detailing individual transactions. This format includes total amounts for each type of discount, credit or fee.
Plus, you can now have your billing-related emails sent to a separate email address.
It's easy to get started with these new options. Just go to My eBay to set your preferences and select the invoice format that’s right for you.
Dutch Auction format discontinued
In mid May, we will discontinue Dutch Auctions, a little-used listing format in which sellers offer multiple-quantity items for sale in one Auction-style listing. This format – often confusing to both buyers and sellers – comprises only a small fraction of all Auction-style listings on eBay.
If you now list with the Dutch Auction format, you’ll have until mid May to convert those listings to another format, such as single-item Auction-style or multi-quantity Fixed Price. Dutch Auction listings that are live when the format is discontinued will be allowed to run to their conclusion, and Good ‘Til Cancelled Dutch Auctions will reset to a quantity of one when relisted.
Although we are retiring this one particular auction format, I want to emphasize that eBay remains committed to Auction-style listings. We value the format, and will continue to support other forms of Auction-style listings going forward.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

Ads can be bought on either a category or keyword basis and are displayed to targeted buyers on search results pages.
Get started now

***News about searching on eBay*** |

23 February, 2009 | 14:06

| Jeff King |
Hi everyone...This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Last year we introduced new search technology that makes it faster and easier to find just what you’re looking for on eBay. In a nutshell, it looks at a multitude of details in listings to deliver more of the results you want. It makes it easy to browse and narrow your selection, and lets you choose how you want to see the results.
The response from the Community to the new finding has been great—today the vast majority of eBay buyers and sellers are using it. Some of you have sent great ideas for making it even better. We've incorporated a lot of these suggestions already and in the coming months we’ll be introducing more new features and enhancements to make it even faster and easier.
Sellers: Use product details!
For sellers, we’re continuing to expand opportunities to use product details in listings. Be sure to use them--it's one of the best ways to boost your exposure in the new search.
Retiring the older technology
Until now, buyers and sellers have been able to choose not to use the new search engine. With more than 90% of you now on board, we’ll be retiring the older technology in April of 2009. If you are one of the few who’s opted out, you’ll see some reminder messages during your searches.
On behalf of the whole Finding team, thank you for your support and insight.
Sincerely,
Jeff King

***Coming Soon: eBay AdCommerce*** |
 |
 |
 |
18 February, 2009 | 10:05

| Andrea Stairs |
Hi everyone...I'm Andrea Stairs with eBay's Canadian team. I’m excited to announce that in the next few weeks we'll be launching a new program called eBay AdCommerce on eBay.ca.
eBay AdCommerce is a pay-per-click advertising solution that allows eBay sellers to advertise their eBay Stores or specific listings through text ads on eBay search and browse result pages.
AdCommerce is a powerful advertising tool for sellers who want to drive more traffic to their Stores or give more visibility to a specific listing. Ads can be bought on either a category or keyword basis. The ads are shown on search results pages in the advertising section below the search results and are displayed to targeted buyers.
How eBay AdCommerce works
Let's say you want your ad to appear when buyers search for "computer." First you need to register with AdCommerce and then decide how much you’re willing to pay each time a buyer clicks on your ad. If you are one of the highest bidders for the keyword “computer”, your ad – including title, short description, and image - will show up on the search results pages generated when targeted buyers search for “computer”.
With AdCommerce, there is no up-front fee, and no minimum payment or deposit. And, you’re always in control: you decide what you’re willing to pay for each click and you set your maximum budget.
To learn more, please read our eBay AdCommerce information page.
Sincerely,
Andrea Stairs

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi – Update to the Feedback Removal Policy*** |
 |
 |
 |
12 January, 2009 | 10:55

| Dinesh Lathi |
Hello everyone…We hope you enjoyed the holidays. My team and I are looking forward to kicking things off in 2009. I’d like to provide you with a few important selling-related updates and reminders you should be aware of as you prepare your listings for the new year.
Update to Feedback Removal Policy – Customs Fees
Many of our cross-border sellers have asked for help when they receive a negative/neutral Feedback rating because they wouldn’t mark an item as “gift” in order to sidestep customs fees. eBay will now remove Feedback if a) the listing meets the Customs Requirements below and b) the seller receives a negative or neutral Feedback comment which references customs delays or customs fees.
The following text, or very similar wording, must be included in the listing and be:
- In the format below
- In a font size no smaller than the majority of the other text in the item description
- Prominently displayed (in the upper half of the description, free-standing, etc.)
“International Buyers – Please Note:
- Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility.
- Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.”
In addition, sellers may wish to include additional helpful statements for their buyers, such as:
- “These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up – do not confuse them for additional shipping charges.”
- “We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as ‘gifts’ - Canadian and International government regulations prohibit such behaviour.”
To learn more, please read eBay’s Feedback Removal Policy.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***Consumer Product Safety Commission - Children's Items Recalled Week of November 17*** |
 |
 |
 |
21 November, 2008 | 15:45
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall for the following items:
- R&D International recalls Young Colors Children's Hoodies due to strangulation hazard
- IKEA Home Furnishings recalls IRIS and ALVINE Roman Blinds due to strangulation hazard
- Insulated Black-Out Roller Shades recalled by Green Mountain Vista due to strangulation hazard
- Bead Maze Toys recalled by ImagiPLAY due to laceration hazard
eBay takes recalled items very seriously, and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues. We encourage buyers and sellers to visit http://www.cpsc.gov (see the Recent Recalls section) and http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca for more details about the products and model numbers included in this recall. You may also wish to visit our Recalled Items policy at http://pages.ebay.ca/help/policies/recalled.html
For Sellers: Please check your product model numbers and refrain from listing any items that are part of this recall. Any currently listed items that are included in the recall should be ended.
For Buyers: If you believe an item you are interested in bidding on or purchasing may be part of this recall, we encourage you to use the Ask Seller a Question feature to verify.
As a service to our Community, eBay announces some product recalls, like this one, when we believe the marketplace will be impacted. To stay informed about all Health Canada and CPSC recalls, please bookmark http://www.cpsc.gov and http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca and sign up to receive notices on new recalls.

***A Message from Jeff King -- Update on Multiple Identical Listings *** |
 |
 |
 |
19 November, 2008 | 15:44

| Jeff King |
Hi.. This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Starting this week we will be showing all identical listings from the same seller for Fixed Price items in search. Since July 30, we had been showing just one listing to ensure that buyers see relevant items from a variety of trusted sellers.
Now that a track record of recent sales is a factor in the sort order for Fixed Price, most sellers are combining identical items into single, multi-quantity, 30-day listings. This has proven to be the right strategy for sellers and a great shopping experience for buyers. Please note that we are continuing to show a maximum of 10 listings per page -- whether Fixed Price or Auction-style -- from any one seller.
To get the best position for Fixed Price listings this holiday season, we encourage sellers to focus on the following:
- Create effective, accurate listings with distinct and descriptive titles.
- Use the long duration (30-day or Good ‘Til Cancelled) multi-quantity format whenever appropriate.
- Offer free shipping.
Sincerely,
Jeff King
Senior Director, Finding

***Update on Canada Revenue Agency request for 2004-2005 PowerSeller Information*** |
 |
 |
 |
13 November, 2008 | 09:00

| Scott Shipman |
As many of you know, in 2007, the Federal Court of Canada upheld the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) request for certain customer information regarding Canadian PowerSellers during the years 2004 and 2005. In defense of our members’ privacy, we vigorously defended that ruling, and a series of appeals has been underway since then.
Unfortunately, on November 7, 2008, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the CRA, and against eBay. Consequently, the court has ordered eBay to provide information on PowerSellers from 2004 and 2005.
We have sent an email to all members whose information must be released to the CRA. Please check your Messages folder in My eBay if you are unsure of whether you are affected by this ruling.
This is not the outcome that we wanted, and we strenuously object to being forced to release our members’ information. Protecting our users' privacy is of the utmost importance.
Please note that the CRA has indicated to us that they will seek court orders for PowerSeller information for subsequent years. Given their intentions, we would like to remind sellers once again that they are responsible for ensuring that they are in compliance with all laws and regulations relating to their activities online. A change in PowerSeller status at this time will not alter our information disclosure requirements.
The court rulings, additional information and the answers to some commonly-asked questions are posted at www.ebay.ca/powersellerinfo. If you have additional questions about this situation, you may email powersellerinfo@ebay.ca.
We appreciate that this matter is of great concern to our members and continue to work hard to protect your privacy.
Yours sincerely,
Scott Shipman

***A Message from John Canfield – Two Important Security Updates*** |
 |
 |
 |
30 October, 2008 | 10:46

| John Canfield |
Hi everyone…this is John Canfield, Senior Director for Fraud Prevention Policy. I have two important updates on security initiatives to share with you.
Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation -- Progress Update
Trusted selling with identity confirmation, which we first announced in April, is designed to prevent fraudsters from gaining access to members’ accounts in order to commit fraud on eBay. It adds a new level of security by asking anyone listing an item from an “unknown” computer to confirm their identity.
Last spring, we began to implement this project by noting which computers members typically use when they buy and sell on eBay. Then two months ago, we started testing the identity confirmation process for a small population of users. I’m pleased to let you know that our testing has been successful – we’ve seen a significant reduction in account takeovers, and it’s been a smooth experience for users. We are now expanding this initiative to the entire Community, which should be completed within the next few weeks.
Going forward, if you list from a different computer than you usually use (e.g., a computer at a friend’s house, at the library, etc.), eBay will make an automated call to you to confirm it’s really you attempting to list an item. If you are not available to receive a call, you can instead confirm your identity via Live Chat with our customer support team.
Making Winning Bidder IDs Anonymous
Early last year, we began to anonymize bidder IDs on listings. This change was designed to protect bidders from fake Second Chance Offers and other malicious emails. As I’ve shared before, this initiative has been very successful, resulting in a 90% reduction in this type of fraud.
Today, however, the winning bidder’s ID is currently visible to everyone after the listing ends, and this continues to lead to fake checkout offers and other spam. Consequently, it also leads to unpaid items, as winning bidders who fall victim to these fake emails often send payment to someone other than the seller.
Based on the positive results we’ve seen by anonymizing bidder User IDs, as well as our commitment to protecting all bidders from becoming targets for fraudsters, we’ve decided to extend anonymized User IDs to winning bidders, as well. This change will be implemented in the coming weeks.
As always, the following information will still be accessible:
- Sellers will be able to view all bidder IDs on their listings.
- All members can click on the bidder ID and view the bidder’s Bid History page, which will detail the categories in which they’ve bid over the past 30 days.
- Feedback pages will show the same information as now – buyer and seller IDs, with comments visible to all.
Thanks for taking the time to read about these updates to improve safety on eBay, and we thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
John Canfield

***Coming Soon – Introducing Minimum DSR Seller Standards on eBay.ca*** |
 |
 |
 |
23 October, 2008 | 15:49

| Andrew Sloss |
In August, eBay.com announced that it was instituting a new minimum Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) requirement for sellers. This new minimum DSR threshold of 4.1 across all four DSRs applies to any seller who lists on eBay.com, and comes into effect on November 3, 2008. Sellers with a DSR between 4.1 and 4.3 will be allowed to list on eBay.com, but their listings may be subject to demotion in search results.
eBay.ca is instituting its own minimum DSR requirements as a way to further improve customer experience for everyone on eBay. Beginning November 17, 2008, sellers listing on eBay.ca will need at least a 4.1 on each of their DSRs over the prior 30-day or 12-month period, depending on volume, in order to list on the site.
Today, only a small fraction of sellers fall below eBay.ca’s minimum seller standards, yet they are responsible for a high percentage of customer complaints, which hurts you and our marketplace overall.
Please note: In November, items listed on eBay.ca from Canadian sellers whose DSRs meet the 4.1 threshold will appear on eBay.com (provided they meet all other criteria to list on the US site, such as offering at least one approved payment method). However, we strongly urge sellers whose DSRs are between 4.1 and 4.3 to strive to achieve an average of 4.3 in order to avoid being demoted in search results. Please use this time to adjust your business models and/or work on improving your DSR scores.
Sincerely,
Andrew Sloss

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: New Look for Product Pages, Plus Other Important Updates*** |
 |
 |
 |
17 October, 2008 | 10:17

| Dinesh Lathi |
Hello everyone...This is Dinesh Lathi, VP of Selling Experience. As we head into the busy holiday shopping season, I’d like to let you know about a few important changes we’ve made to help sellers be successful this season:
New Look for eBay’s Product Pages
In the next few days, we’re making some important design updates to eBay’s product pages (i.e., the pages you see when you click on “Matching Products” in search results.) You’ll see two different versions of this page—one style is for Books, Music, Movies & DVDs, and Video Games and one is for products in other categories. Sellers’ items will appear on these pages when they list with pre-filled item information).
Both new pages make it faster and easier for buyers to find just what they’re looking for from sellers they trust. Get a closer look at the new pages, along with tips for getting the best position for your listings.
Special Offer Now On for Media Listings
From now through the end of the year you’ll get a FREE Subtitle upgrade when you list books, music, movies, DVDs and video games with pre-filled item information. Subtitles show up on the new product pages, so take advantage of this offer to help your listings stand out.
Introducing Featured First, a New Listing Upgrade
We’re also introducing a new listing upgrade called Featured First. Add Featured First to your listings for an opportunity to appear in the featured area at the top of the first page of search results. A limited number of Featured First listings are randomly selected to be rotated into the featured area, so there’s no guarantee yours will appear. But this upgrade is still a great way to significantly boost your chances of being displayed on the first page for increased visibility and increased likelihood of a sale. It’s also a great way to jump start “recent sales” for a new Fixed Price listing.
Featured First takes the place of Gallery Featured and is offered for the same price: $24.95 for up to 10 days, and $74.95 for up to 30 days. This upgrade is available only to sellers who have not been demoted in Best Match search results (see your seller dashboard for your status). Also note Featured First is not available for any Motors categories. Gallery Featured is still available for Motors sellers.
Relist Credits Ending for Fixed Price Listings October 22
As you know, we recently reduced Insertion Fees for Fixed Price listings to just 35 cents for a full 30 days, and just 15 cents in Books, Music, Movies & DVDs, and Video Games. As a result, starting October 22 we will no longer be offering Insertion Fees credits when Fixed Price items are relisted. Credits will still be issued for unpaid items and are now being extended to single quantity Store Inventory Format listings if there is an unpaid item. Note relist credits for Auction-style listings will continue.
Thanks for taking the time to read about these updates, and we thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

Title and Description Search is not displaying all items correctly. Please be assured that we are working aggressively to resolve the issue, and expect it to be fixed by the end of next week. We know how frustrating this is, and sincerely apologize that the fix will take so long, but the reindexing necessary to complete the fix literally takes several days to run.
If you are a seller and your item is not displaying in a Title and Description Search, please don't hesitate to contact Customer Support, and they will be happy to refund your fees upon validation that your item is impacted by this bug.
If you are a buyer, these items are always available by using Title-only Search (simply uncheck the Include title and description box when running a search). Additionally, if you have Favourite Searches set up, you may want to temporarily modify them to search by Title only.

***A Message from Brian Burke: Feedback Revision Launches Soon*** |
 |
 |
 |
10 October, 2008 | 13:58

| Brian Burke |
Hi… I'm Brian Burke, Director for Global Feedback Policy. I’m pleased to announce we will introduce Feedback Revision the week of October 20.
Feedback Revision will enable buyers to change a Feedback rating, comment and Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs). While the Feedback revision process is initiated by a seller, buyers have the option to accept or decline a request. Buyers will have 10 days to respond, and non-response will result in the Feedback remaining. Only one request can be made per transaction.
Sellers should only send a Feedback Revision request to the buyer once they have addressed, to the buyer’s satisfaction, the cause for the negative or neutral Feedback. They may also send a request if the buyer accidently left incorrect Feedback in the first place.
Sellers will have a limit of five requests per 1,000 Feedback earned within a 12-month period. On average, sellers receive eight negative Feedbacks per 1,000 Feedback earned, so the five per 1,000 limit will enable sellers to address the occasional mistake, while at the same time not enable sellers with greater than average negative Feedback to "cleanse their record."
We will monitor system use and make adjustments as required.
Onsite Buyer Messaging about “Free Shipping” During the Feedback flow
Free shipping is a great way for sellers to improve their DSRs and attract more buyers. To enhance the accuracy of Feedback left on these transactions, beginning next week buyers will be reminded that the seller offered free shipping on the transaction as they are leaving Feedback for the seller.
I’d also like to let you know that in July, we introduced messaging to remind buyers when their transaction was an international transaction.
Since Feedback is often left days or even weeks after payment is made, providing these reminders should increase the accuracy of buyer Feedback and help ensure sellers who do cross-border business or who offer free shipping receive appropriate DSRs for Shipping time and Shipping & Handling cost.
Sincerely,
Brian Burke
Director, Global Feedback Policy

***A Message from Nate Etter: Update on Mandatory Return Policy and Handling Time*** |
 |
 |
 |
09 October, 2008 | 10:47

| Nathan Etter |
Hi everyone...Good news for sellers who are in the process of updating their listings to prepare for the holiday season. We had previously announced that specifying both your Return Policy and Handling Time would be made mandatory in late October. However, given the breadth of changes we’re asking sellers to make to their listings this year, we’re giving sellers a reprieve on these two items until after the holiday season.
The new enforcement date for mandatory Return Policy and Handling Time will be in early 2009. To give sellers adequate time to get their listings ready, we’ll be giving sellers at least 30 days notice before we start enforcement.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to clear up a couple of questions around Return Policy.
Do I have to accept returns?
We encourage you to accept returns, as this increases buyer satisfaction. However, you do not have to accept returns. You may specify “No Returns Accepted” as your return policy.
If I specified Returns Accepted before the new fields were added, do I need to revise my listings again?
No, if you specified Returns Accepted before the new fields were added, you do not need to revise your listings again. The new field, which specifies who pays return shipping, will be defaulted to Buyer.
Even though we’re pushing out the enforcement date, it’s never too early to add Return Policy and Handling Time to your listings. We encourage you to start listing your items with Return Policy and Handling Time now.
Sincerely,
Nate Etter

***A Message from Jeff King: Update on the New Search Experience*** |
 |
 |
 |
07 October, 2008 | 13:40

| Jeff King |
Hello...This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. 2008 is flying by, and we're making great progress with our new search experience. About five percent of Canadian members have been using it for some time now, and we've also made much of the functionality available to anyone who wants to try it out on the eBay Playground.
Since the experience was first released, members have given us some great feedback, much of which we've acted on. For example, user preferences now are "sticky" – basically, the system remembers them – and we've added more features to the advanced search page. We'll continue to incorporate members’ suggestions and feedback whenever possible into the experience.
Defaulting users to the new search experience
We've started directing everyone to the new search experience by default. If you're using the new search experience, I'd like to thank you in advance for taking the time to let us know your thoughts.
And as I mentioned before, if you're not already using them, you can still try the latest Finding features on the eBay Playground – new additions are made all the time. You can also stop by and leave your feedback on the Search discussion board on eBay.com, which my team regularly monitors.
Sincerely,
Jeff King

Priority Worldwide is being sold in Canada through Canada Post's retail and commercial networks. New rates and improved service standards apply to the Priority Worldwide service.
How Priority™ Worldwide will work on eBay
With the launch of Priority Worldwide and removal of Purolator International on September 29, we are introducing a few changes to the International Shipping section in the eBay.ca selling flow.
Changes for new listings (on or after September 29) include:
- For Flat Shipping, Priority Worldwide will replace Purolator International as a Canada Post service option in the Services drop down box;
- For Calculated Shipping, Priority Worldwide will replace Purolator International as a Canada Post service option in the Services drop down box.
Changes for live listings offering Purolator International (listed prior to September 29 and ending on or after September 29) include:
- Replacing of Purolator International with the new Priority Worldwide service;
- Displaying of a different rate (the correct one for the new Priority Worldwide service) for listings with Calculated shipping;
- Changing the service to Priority Worldwide (from Purolator International) for listings with Flat Shipping, but the flat shipping amount specified will not change e.g. if you specified a flat rate of $20 for Purolator International, it will now be displayed as $20 for Priority Worldwide.
Note: While the Priority Worldwide service starts on September 29, changes to the eBay selling flow will not be live on the eBay.ca site until mid-October.
Priority Worldwide offers an on-time money-back guarantee and delivery standards of next business day by noon to most USA destinations and 2 to 3 business days to other destinations around the globe. Other key features of Priority Worldwide include detailed tracking, delivery confirmation, signature and electronic customs clearance.
Three packaging options are available to meet your shipping needs (visit your local Post Office for supplies):
- No charge envelope (maximum 500g);
- No charge Pak (maximum 1.5 kg);
- Use your own packaging (up to 30 kg depending on destination).
Visit your local Post Office beginning September 29 for more information.
Sincerely,
Ira Grossman
Senior Manager, Shipping
™ Trade-mark of Canada Post Corporation
* Delivery standards are in business days between major urban centres. Some restrictions apply. See the Priority Worldwide terms and conditions for details.

***Update on Shipping Limits for Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games categories*** |
 |
 |
 |
29 September, 2008 | 17:03

| Ira Grossman |
Hi everyone...This is Ira Grossman from eBay's Shipping team. As previously announced by Dinesh Lathi, starting on October 5, sellers who list in the Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games categories on eBay.com will need to ensure their first flat rate “domestic” US shipping service is below the maximum shipping costs set for those categories.
Alternatively, sellers may:
- List on eBay.ca, using flat rate or calculated shipping, or
- List on eBay.com using calculated shipping. (Note: The eBay.com shipping calculator only supports shipments originating in the US.)
The maximum shipping and handling charges for the selected categories can be found in the Maximum Shipping and Handling table. For further details on shipping limits, visit the FAQs.
How Shipping Limits affect sellers who list on eBay.ca
While Canadian sellers are not subject to the shipping limits when listing on eBay.ca, we recognize there will be a competitive impact for Canadian listings appearing in the US marketplace. Since the cost of shipping from Canada is substantially higher than shipping domestically within the US, sellers charging actual shipping costs from Canada using either flat rate or calculated shipping may be negatively impacted in Best Match sort or Total Cost sort on eBay.com as a result of the higher shipping costs. We encourage Canadian sellers to consider strategies to lower their stated shipping costs, or even offer free shipping to the US, if, for example, they can successfully shift some of the cost of shipping into their item price and still remain competitive.
- Starting later in October, sellers who list in the Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games categories on eBay.ca will see an informational message in the International Shipping section of the Describe Your Item page on eBay.ca indicating that a shipping cap exists on eBay.com for that particular category.
As an example, if I’m a seller listing a DVD on eBay.com, the maximum shipping cost is $3. If you are listing a similar item on eBay.ca, we encourage you to list the DVD with a shipping cost of no more than $3 to the US in an effort to compete with .com sellers, as well as to improve your visibility in search results.
Sincerely,
Ira Grossman
Senior Manager, Shipping

***A Message from Dinesh Lathi: New Pricing for Fixed Price Listings Takes Effect at Midnight, Plus Other Reminders*** |
 |
 |
 |
15 September, 2008 | 18:24

| Dinesh Lathi |
Hi everyone. I’m here with a reminder that the new pricing structure for Fixed Price listings, as announced by Lorrie on August 20, goes into effect at midnight Eastern time tonight. That means that sellers will be able to start taking advantage of the new 30-day duration for Fixed Price listings for the new low Insertion Fees of 35 cents, and just 15 cents in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games.
Also starting at midnight, and good through the end of the year, our special holiday promotion goes into effect for Books, Movies & DVDs, Music, and Video Games: Fixed Price Insertion Fees are just 5 cents when you use Pre-filled Item Information (see details here).
If you haven’t already, please make sure you’ve reviewed all of the information pages we’ve provided to learn more about the other changes being introduced. Please note that although many of these changes are only currently being introduced on eBay.com (and not eBay.ca), it’s important that Canadian sellers understand the impact these changes may have on their sales.
In addition, check out the Seller Checklist, which will help you stay on top of when various policies and features will take effect, and provide updates on the availability of tools for bulk-editing your listings. A few key upcoming dates:
- Starting October 1 and through the end of the year, sellers will get a free Subtitle listing upgrade, and eligible PowerSellers will get double their Final Value Fee discounts for items sold with free shipping.
- Include at least one domestic shipping option within the new maximum shipping charges. (This is mandatory by October 5, 2008 if you list on eBay.com in Books, Movies & DVDs, Music and Video Games, and recommended for listings made on eBay.ca to remain competitive on both shipping and in search standing.)
- On October 20, remove cheques and money orders from “Payment Details” if listing on eBay.com. If you list on eBay.ca, make sure to offer at least one of the US approved payment methods to secure exposure to US buyers.
- Also by late October, you’ll need to specify your handling time and return policy in your listings.
You can read an overview and more details about all the changes we announced on August 20 here.
Sincerely,
Dinesh Lathi

***Bid Assistant To Be Removed*** |
 |
 |
 |
15 September, 2008 | 16:01

| Henri Huch |
Hi everyone, I'm Henri Huch from eBay’s Buyer Experience team. As part of our ongoing efforts to simplify the site and remove features that have very low usage, we’re going to remove the Bid Assistant tool (which allowed you to bid on multiple similar items in succession) in the next few weeks.
The Removal Plan
Starting the week of September 22, the links to Bid Assistant will be removed from item pages and from My eBay, and buyers will no longer be able to create new groups of items within the tool. If you’ve used the Bid Assistant tool recently, or do so before September 22, here’s how you’ll be affected:
- If you have an active Bid Assistant group as of September 22: You will still see the link to Bid Assistant in My eBay, and will be able to view your groups of items within the tool. The Bid Assistant tool will also continue to bid on the items within each group as scheduled. However, you will not be able to add or remove items from a group, or alter your maximum bids. Because these groups will essentially “lock” on September 22, make sure that you don’t want to change anything within your Bid Assistant groups prior to that day.
- If you have a closed Bid Assistant group as of September 22: You’ll still be able to view your closed groups via the link in My eBay.
The Bid Assistant tool will then be removed from the site entirely in mid-October.
Sincerely,
Henri Huch

***Trading Advisory: Hurricane Ike*** |
 |

15 September, 2008 | 13:36
Hurricane Ike has affected many communities, especially in the Gulf Coast areas of Texas and Louisiana, disrupting power, communication and transportation lines. ***Impact of US ‘Specified Shipping' Policies on Canadian Sellers*** |
 |
 |
 |
10 September, 2008 | 11:53

| Ira Grossman |
Hi everyone...Ira Grossman here from eBay’s Shipping team. As previously announced in the US, sellers listing on eBay.com must now specify a shipping cost for US buyers. This is also true for Canadian sellers listing on eBay.com, even if their item is located in Canada.
Sellers listing on eBay.ca are not required to specify shipping costs at this time, but we do recommend specifying shipping details for Canadian buyers, US buyers, and buyers in any other country you are willing to ship to, using eBay's shipping tools. Listings without specified shipping tend to attract fewer buyers, risk being down-sorted in Best Match and Total Cost sort on eBay.com, and tend to receive lower detailed seller ratings.
We will continue to keep you posted on how Canadian sellers are impacted as any new US policies roll out in the coming months.
Sincerely,
Ira Grossman

***SYI Form: Category and Catalogue Search Made Easier*** |

Hi everyone… this is Guenter Wiesinger from the Seller Experience team. We're making a few minor look-and-feel changes to the Sell Your Item (SYI) form, to help make the listing process a bit easier:
Making it easier to find a suitable category for your item
Previously, while trying to pick a suitable category for listing your item, you would see a list of options with the top-level categories often repeated in the list. Starting this week, we're organizing category choices under top-level categories, so you can select the right one(s) for your item.
Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.
|
|
|
Now, grouping
choices under top-level categories (right)
makes category selection easier than before (left).
|
Cleaner layout for product search results
Previously, when you entered your item keywords to match with eBay's catalogue, you would see a long list of choices organized in alphabetical order. You would sometimes have to scroll down a long way down the page to find your item.
In a few weeks, in some categories we will organize the display of catalogue items in order of popularity on eBay, so that the majority of sellers will find it easier to match their items quickly. We'll also display catalogue choices in two columns, to reduce scrolling down the page.
Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.
|
|
|
Before (left):
Catalogue choices shown alphabetically. After (right): Choices
shown by popularity on eBay and in two columns to reduce scrolling.
|
We'll also be making a few more similar changes to the layout of SYI in the upcoming weeks. I'll be back soon to update you.
Sincerely,
Guenter Wiesinger

***A Message from Lorrie Norrington: New Pricing, More incentives, and other changes to bring more buyers*** |
 |
 |
 |
20 August, 2008 | 09:57

| Lorrie Norrington |
Hi everyone. As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, I want to let you know about some bold changes we’re making on eBay to lower your up-front costs and help you to sell more efficiently. Combined with the improvements we’re rolling out to deliver a more consistent shopping experience this fall, buyers will see more bargains than ever, and keep coming back to eBay to buy from you.
Listing Fixed Price items is more affordable than ever
We understand you have a lot of choices when it comes to selling online. That’s why we’re changing our pricing to reduce your up-front cost to sell and align with your success. Starting September 16, we are lowering the listing fee for all items sold via the Fixed Price format to only 35 cents, and a special rate of only 5 cents through the end of the year for Buy It Now™ Fixed Price listings in the Media categories (Books, Video Games, Music and DVDs & Movies) using pre-filled item information. (See our new Fixed Price fee structure here.)
Accordingly, we are shifting the majority of our costs for most categories to the back end (Final Value Fees), which you only pay if you’re successful in selling an item. In extremely competitive e-commerce categories such as Electronics, Cameras, and Computers, we’re decreasing Final Value Fees. This means we’re giving you an even bigger incentive to list these types of items on eBay.
In addition to the pricing change, we’re extending the listing duration of all Buy It Now™ Fixed Price listings to 30 days, up from seven with an option for automatic renewal. For sellers whose items that may take longer to sell, this change will be a huge cost reduction and time saver. Taken together, these two big changes – 35 cents for up to 30 days – represent a 70 percent reduction in listing fees on Fixed Price items.
As for Auction-style listings, we’ve decided not to make any changes. We believe this format is already a good deal, especially when you list with a low start price. Auctions will always have a place on eBay – they are a proven way for sellers to get the best value for their unique items, and they continue to receive significant exposure in search as they are sorted primarily based on time ending soonest.
So that’s the big news: 35 cents for 30 days. We’re virtually eliminating the up-front cost to list an item at fixed price on eBay. And this is not a promotion - we are serious about making eBay the most competitive marketplace online.
The changes we’re making in pricing also mean great things for buyers. As more merchandise comes onto the site, we’re applying our search technology in a way that will make their shopping easier, faster and safer. Essentially, buyers will see the most relevant, best priced inventory from our most trusted sellers – all of which allows them to buy with confidence. And when buyers find and buy what they want for a good price, you win.
Free Shipping incentives in all categories
Shipping is an important factor for buyers as they shop online – and expectations are higher than ever. Today, buyers want free or reasonable shipping.
Beginning on October 1, 2008 and running through the end of the year, all sellers will receive the option to use Subtitle for free, worth $0.50 per listing, when free shipping is offered. And for eligible PowerSellers, you will receive double your PowerSeller Final Value Fee discount on these items, starting on the same date and running through the end of the year when you offer free shipping - this is up to a 40 percent discount! As always, items with free shipping will get a boost in Best Match search results. See more detail on Free Shipping incentives.
eBay.com changes that will affect Canadian sellers
Along with the pricing changes, eBay.com is introducing some key policy changes. These changes will not be happening on eBay.ca at the same time, but will still have an impact on most Canadian sellers' businesses. I urge you to read about these changes and determine how you may need to adjust your own listings accordingly.
Safer, more consistent checkout: Starting this fall, eBay.com is moving to an electronic checkout process that's faster and more reliable for sellers and buyers. As part of this move, cheques and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com, although buyers can still use these payment methods for item pick-up, at the seller's discretion. In addition, the electronic payment methods will be fully integrated into eBay Checkout. For example, if a seller has an Internet merchant account, a buyer will be able to directly enter a credit card and never have to leave the site.
eBay.ca also plans to move to all electronic payments in 2009. Until that process can be completed, sellers listing on eBay.ca can continue to accept cheques and money orders. However, you will need to offer one of the accepted payment methods for eBay.com in order for your item to appear to US buyers. (See more information on paperless payments.)
Updated Seller Standards - Minimum DSRs: eBay.com is instituting a new minimum Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) requirement, as a way to further improve the customer experience for everyone on eBay. As of November 1, 2008, sellers will need at least a 4.3 across all four DSR categories, over the prior 30 day or 12 month period depending on volume, in order to list on eBay.com. eBay.ca is not implementing a similar threshold at this time, but may do so in the future. Please be aware, however, that Canadian sellers who list on eBay.com will be required to adhere to these new standards.
Today, only a small fraction of sellers fall below the 4.3 threshold, yet they are responsible for a high percentage of customer complaints, which hurts you and our marketplace overall. One negative experience with a seller is all it takes for a buyer to take his or her business elsewhere. We're urging all sellers whose scores fall below the 4.3 threshold to use the next two months to adjust their business models and/or work on improving their DSR scores.
Shipping charge limits in Media: eBay.com is also introducing limits on shipping and handling charges in one of our biggest and most competitive categories, Media (Books, DVDs & Movies, Music, and Video Games).
This means that Media sellers on eBay.com will need to offer at least one US shipping option within the specified limit. With this move, we're also ensuring that buyers encounter fewer excessive shipping charges, which is the number one reason they leave the site.
Again, shipping charge limits are not being implemented at the same time on eBay.ca; however, you will be required to abide by these limits if you are listing on eBay.com. If you list in these categories on eBay.ca, it's very important that you become familiar with the limits and adjust your shipping and pricing strategies to stay as competitive as possible with US sellers.

***Starting This Week - Item Page Testing*** |
 |
 |
 |
14 August, 2008 | 14:10

| Subha Shetty |
Hi everyone...At eBay Live! (read my earlier announcement), we had the opportunity to collect a lot of valuable input on our redesigned item page from attendees. As a result, we've made two significant changes to what we presented in June:
- The redesigned item page Description section will be flex width, not fixed. We heard from third-party developers and sellers that our original plan to require a fixed width for the description area of the item page would cause too much disruption to listing templates. We've modified our design, so now the top section will be fixed width, but the lower Description section will fluctuate in width (as it does today) to accommodate the various types of listing templates our sellers use.
- Preview your item in the new item page. Sellers need to be able to see how their items will appear in the new page being tested, so they can make adjustments as necessary. As a seller, if you have an item listed, simply sign in and click the new preview link at the top of your listing to view the item as it would appear in the new design.
Testing plans
We're starting another two-month testing cycle. Starting this week, a very small percentage of members will be randomly selected to see one of several new page variants that we're testing. This means not everyone in our test will see the same designs or features.
Remember this is only a test! If you are randomly selected to try the new item page temporarily, we appreciate your support and patience. We'll be back with more information on our results and future plans in a few weeks.
I'd also like to let you know about a new feature we're testing:
- New merchandising module with seller opt-out. As part of the new test cycle, some of the variants will include a merchandising "module." The placement of this module will vary; some variants include merchandising along the right side of the page, while other variants display this module across the bottom. In keeping with trends and shopping expectations on the Internet, these designs offer buyers more selection, while offering our sellers more exposure. Items merchandised will include relevant listings from the same seller or other sellers.
Sellers who do not wish to have other sellers' items appear on their item page can opt-out via preferences in My eBay. Keep in mind that by opting out, your items will no longer appear on other seller's pages, limiting exposure to buyers.
To learn more about the redesigned item page, please read our Frequently Asked Questions. My team and I will also be answering questions in this Auction Listings forum discussion. And please stay tuned for more information about the redesigned item page on our General Announcements board.
Sincerely,
Subha Shetty

***A Message from Rob Chesney - eBay Canada Motors Fee Changes*** |
 |
 |
 |
13 August, 2008 | 15:23

| Rob Chesney |
Hello everyone…this is Rob Chesney, Vice President of eBay Motors. I'd like to share some news regarding fee changes that we're making to the eBay Canada Motors marketplace.
Effective September 2, 2008, we're removing the Insertion Fees for your first four vehicle Auction or Fixed Price listings and increasing the Transaction Services Fee. Here are the details:
- Starting on September 2, 2008, all members will qualify for FREE Insertion Fees on their first four vehicle listings.
- The Transaction Services Fee for the first four vehicles will be $125 (C$ or US$). This fee is only charged at the time of the first bid on your listing (or if you set a reserve price, at the time of the first bid over that reserve), if a buyer purchases the item with Buy It Now, if you accept a Best Offer from a buyer, or if a buyer accepts a Second Chance Offer.
- Once a seller has listed more than four vehicles in a 12-month period, they will be charged a $20 (C$ or US$) Insertion Fee (for each subsequent listing) and a $100 (C$ or US$) Transaction Services Fee. (For all sellers, the first 12-month period is from September 2, 2008 to September 1, 2009.)
These fee changes apply to listings in the Cars & Trucks, Boats, and Other Vehicles categories. Vehicles listed in the Motorcycles and Powersports categories follow a similar structure, but with slightly lower fees.
We're excited to make these changes, and believe they will enhance the vehicles marketplace on eBay Canada for everyone.
I encourage you to click here for full pricing details.
Sincerely,
Rob Chesney
Vice President, eBay Motors

***A Message from Brian Burke: Update on Feedback Percentage*** |

 |
 |
13 August, 2008 | 12:44

| Brian Burke |
Hi everyone… this is Brian Burke, Director Global Feedback Policy. Last month, Lorrie Norrington announced that we would be recalculating Feedback percentages without neutrals. Neutrals, whether left in the past, or those you might receive in the future, will no longer be counted as part of the Positive Feedback percentage.
The recalculation is scheduled to take effect next week on August 19th, before the next PowerSeller eligibility deadline. So, neutrals will not impact PowerSeller eligibility for August.
I’ll update you next week when this change is complete.

Brian Burke

***DSRs and Seller Dashboard Weekend Issues - RESOLVED*** |
 |
 |
 |
11 August, 2008 | 09:57
From Thursday 8/7 through Saturday 8/9, 30-day DSR averages were incorrect. As a result, we temporarily removed the Seller Dashboard so the incorrect information was not displayed. The problem has been resolved - the 30-day DSR averages are now displaying correctly, all feedback has been recalculated, and we have restored the Seller Dashboard.
On Saturday, we also removed the trust factors (DSRs; buyer satisfaction rating; and shipping cost, including free shipping) from the Best Match algorithm so sellers were not promoted or demoted unfairly. This will remain in place for the rest of the week (at least) so items listed during this time will continue to be weighted equally with other items until they end naturally. Additionally, PowerSeller discounts will be based on the corrected DSR scores, so no seller will lose his or her discount as a result of this issue. It was paramount to us that our sellers were not harmed by this technical problem.
Finally, and just as importantly, we want to thank our Community for your patience during this issue. We apologize for the frustration and confusion this caused you, and are grateful for your support.
Regards,
eBay

***A Message from Jeff King -- Identical Items and Finding Updates*** |
 |
 |
 |
01 August, 2008 | 13:56

| Jeff King |
Hello…This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Trust & Safety's John McDonald introduced a number of updates to our listing policies that our sellers have appreciated. (Read his announcement from May 19.) Two changes that he announced have the potential to save considerable time and cost for our sellers:
- The removal of the Choice policy gets rid of the restriction that has required sellers to list individual listings for each size, color or configuration of the same item.
- The removal of the Multiple Listings Limit policy ends the 15-item rule that has governed how many identical listings a seller can have listed at the same time.
As John also mentioned, these policy changes go hand in hand with changes to our Finding experience. In a nutshell, now our Finding technology can do the work of removing duplicates from search results, ensuring buyers have a good finding experience with plenty of variety and that sellers can list in whatever quantities and configuration that make the most sense to their business.
Starting this week, the display of multiple identical items from the same seller will be limited to one in Search results. An item is considered identical if it has the same title and the same listing format, and the listing chosen for display will be determined by the sort option that the buyer chooses. We will be rolling this out to all sort options by next week. When multiple auction-style listings with the same title have a different number of bids and different prices, these are no long considered identical and will all be displayed.
Also, the number of unique listings (listings for different items) per seller will be up to ten per page. In a case where a seller has a number of items-for instance 20-that could potentially show up in the same search results, 10 will be shown on the first page, and the other 10 will be on the second page. (These improvements go hand in hand with the removal of the Multiple Listings Limit policy.)
As a reminder, our new Search & Browse Manipulation policy prohibits sellers from "gaming" the system to trick the system into displaying their identical items. For more information, please read the Frequently Asked Questions on this topic.
Added flexibility for sellers, added variety for buyers
Now sellers are free to list identical listings in whatever volume is right for their business, because our technology will ensure buyers are not overwhelmed by an over-abundance of identical items. For larger sellers, this reduces the operational complexity of ensuring only a certain number of similar items are active at one time. For smaller sellers, these changes preserve a fair climate that allows them visibility in search results.
This improvement showcases the breadth of attractive inventory from a variety of sellers, making it easy for buyers to find what they are looking for - which in turn benefits sellers with more sales.
Get your questions answered from the Finding team
My team and I want to help answer your questions about these and other Finding changes. It's our goal to make sure you have the best experience possible as we gradually transition to the new Finding technology. Please visit our thread on the Search board on eBay.com to ask us your questions.
Sincerely,
Jeff King

***Coming Soon: Changes to Item Specifics in Jewellery & Watches, Books, DVD & Movies, Music and Video Games*** |
 |
 |
 |
01 August, 2008 | 13:56
We plan the following Item Specifics changes in August:
- Updates to DVD & Movies Item Specifics values
- In particular media areas, we will introduce Condition values "Brand New", "Like New", "Very Good", "Good" and "Acceptable" in place of the current values "New" and "Used". The categories affected are:
- Books: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Cookbooks, Children's Books, Textbooks and Audiobooks
- DVD & Movies: DVD HD-DVD & Blu-ray, VHS, VHS Non-US (PAL), UMD and Other Formats
- Music: CDs, Cassettes
- Video Games: Games
These changes won't affect items currently listed on the site. However, during the relist or revise process, items that currently have their Condition as "New" will be defaulted to the "Brand New" value and items with the condition "Used" will be defaulted to "Acceptable". Sellers may of course change the Condition value for their item at any point after these changes are introduced. Condition will also be defaulted to "Acceptable" on new listings if the seller has not selected a condition value.
- In Jewellery, eBay Item Specifics will be attached to the upcoming new Fine Jewellery categories:
- Fine Bracelets
- Fine Earrings
- Fine Necklaces & Pendants
- Fine Rings
- Jewelry Condition will add "Used" to the existing "New" value.
If you list items manually through an eBay seller tool (for example, the Sell Your Item form or Turbo Lister) or the eBay API, the updated Item Specifics will be available in the next few weeks. If you use a third party listing service (such as ChannelAdvisor), please contact them to verify when they will update these Item Specifics.
For general information about Item Specifics and how to use them, please visit our Item Specifics overview page. If you have any comments or feedback about Item Specifics, please email them to taxonomy@ebay.com and they will be considered for future enhancements.

***A Message from John Canfield: Update on our Fraud Prevention Efforts*** |
 |
 |
 |
30 July, 2008 | 17:21

| John Canfield |
Hi everyone…this is John Canfield, Senior Director of eBay's Trust & Safety team. Over the last couple years, we've introduced a lot of change in the marketplace that has helped us make significant progress in our overall Fraud Prevention efforts. Some of you were able to attend my presentation at eBay Live! in June and heard my updates on these efforts. But for those of you who weren't there, I wanted to take a moment to put all the initiatives I highlighted at eBay Live! into context.
We built our strategy around three distinct layers of protection:
Preventing fraudulent accounts. Our first priority is to stop fraudsters from being able to operate on the site in the first place. Stronger verification of new sellers allows us to know our sellers better and makes it harder for fraudsters to open new accounts. Anti-phishing efforts, including our alliance with Yahoo! and recent announcement with Google, block phishing e-mails before they arrive in users' inboxes. Finally, trusted selling with identity confirmation, which will be fully implemented later this summer, prevents account take-overs by requiring anyone attempting to list an item from an "unknown" computer to go through identity confirmation.
Removing fraud visibility. Next, if fraudsters manage to get hold of an account, we make it unlikely that their fraudulent listings will become visible to the Community. We do this in three primary ways.
1) In April 2007, we announced that items most favoured by fraudsters would not be visible in search for a number of hours. During those few hours, our fraud detection algorithms and investigators in our over 2,000-plus Trust & Safety team, work to stop fraudsters and their listings before they ever become visible to the community. In the 15 months since that announcement, we have reduced fraud visibility by over 80%, and we're working to reduce exposure for this type of fraud even further.
Your community reports of potential fraudulent listings help us to identify additional problems, as well as help us to improve our algorithms. We appreciate the many members who contribute their support by reporting suspicious listings to us.
2) In March 2008, we expanded the use of anonymized bidder IDs to all auction-style listings. This project, known as the Safeguarding Member IDs initiative, protects under-bidders from fake (fraudulent) Second Chance Offer requests and other malicious spoof email. As a result of this initiative, fake Second Chance Offer volume has declined by over 90%. We're pleased with these results and the increased protection for our Community that they signify. (For more information, see "Safeguarding User IDs" in Help: Protecting Your Privacy.)
3) In order to further secure our listings against malicious content, we will roll out controls on "active" user-generated content in early 2009 that will provide rich user experience through eBay-approved secure widgets and mark-up language. (Stay tuned for more information from eBay and your Certified Providers on this subject.)
Ensuring safer transactions. Lastly, should fraudsters obtain a fraudulent account and get visibility for their fraudulent listings, we have safeguards in place to thwart them in their attempts to convince buyers to pay using an unsafe payment method. Our Accepted Payments policy requires that new sellers and listings for higher-risk items accept safe electronic payment methods only. (For more details, please read our January 2008 announcement.) Fraudsters can also attempt to use e-mail to coax buyers into unsafe, off-eBay transactions, even before the auction closes. To counter this, we recently announced Safer member-to-member email via anonymous email forwarding, which keeps pre-sale communications safe on eBay and keeps the buyers' e-mail address anonymous and protected. (For details, read our June 2008 announcement.) As a reminder, if you ever suspect that an email you receive isn't legitimate, make sure to forward it to us at spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com.
I hope this helps give you a better sense of how all the safety initiatives fit into our overall strategy -- and I hope that the results I've shared illustrate for you how these efforts are truly making a difference.
On that note, while the Trust & Safety teams here have been working hard to make security and safe transactions as seamless and automatic as possible to our Community, your safe practices play an important role as always. All buyers and sellers should know that paying with PayPal is the number one way to protect yourself against fraud. For additional tips on how to protect yourself from spoof and phishing emails, check out the eBay Security & Resolution Centre, the PayPal Security Centre and take PayPal's Fight Phishing Challenge.
Stay tuned for more news on our progress as the year goes on.
Sincerely,
John Canfield
Senior Director, Trust & Safety

***Consumer Product Safety Commission - Children's Items Recalled the Week of July 21st*** |
 |
 |
 |
24 July, 2008 | 14:46
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall for the following items:
- Bright Starts ring rattles due to a choking hazard
- It’s My Binky’s personalized pacifiers due to a choking hazard
eBay takes recalled items very seriously, and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues.

***Best Match Testing on eBay.ca - Introducing “Item Location”*** |
 |
 |
 |
17 July, 2008 | 16:13

| Andrew Sloss |
Hi everyone...I'm Andrew Sloss, Country Manager. I have some great news about Best Match testing on eBay.ca.
For the last few months, we have been testing Best Match in all categories on eBay.ca in English. (Best Match is the new sort feature that gives buyers another way to organize their search results, helping them more quickly find what they are looking for.)
As we've mentioned in earlier updates, we have been giving higher priority to domestic items in search. Previously, we were limited to promoting items in search that were listed on eBay.ca. Canadian items listed on other sites - such as eBay.com - didn't receive the same consideration because of a technology limitation.
Enhancing Domestic Prioritization
I'm pleased to announce that we are now able to give higher priority in search to all Canadian items on eBay.ca - regardless of the site they were originally listed on. (Other criteria, such as price, shipping cost, DSRs and listing ending time, will continue to play a role in our Best Match algorithm. )
We will be testing this new functionality (which we call the "Item Location" factor) in select categories in the weeks ahead, and hope to see the same positive results that we've seen in the earlier phases of testing.
Just a reminder that if you prefer to use a different sort order in these categories (such as "Time: Ending Soonest"), you can change it by using the Sort By drop-down menu at the top of the search results. If you've already set your sort order preference using the "Customize Display" link (found to the right of the "Sort By" drop-down), you won't be affected by this test.
We look forward to sharing future results of our continued testing with you.
Sincerely,
Andrew Sloss
Country Manager

 |
 |
 |
16 July, 2008 | 14:12

| Ira Grossman |
Hi everyone...This is Ira Grossman from eBay's Shipping team. I hope you are having a restful and relaxing summer.
Back in May, we introduced the Canada Post-eBay Flat Rate Box to the eBay Community, with three convenient flat rates for your shipping needs: Regional and National (shipments within Canada) and USA (shipments to the United States).
We also launched the Flat Rate Box with limited time introductory pricing in effect until August 14, 2008. There's less than one month left to take advantage of the following discounted Flat Rate Box rates:
- Regional C$8.99 (10% savings off the regular rate of $9.99)
- National C$11.49 (10% savings off the regular rate of $12.99)
- USA C$15.99 (11% savings off the regular rate of $17.99)
The Flat Rate Box can only be shipped with a Flat Rate Box shipping label created, purchased and printed through eBay/PayPal's label printing tool. The Canada Post shipping label you print through eBay/PayPal already includes the postage; all you have to do is affix the Flat Rate Box shipping label to the Flat Rate Box (in the area indicated on the box) and drop your package at any post office or in any Canada Post street letter box. You can use the Flat Rate Box to ship items weighing up to 5 kg (11 lb).
