***Try Out the New My eBay*** |
 |
 |
 |
28 August, 2008 | 15:37

| Renée VonBergen |
Hi everyone…I’m back with an update on the new My eBay. So far, we’ve had to limit how many members could access the new My eBay, but now we’re ready to invite everyone to come try it! Check it out by clicking on the link at the top of any My eBay page which says, “try the beta.” If you’d like to return to the classic version, simply click the “opt out” link in the upper right corner of the new My eBay pages. You can go back and forth between the classic My eBay and the new My eBay as often as you’d like.
With the new My eBay, you can:
- Organize your My eBay items into lists that you create, such as “research,” “buy soon,” and “gift ideas.” Never before have you been able to organize items in My eBay in a way that is so easily matches your personal preferences.
- Choose from a variety of colours for your Watching, Bidding, Active Selling, and other sections.
- Pick the sections you want to show on your Summary page. Even if you have activity in a particular section, you can collapse it or choose not to see it on your Summary at all if you’d like.
- Get a preview of your five most-recent unread messages.
- Define your own list of My eBay shortcuts that point to your favorite eBay pages, or even to your favorite pages elsewhere on the Internet.
Come try the new My eBay, then stop by the My eBay discussion board (on www.eBay.com) and let us know what you think!
Sincerely,
Renée VonBergen

***SYI Form: Category and Catalogue Search Made Easier*** |
 |
 |
 |
22 August, 2008 | 10:50

| Guenter Wiesinger |
Hi everyone… this is Guenter Wiesinger from the Seller Experience team. We're making a few minor look-and-feel changes to the Sell Your Item (SYI) form, to help make the listing process a bit easier:
Making it easier to find a suitable category for your item
Previously, while trying to pick a suitable category for listing your item, you would see a list of options with the top-level categories often repeated in the list. Starting this week, we're organizing category choices under top-level categories, so you can select the right one(s) for your item.
Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.
|
|
|
Now, grouping
choices under top-level categories (right)
makes category selection easier than before (left).
|
Cleaner layout for product search results
Previously, when you entered your item keywords to match with eBay's catalogue, you would see a long list of choices organized in alphabetical order. You would sometimes have to scroll down a long way down the page to find your item.
In a few weeks, in some categories we will organize the display of catalogue items in order of popularity on eBay, so that the majority of sellers will find it easier to match their items quickly. We'll also display catalogue choices in two columns, to reduce scrolling down the page.
Please see the side-by-side comparison below to get an idea of the changes.
|
|
|
Before (left):
Catalogue choices shown alphabetically. After (right): Choices
shown by popularity on eBay and in two columns to reduce scrolling.
|
We'll also be making a few more similar changes to the layout of SYI in the upcoming weeks. I'll be back soon to update you.
Sincerely,
Guenter Wiesinger

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall for the following items:
- Fisher-Price Learning Pots and Pans recalled due to choking hazard
eBay takes recalled items very seriously, and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues. We encourage buyers and sellers to visit http://www.cpsc.gov (see the Recent Recalls section) and http://www.healthycanadians.gc.ca for more details about the products and model numbers included in this recall. You may also wish to visit our Recalled Items policy at http://pages.ebay.ca/help/policies/recalled.html
For Sellers: Please check your product model numbers and refrain from listing any items that are part of this recall. Any currently listed items that are included in the recall should be ended.
For Buyers: If you believe an item you are interested in bidding on or purchasing may be part of this recall, we encourage you to use the Ask Seller a Question feature to verify.
As a service to our Community, eBay announces some product recalls, like this one, when we believe the marketplace will be impacted. ***A Message from Lorrie Norrington: New Pricing, More incentives, and other changes to bring more buyers*** |
 |
 |
 |
20 August, 2008 | 09:57

| Lorrie Norrington |
Hi everyone. As we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, I want to let you know about some bold changes we’re making on eBay to lower your up-front costs and help you to sell more efficiently. Combined with the improvements we’re rolling out to deliver a more consistent shopping experience this fall, buyers will see more bargains than ever, and keep coming back to eBay to buy from you.
Listing Fixed Price items is more affordable than ever
We understand you have a lot of choices when it comes to selling online. That’s why we’re changing our pricing to reduce your up-front cost to sell and align with your success. Starting September 16, we are lowering the listing fee for all items sold via the Fixed Price format to only 35 cents, and a special rate of only 5 cents through the end of the year for Buy It Now™ Fixed Price listings in the Media categories (Books, Video Games, Music and DVDs & Movies) using pre-filled item information. (See our new Fixed Price fee structure here.)
Accordingly, we are shifting the majority of our costs for most categories to the back end (Final Value Fees), which you only pay if you’re successful in selling an item. In extremely competitive e-commerce categories such as Electronics, Cameras, and Computers, we’re decreasing Final Value Fees. This means we’re giving you an even bigger incentive to list these types of items on eBay.
In addition to the pricing change, we’re extending the listing duration of all Buy It Now™ Fixed Price listings to 30 days, up from seven with an option for automatic renewal. For sellers whose items that may take longer to sell, this change will be a huge cost reduction and time saver. Taken together, these two big changes – 35 cents for up to 30 days – represent a 70 percent reduction in listing fees on Fixed Price items.
As for Auction-style listings, we’ve decided not to make any changes. We believe this format is already a good deal, especially when you list with a low start price. Auctions will always have a place on eBay – they are a proven way for sellers to get the best value for their unique items, and they continue to receive significant exposure in search as they are sorted primarily based on time ending soonest.
So that’s the big news: 35 cents for 30 days. We’re virtually eliminating the up-front cost to list an item at fixed price on eBay. And this is not a promotion - we are serious about making eBay the most competitive marketplace online.
The changes we’re making in pricing also mean great things for buyers. As more merchandise comes onto the site, we’re applying our search technology in a way that will make their shopping easier, faster and safer. Essentially, buyers will see the most relevant, best priced inventory from our most trusted sellers – all of which allows them to buy with confidence. And when buyers find and buy what they want for a good price, you win.
Free Shipping incentives in all categories
Shipping is an important factor for buyers as they shop online – and expectations are higher than ever. Today, buyers want free or reasonable shipping.
Beginning on October 1, 2008 and running through the end of the year, all sellers will receive the option to use Subtitle for free, worth $0.50 per listing, when free shipping is offered. And for eligible PowerSellers, you will receive double your PowerSeller Final Value Fee discount on these items, starting on the same date and running through the end of the year when you offer free shipping - this is up to a 40 percent discount! As always, items with free shipping will get a boost in Best Match search results. See more detail on Free Shipping incentives.
eBay.com changes that will affect Canadian sellers
Along with the pricing changes, eBay.com is introducing some key policy changes. These changes will not be happening on eBay.ca at the same time, but will still have an impact on most Canadian sellers' businesses. I urge you to read about these changes and determine how you may need to adjust your own listings accordingly.
Safer, more consistent checkout: Starting this fall, eBay.com is moving to an electronic checkout process that's faster and more reliable for sellers and buyers. As part of this move, cheques and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay.com, although buyers can still use these payment methods for item pick-up, at the seller's discretion. In addition, the electronic payment methods will be fully integrated into eBay Checkout. For example, if a seller has an Internet merchant account, a buyer will be able to directly enter a credit card and never have to leave the site.
eBay.ca also plans to move to all electronic payments in 2009. Until that process can be completed, sellers listing on eBay.ca can continue to accept cheques and money orders. However, you will need to offer one of the accepted payment methods for eBay.com in order for your item to appear to US buyers. (See more information on paperless payments.)
Updated Seller Standards - Minimum DSRs: eBay.com is instituting a new minimum Detailed Seller Rating (DSR) requirement, as a way to further improve the customer experience for everyone on eBay. As of November 1, 2008, sellers will need at least a 4.3 across all four DSR categories, over the prior 30 day or 12 month period depending on volume, in order to list on eBay.com. eBay.ca is not implementing a similar threshold at this time, but may do so in the future. Please be aware, however, that Canadian sellers who list on eBay.com will be required to adhere to these new standards.
Today, only a small fraction of sellers fall below the 4.3 threshold, yet they are responsible for a high percentage of customer complaints, which hurts you and our marketplace overall. One negative experience with a seller is all it takes for a buyer to take his or her business elsewhere. We're urging all sellers whose scores fall below the 4.3 threshold to use the next two months to adjust their business models and/or work on improving their DSR scores.
Shipping charge limits in Media: eBay.com is also introducing limits on shipping and handling charges in one of our biggest and most competitive categories, Media (Books, DVDs & Movies, Music, and Video Games).
This means that Media sellers on eBay.com will need to offer at least one US shipping option within the specified limit. With this move, we're also ensuring that buyers encounter fewer excessive shipping charges, which is the number one reason they leave the site.
Again, shipping charge limits are not being implemented at the same time on eBay.ca; however, you will be required to abide by these limits if you are listing on eBay.com. If you list in these categories on eBay.ca, it's very important that you become familiar with the limits and adjust your shipping and pricing strategies to stay as competitive as possible with US sellers.

***Starting This Week - Item Page Testing*** |
 |
 |
 |
14 August, 2008 | 14:10

| Subha Shetty |
Hi everyone...At eBay Live! (read my earlier announcement), we had the opportunity to collect a lot of valuable input on our redesigned item page from attendees. As a result, we've made two significant changes to what we presented in June:
- The redesigned item page Description section will be flex width, not fixed. We heard from third-party developers and sellers that our original plan to require a fixed width for the description area of the item page would cause too much disruption to listing templates. We've modified our design, so now the top section will be fixed width, but the lower Description section will fluctuate in width (as it does today) to accommodate the various types of listing templates our sellers use.
- Preview your item in the new item page. Sellers need to be able to see how their items will appear in the new page being tested, so they can make adjustments as necessary. As a seller, if you have an item listed, simply sign in and click the new preview link at the top of your listing to view the item as it would appear in the new design.
Testing plans
We're starting another two-month testing cycle. Starting this week, a very small percentage of members will be randomly selected to see one of several new page variants that we're testing. This means not everyone in our test will see the same designs or features.
Remember this is only a test! If you are randomly selected to try the new item page temporarily, we appreciate your support and patience. We'll be back with more information on our results and future plans in a few weeks.
I'd also like to let you know about a new feature we're testing:
- New merchandising module with seller opt-out. As part of the new test cycle, some of the variants will include a merchandising "module." The placement of this module will vary; some variants include merchandising along the right side of the page, while other variants display this module across the bottom. In keeping with trends and shopping expectations on the Internet, these designs offer buyers more selection, while offering our sellers more exposure. Items merchandised will include relevant listings from the same seller or other sellers.
Sellers who do not wish to have other sellers' items appear on their item page can opt-out via preferences in My eBay. Keep in mind that by opting out, your items will no longer appear on other seller's pages, limiting exposure to buyers.
To learn more about the redesigned item page, please read our Frequently Asked Questions. My team and I will also be answering questions in this Auction Listings forum discussion. And please stay tuned for more information about the redesigned item page on our General Announcements board.
Sincerely,
Subha Shetty

***A Message from Rob Chesney - eBay Canada Motors Fee Changes*** |
 |
 |
 |
13 August, 2008 | 15:23

| Rob Chesney |
Hello everyone…this is Rob Chesney, Vice President of eBay Motors. I'd like to share some news regarding fee changes that we're making to the eBay Canada Motors marketplace.
Effective September 2, 2008, we're removing the Insertion Fees for your first four vehicle Auction or Fixed Price listings and increasing the Transaction Services Fee. Here are the details:
- Starting on September 2, 2008, all members will qualify for FREE Insertion Fees on their first four vehicle listings.
- The Transaction Services Fee for the first four vehicles will be $125 (C$ or US$). This fee is only charged at the time of the first bid on your listing (or if you set a reserve price, at the time of the first bid over that reserve), if a buyer purchases the item with Buy It Now, if you accept a Best Offer from a buyer, or if a buyer accepts a Second Chance Offer.
- Once a seller has listed more than four vehicles in a 12-month period, they will be charged a $20 (C$ or US$) Insertion Fee (for each subsequent listing) and a $100 (C$ or US$) Transaction Services Fee. (For all sellers, the first 12-month period is from September 2, 2008 to September 1, 2009.)
These fee changes apply to listings in the Cars & Trucks, Boats, and Other Vehicles categories. Vehicles listed in the Motorcycles and Powersports categories follow a similar structure, but with slightly lower fees.
We're excited to make these changes, and believe they will enhance the vehicles marketplace on eBay Canada for everyone.
I encourage you to click here for full pricing details.
Sincerely,
Rob Chesney
Vice President, eBay Motors

***A Message from Brian Burke: Update on Feedback Percentage*** |

 |
 |
13 August, 2008 | 12:44

| Brian Burke |
Hi everyone… this is Brian Burke, Director Global Feedback Policy. Last month, Lorrie Norrington announced that we would be recalculating Feedback percentages without neutrals. Neutrals, whether left in the past, or those you might receive in the future, will no longer be counted as part of the Positive Feedback percentage.
The recalculation is scheduled to take effect next week on August 19th, before the next PowerSeller eligibility deadline. So, neutrals will not impact PowerSeller eligibility for August.
I’ll update you next week when this change is complete.

Brian Burke

***DSRs and Seller Dashboard Weekend Issues - RESOLVED*** |
 |
 |
 |
11 August, 2008 | 09:57
From Thursday 8/7 through Saturday 8/9, 30-day DSR averages were incorrect. As a result, we temporarily removed the Seller Dashboard so the incorrect information was not displayed. The problem has been resolved - the 30-day DSR averages are now displaying correctly, all feedback has been recalculated, and we have restored the Seller Dashboard.
On Saturday, we also removed the trust factors (DSRs; buyer satisfaction rating; and shipping cost, including free shipping) from the Best Match algorithm so sellers were not promoted or demoted unfairly. This will remain in place for the rest of the week (at least) so items listed during this time will continue to be weighted equally with other items until they end naturally. Additionally, PowerSeller discounts will be based on the corrected DSR scores, so no seller will lose his or her discount as a result of this issue. It was paramount to us that our sellers were not harmed by this technical problem.
Finally, and just as importantly, we want to thank our Community for your patience during this issue. We apologize for the frustration and confusion this caused you, and are grateful for your support.
Regards,
eBay

***A Message from Jeff King -- Identical Items and Finding Updates*** |
 |
 |
 |
01 August, 2008 | 13:56

| Jeff King |
Hello…This is Jeff King, Senior Director of Finding. Trust & Safety's John McDonald introduced a number of updates to our listing policies that our sellers have appreciated. (Read his announcement from May 19.) Two changes that he announced have the potential to save considerable time and cost for our sellers:
- The removal of the Choice policy gets rid of the restriction that has required sellers to list individual listings for each size, color or configuration of the same item.
- The removal of the Multiple Listings Limit policy ends the 15-item rule that has governed how many identical listings a seller can have listed at the same time.
As John also mentioned, these policy changes go hand in hand with changes to our Finding experience. In a nutshell, now our Finding technology can do the work of removing duplicates from search results, ensuring buyers have a good finding experience with plenty of variety and that sellers can list in whatever quantities and configuration that make the most sense to their business.
Starting this week, the display of multiple identical items from the same seller will be limited to one in Search results. An item is considered identical if it has the same title and the same listing format, and the listing chosen for display will be determined by the sort option that the buyer chooses. We will be rolling this out to all sort options by next week. When multiple auction-style listings with the same title have a different number of bids and different prices, these are no long considered identical and will all be displayed.
Also, the number of unique listings (listings for different items) per seller will be up to ten per page. In a case where a seller has a number of items-for instance 20-that could potentially show up in the same search results, 10 will be shown on the first page, and the other 10 will be on the second page. (These improvements go hand in hand with the removal of the Multiple Listings Limit policy.)
As a reminder, our new Search & Browse Manipulation policy prohibits sellers from "gaming" the system to trick the system into displaying their identical items. For more information, please read the Frequently Asked Questions on this topic.
Added flexibility for sellers, added variety for buyers
Now sellers are free to list identical listings in whatever volume is right for their business, because our technology will ensure buyers are not overwhelmed by an over-abundance of identical items. For larger sellers, this reduces the operational complexity of ensuring only a certain number of similar items are active at one time. For smaller sellers, these changes preserve a fair climate that allows them visibility in search results.
This improvement showcases the breadth of attractive inventory from a variety of sellers, making it easy for buyers to find what they are looking for - which in turn benefits sellers with more sales.
Get your questions answered from the Finding team
My team and I want to help answer your questions about these and other Finding changes. It's our goal to make sure you have the best experience possible as we gradually transition to the new Finding technology. Please visit our thread on the Search board on eBay.com to ask us your questions.
Sincerely,
Jeff King

***Coming Soon: Changes to Item Specifics in Jewellery & Watches, Books, DVD & Movies, Music and Video Games*** |
 |
 |
 |
01 August, 2008 | 13:56
We plan the following Item Specifics changes in August:
- Updates to DVD & Movies Item Specifics values
- In particular media areas, we will introduce Condition values "Brand New", "Like New", "Very Good", "Good" and "Acceptable" in place of the current values "New" and "Used". The categories affected are:
- Books: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Cookbooks, Children's Books, Textbooks and Audiobooks
- DVD & Movies: DVD HD-DVD & Blu-ray, VHS, VHS Non-US (PAL), UMD and Other Formats
- Music: CDs, Cassettes
- Video Games: Games
These changes won't affect items currently listed on the site. However, during the relist or revise process, items that currently have their Condition as "New" will be defaulted to the "Brand New" value and items with the condition "Used" will be defaulted to "Acceptable". Sellers may of course change the Condition value for their item at any point after these changes are introduced. Condition will also be defaulted to "Acceptable" on new listings if the seller has not selected a condition value.
- In Jewellery, eBay Item Specifics will be attached to the upcoming new Fine Jewellery categories:
- Fine Bracelets
- Fine Earrings
- Fine Necklaces & Pendants
- Fine Rings
- Jewelry Condition will add "Used" to the existing "New" value.
If you list items manually through an eBay seller tool (for example, the Sell Your Item form or Turbo Lister) or the eBay API, the updated Item Specifics will be available in the next few weeks. If you use a third party listing service (such as ChannelAdvisor), please contact them to verify when they will update these Item Specifics.
For general information about Item Specifics and how to use them, please visit our Item Specifics overview page. If you have any comments or feedback about Item Specifics, please email them to taxonomy@ebay.com and they will be considered for future enhancements.
