We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible.

***Update: Testing Best Match on eBay.ca*** |
 |
 |
 |
28 April, 2008 | 14:16

| Andrew Sloss |
Hi everyone...I’m Andrew Sloss, Country Manager. I wanted to give you an update on the Best Match testing on eBay.ca.
For the last several weeks, we have been testing Best Match in selected categories on eBay.ca in both English and French. (Best Match is the new sort feature that gives buyers another way to organize their search results, helping them more quickly find what they are looking for.)
As many of you have noticed, we are giving higher priority to domestic items in search. Although it’s early days in our testing plan, the initial results have been positive. As a result, we feel comfortable expanding our Best Match test to all categories on eBay.ca.
Just a Reminder
During the test, Best Match will be the default sort for search and browse if your search returns more than 25 items. Searches with 25 or fewer items will be sorted as Time: Ending Soonest.
If you prefer to use a different sort order in these categories (such as "Time: Ending Soonest"), you can change it by using the Sort By drop-down menu at the top of the search results. If you've already set your sort order preference using the "Customize Display" link (found to the right of the “Sort By” drop-down), you won't be affected by this test.
We look forward to sharing future results of our expanded testing with you.
Sincerely,
Andrew Sloss
Country Manager

***A Message from John Canfield – eBay Security News*** |
 |
 |
 |
14 April, 2008 | 13:44

| John Canfield |
Hello…I’m John Canfield, Senior Director for Trust & Safety policy management. My team specializes in working to keep the site safe and protected against fraud. Much of the company’s work around safety happens behind the scenes, but some of our efforts are also public-facing. Masking and protecting our Community’s identities on all bidder IDs on auction-style listings, the PayPal Security Key, our work with Yahoo and other domains to block email from unauthenticated addresses, and encouraging safer payments – each of these address a particular aspect of security and is making a dramatic difference in the overall security and safety of the marketplace and consumers’ confidence in shopping online. Our technologies – those that exist today, as well as those that we are designing for tomorrow – are helping to make the internet safer every day.
I’d like to tell you about a new safety initiative that launches on April 14th.
Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation
One of the ways criminals attempt to defraud people on eBay is by gaining access to member accounts with well-established reputations which they then use to set up listings in that person’s name. They gain this access often through a phishing email that convinces an unsuspecting member to click a link and enter their User ID and password.
To protect the Community against this type of fraud, beginning today, eBay will start noting which computers members typically use to conduct their buying and selling activity. After our data collection phase, sometime in June eBay will begin verifying our sellers when they list an item to ensure they are logging in from the same machines they have successfully used previously – usually a home or business computer.
If you are a seller, and you attempt to list an item from a different computer – for example, from a PC you are borrowing in a hotel or library – eBay will make an automated call to the phone number you have registered with us to confirm it is really you. We may also prompt you to verify your identity in other ways.
Initially, this identity confirmation process will only be applied to selling, although we may be extending this to other high-visibility activity in the future.
Sellers, please update your registered phone numbers
Now more than ever, having a current phone number on file with eBay is vital to the safety of the Community and to your business. A wrong or outdated phone number may delay your ability to list items or respond to your customers, if eBay cannot verify your identity.
Have a cell phone? Registering it could save you time and money
If you carry a mobile phone, we encourage you to add this number as a secondary phone number in your registration details, so that we can reach you when you are away from your business or residence where you normally use your trusted computer. Your mobile phone number will not be shared with other members and will be treated in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Please take a minute to update your contact information.
Online Workshop
Members of the Trust & Safety team will be hosting a workshop about Trusted Selling with Identity Confirmation on May 6. The team will be going over this initiative in more detail and answering member questions. (Please stay tuned for more details on the General Announcement Board.)
There is no single “silver bullet” solution to security, so from time to time, I’ll be back to tell you about new areas of innovation. We strive to make security as automatic and seamless as possible, but there are a few important areas where you can help. By joining together, we can accomplish far more in terms of safety than we can alone. To read more safety tips, please visit our Account Center page.
Sincerely,
John Canfield
Senior Director, eBay Trust & Safety

***Reminder: Safer Payments Requirements Go Into Effect Today*** |
 |
 |
 |
09 April, 2008 | 13:02

| John McDonald |
Hi everyone, I'm John McDonald with the Trust and Safety team. As Jim Ambach, VP of Seller Experience, outlined in his announcement in January, we're making some changes that are intended to make the buying experience on eBay better and safer. As part of this initiative, expanded safer payment requirements are going into effect today.
Since January 2007, all new sellers have been required to offer PayPal or a merchant credit card as a payment option to their buyers. This policy has now been expanded to sellers or items when they meet one or more of the following conditions:
- the seller has higher than 5% buyer dissatisfaction rates
- the seller has less than 100 feedback
- the items are listed in categories with higher rates of buyer complaints, including: Gift Certificates, Video Games, Cell Phones, Computers and Consumer Electronics.
In addition, for a small number of transactions that have a higher risk of buyer dissatisfaction, we may delay the release of funds paid through PayPal. This hold will be placed on only a small percentage of transactions for up to 21 days. Then the funds will be released if there is no dispute. The funds may be released earlier if the buyer leaves positive feedback.
Your payments will not be held if you meet the following requirements:
- you have been an eBay member for six months or more, and
- your total Feedback score is 100 or greater, and
- your buyer dissatisfaction percentage is less than 5%.
Or
- your average DSR is 4.5 or greater and
- you have received 20 or more DSRs in the last 12 months.
I know that there have been questions among our Community about payment holds. Monroe Labouisse, my colleague at PayPal, explains holds in further detail on his post to the PayPal blog page.
Sincerely,
John McDonald

***eBay Motors Vehicle Purchase Protection Increased to $50,000*** |
 |
 |
 |
01 April, 2008 | 15:46

| Rob Chesney |
Hello everyone…this is Rob Chesney, VP of eBay Motors. Our Vehicle Purchase Protection program is the cornerstone of our commitment to deliver a good buying experience on eBay Motors. The peace of mind it provides is one of the many reasons eBay Motors is considered the best place to buy a car online.
Starting today, we’re expanding the coverage offered so that buyers of eligible vehicles will be protected for up to $50,000 against losses associated with misrepresentation and fraud – that’s more than double the coverage we previously provided. In addition, we’re removing the $100 fee, so this coverage will be absolutely free. Finally, we’re extending the Canadian Program to cover more vehicle types, including motorcycles, boats, RVs, and snowmobiles.
Just like before, buyers will automatically be enrolled in the program when they complete the purchase of an eligible vehicle on eBay Motors.
For more details, visit the Vehicle Purchase Protection page.
Sincerely,
Rob Chesney
Vice President, eBay Motors
