***Streamlining buyer communications***

26 November 2009 | 05:23PM EST

A number of changes have recently been made to the functionality of emails on eBay.

These changes have been introduced to make email management faster, easier and more relevant.

The changes made include:

  • Ability to see entire email thread: Whether you’re managing buyer emails in My Messages or in your own email inbox, it’s now faster and easier. You can reply to buyer emails by using “respond” in your email or My Messages, or by clicking the yellow “respond” button within emails from buyers. Either way, the conversations are now “threaded” so you can see the entire history of your email exchanges.
  • Speed and functionality upgrades: My Messages is now faster so you can use it for all communications from eBay and other eBay members. You can now also manage and sort your emails as with any inbox.
  • Streamlined post-transaction emails: Sellers using Selling Manager and Selling Manager Pro will notice a few changes to the automated post-transaction emails including the payment reminder email, buyer successful notification and order confirmation email.

If you use Selling Manager Pro you should take the time to familiarise yourself with these changes and ensure you are not doubling up on automated emails.

For further details about these changes, visit our FAQs page.

Regards,
The eBay team

***Update on weekend search issues***

25 November 2009 | 03:31PM EST

On Sunday eBay fixed a software issue that resulted in intermittent problems with eBay search results. This was an isolated incident and not systemic, hence we were able to correct the problem and resume normal operations. By Monday the site was performing well in stress tests, handling increased activity levels throughout the day.

While we’re confident that the software problem has been fixed and that it won’t reoccur, we deeply regret the impact this disruption had on the eBay community.

We’re working to minimise the impact on sellers and buyers whose transactions were affected. This includes listing fee refunds, protection against negative or neutral buyer feedback as well as detailed seller ratings (DSRs) lower than 5 stars (for sellers with Auction style listings), and vouchers for buyers of Auction items that were impacted by the disruption.

To the eBay community, you have our most sincere apologies for the disruption and inconvenience caused by the software problem. We are committed to continue to provide the best marketplace for sellers and the best deals for buyers.

Sincerely,
The eBay team

***Update on search issues ***

23 November 2009 | 01:15PM EST

Yesterday, Sunday 22 November, we experienced a technical issue that resulted in searches returning either limited or no results. We know this issue may have disrupted your business.

Our priority was to identify and fix the issue as quickly as possible, and restore full search functionality. Our teams worked around the clock in an effort to restore critical search functionality as quickly as possible for sellers and for buyers. We have however, kept some secondary search features temporarily offline, this includes refining search by certain item specifics, such as colour or clothing size. We expect to bring these features online today as part of a phased approach to restore full functionality.

We know this is a really busy time for sellers as you ramp up for the Christmas season. We regret any potential impact that this technical issue may have had. We will continue to monitor site performance and ensure that the issue is fully resolved.

We will now be assessing the economic impact of this issue and will be compensating sellers appropriately. The details for issuing credits for affected listings will be announced in the next few days.

We appreciate your patience and understanding.

Regards,
The eBay team

***Changes to Certified eBay Educator Program***

19 November 2009 | 09:56AM EST

eBay will be making changes to the Certified eBay Educator (CeE) Program, effective immediately. The changes that take effect from 9am today are:

  • If you are already a CeE you can continue to operate under the terms of your existing contract
  • Existing CeEs will not be required to sit their exam every 12 months – refer clause 2.1 (d) of your contract
  • We will no longer be accepting any new entrants into the program

eBay encourages all CeEs to advertise their courses in eBay’s Approved Courses category as this is the primary way the effectiveness of the program can be measured. Questions or comments about the program can be emailed to aucategory@ebay.com.

***eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection program to end 23 November 2009***

04 November 2009 | 10:42AM EST

Over the past year, the number of claims to eBay’s Vehicle Purchase Protection program has decreased as more buyers take a proactive approach to safely buying a car. For the remaining claims that are received annually, it has become economically unviable to continue this insurance program coverage for car purchases. As such, any car purchases made after November 23, 2009 will no longer be covered by the Vehicle Purchase Protection program.

Please see our FAQ page for more details.

All vehicle buyers should take proactive steps to achieve a safe vehicle transaction. A helpful source of tips on purchasing vehicles is found in our buyer checklist. At the very least, eBay encourages buyers to undertake the following two actions when purchasing a vehicle online:

  1. Always inspect the car or have it inspected. A car is a large purchase, and it is best to inspect the vehicle before buying in order to make sure everything is as described. If you can’t get to the car because of time limitation or distance, get somebody else to inspect it for you. A professional inspection can discover mechanical or other issues that may not be visible.

  2. Purchase a vehicle history check. Learn the history of the vehicle by purchasing a report. eBay recommends Veda Auto Reports, but there are other providers. A $20 to $40 report can tell you if the car has any encumbrance or if it was written off.

Regards,
The eBay team
