***Horse flu - restriction on movement of goods***

30 August 2007 | 04:49PM EST

Following the recent confirmation of equine influenza (horse flu) in multiple locations, horse events and movements have been stopped in several areas in an effort to contain the spread of the disease. Information on the NSW Department of Primary Industries website indicates that these movements also impact horse fittings/equipment, horse vehicles/floats and horse bedding.

For more information on equine influenza, and how it may impact any sales or purchases you intend to make on eBay for items that may have come into contact with the disease, visit the NSW Department of Primary Industries website: http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/livestock/horse/influenza or the appropriate website in your state.

***A message from Don Fotsch - new PayPal logo coming soon***

23 August 2007 | 05:13PM EST

Hi, I'm Don Fotsch with PayPal’s Product, User Experience and Design team.

I’m excited to let you know that later this month, PayPal will be introducing a new logo.

Our current logo has served us well over the years. However, based on research and discussions with consumers and merchants throughout the world, we believe the time is right to take an evolutionary step in our look. You’ll see this reflected in a new PayPal logo.

You’ll see the new look on the PayPal and eBay websites in the next few weeks. We are also reaching out to our merchants who accept PayPal to update their checkout buttons. Please note as an eBay seller you will not need to take any steps to update the logo.

Thank you for your support as we continually improve the user experience on PayPal and make it safer and easier to pay and be paid online. I hope you enjoy our fresh new look and I look forward to your continued feedback!

Sincerely,
Don Fotsch

***eBay.com.au launches Custom Item Specifics***

21 August 2007 | 04:13PM EST

For the past several years, sellers have been able to use Item Specifics to describe specific attributes about their items like colour, size, and condition. Item Specifics are a great way to complement your title and description.

We're working on ways to make Item Specifics more versatile. Recently, we launched a limited test of what we call Custom Item Specifics.

About Custom Item Specifics
Custom Item Specifics are a bit like "tags" that you find on other user-generated content websites throughout the internet. Essentially, they allow you to create an attribute and keywords for that attribute. For example, let's say you're listing in the Asian Antiques category. You could create your own Item Specifics that give your buyers important details such as “Country: China”, “Type of Antique : Vase”, “Material : Glass”. This gives you the power to quickly add and display the information that will be most important to your buyers.

Custom Item Specifics are created during the listing process. Depending on your item, we may recommend that you use certain Custom Item Specifics during the listing process, because we've seen them used successfully for similar items in the past. The system will "learn" over time, so the recommendations will get better as more items are listed and sold.

All of these details will then be displayed on the item page where the standard Item Specifics are shown today. Not only will these Custom Item Specifics help you better describe your items, but they'll also be factored in when buyers search by title and description. (Note to sellers: Just make sure you choose keywords that are relevant – all Custom Item Specifics will be subject to our policies around keyword spamming).

Our testing plan
Initially, Custom Item Specifics will be introduced in just a small number of categories. These categories have been chosen because they do not offer Item Specifics currently except "Item Condition." Sellers listing in these categories will be able to create and display their own Item Specifics – including both the attribute and the value.

Custom Item Specifics will be available for sellers listing in selected categories through the Sell Your Item form and through the API. They'll be added to Turbo Lister in a few weeks.

If our test goes well, we'll expand it to more categories in the next few months.

Regards,
The eBay Team

***Consumer Product Safety Commission: Mattel Product Recall***

15 August 2007 | 10:48AM EST

On August 14 2007, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Mattel, issued a recall for various figures such as Batman, Barbie and Tanner, Doggie Day Care and Polly Pocket items due to the risk of magnets detaching from the toys and posing a choking or other hazards. The recall also involves the 'Sarge' die cast car as it poses a lead poisoning hazard.

eBay takes recalled items very seriously and we work closely with the Consumer Product Safety Commission on these issues. We encourage buyers and sellers to visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission for more details about the products and serial numbers included in this recall.

Sellers: Please check your product serial numbers and refrain from listing any items that are part of this recall. Any currently listed items that are included in the recall should be ended.

Buyers: If you believe an item you are interested in bidding on or purchasing may be part of this recall, we encourage you to use the ‘Ask Seller a Question’ feature to verify the serial number.

For additional information Mattel can be contacted on 1800 674 753 (toll free) or visit their website at www.service.mattel.com

***Understanding eBay’s Seller Non-Performance policy***

14 August 2007 | 09:33AM EST

Hello,

As you may know, this year eBay has a strong focus on improving the buyer experience and making eBay the best shopping destination.

While improving functionality on the site is critical, a big part of the buyer experience is in our sellers’ hands.

The vast majority of eBay sellers deliver consistently positive experiences to buyers. However, globally a small minority (just 1%) currently cause 35% of bad buyer experiences. This small minority damages their buyers' experience and indirectly damages the good sellers who benefit from a strong and vibrant eBay marketplace.

To address this minority, we have begun enforcing our Seller Non- Performance policy in stricter ways. Now, sellers who demonstrate high levels of buyer dissatisfaction may be subject to limitations on their selling activity.

Keep in mind, this enforcement only impacts the bottom 1% of sellers who cause 35% of the negative buying experiences on the site. The vast majority of sellers provide great buyer experiences by following these good practices:

  • They accurately represent the condition, size, and quality of the item in the listing.
  • They accept payment for an item at the end of a successful sale.
  • After payment is received, they promptly post the item with appropriate packaging.
  • They communicate with the buyer as needed throughout the transaction.
  • They refund buyers in a timely manner when accepting returns, or if there are problems with the delivery of an item.
Our goal in restricting sellers is to see them resolve their service issues, improve their satisfaction rates, and remain in the marketplace as successful sellers.

To learn more, read our Seller Non-Performance policy and our Frequently Asked Questions.

Sincerely,
The eBay Team

Cool new features

******August Category Structure Changes******

02 August 2007 | 04:15PM EST

As mentioned in an earlier announcement eBay Australia is making a number of changes to its Category Structure in the month of August. Many changes have resulted from Community suggestions and eBay would like to thank all members for suggesting category changes.

These changes are due to go live to site on or around the 13th August.

In order to simplify the finding experience for buyers, and help make listing easier and faster for sellers, eBay Australia is making changes in August to the following categories:

  • Antiques
  • Art
  • Books
  • Coins
  • Collectables
  • Crafts
  • Dolls & Bears
  • DVDs & Movies
  • Music
  • PC & Video Games
  • Pottery & Glass
  • Sports Memorabilia
  • Stamps
  • Toys & Hobbies
  • Lots More

You can see a complete list of changes for each category by visiting our Category Structure Change homepage.

How will this impact sellers?
Recurring listings
Any seller who automatically relists items in any of the above categories using a third party or eBay tool (such as Turbo Lister or Selling Manager Pro) will need to make a bulk edit of listings in mid August to ensure all items are listed within the correct category number.

New listings in these categories from mid August
The Category structure on eBay will automatically be updated in mid August. For Turbo Lister and third party listing tools you will need to download updates after mid August to ensure the category structure reflects this change.

Important note for all sellers
Ensure you use Item Specifics and include appropriate keywords in your titles to help facilitate the relevancy of searches for buyers. Any existing listing will automatically be migrated to the new category structure. Item Specifics will remain a part of the listing process.

How will this impact buyers?
Buyers will be presented with a more logical, simpler and broader category structure to assist with their search and browse processes.

Why are these changes being made?
These changes will assist buyers and sellers by simplifying the processes to list and buy items in these categories. Additionally, for those wishing to purchase and/or sell internationally, the new category structure is linked more closely to the US site. This increases the relevance of product searches internationally.

Regards,
The eBay Team
