***Original: Coming soon: Safe payment requirements for new sellers ***

23 January 2007 | 10:29AM EST

Coming soon we will require sellers who register after 17 January 2007 to offer at least one preferred safe payment method of either PayPal or merchant credit card facilities, in their listings. Other additional payment options which are currently permitted onsite are still permitted.

This requirement will be enforced starting mid March 2007.

Please note this will not affect existing sellers who registered before 17 January 2007.

As described in our Web Smart: Safe Online Shopping Guide, eBay strongly encourages sellers to offer payments through PayPal – it's not only convenient to use but it also offers buyers and sellers industry leading protection against fraud and theft of financial data.

Offline payment methods generally don't offer the same level of protection or convenience as online payments. Nonetheless, they may be appropriate for certain types of transactions and sellers may still use listings to offer valid forms of payment, including bank deposit, personal or bank cheques, money orders or cash on delivery. This new safe payment method requirement will further enhance the safe-trading experience on eBay for the whole community.

For more details, please visit our revised Accepted Payments Policy.

The eBay Team

***A Message from Rob Chestnut – Combating online fraud***

10 April 2007 | 12:04PM EST

Hi, I’m Rob Chestnut, eBay’s Senior Vice President in charge of Global Trust & Safety.

Over the last several months we’ve been working on a number of projects to help improve the safety of the eBay marketplace.

For instance, last spring we introduced certain restrictions to help reduce counterfeits on the site. Earlier this year we implemented a project which safeguarded some member IDs to protect those bidding on high-priced items. We’re also testing Detailed Seller Ratings to help buyers choose sellers who offer the best customer experience.

Early results from these efforts show we’re moving in the right direction. We’re seeing a significant reduction in fake Second Chance Offers, for instance, and fewer reports of potential counterfeit listings.

Of course, as we make changes, criminals also adapt their methods. While I’m pleased with our direction and progress, this is an ongoing effort that requires an aggressive long-term approach, and we're working on educating and communicating with the Community to help address their concerns.

For example, we’ve made significant changes to the Security Centre on the eBay site, presenting vital information on safe online shopping practices in a simple yet informative format.

Reducing fraud
Another security measure we’re taking involves categories with the highest level of fraud-related complaints. In such categories certain listings may not be viewable for several hours before appearing in Search results.

To ensure buyers who browse by category see these items, they will appear in the Newly Listed search results based on when they are made visible in search (as opposed to when they are listed.)

What kinds of listings will be impacted?
Unfortunately, I cannot provide this criteria because it could be used by criminals to work around our efforts. Overall, however, we expect this security measure to impact only a fraction of listings.

I understand that this has an impact on our sellers but will help make eBay a welcoming, safe marketplace for both buyers and sellers.

I appreciate your ongoing support.

Sincerely,

Rob Chestnut
Senior Vice President, Global Trust & Safety

***Original: Retiring Old Turbo Lister ***

05 March 2007 | 03:47PM EST

Last year, we launched the new and improved Turbo Lister.

As of February this year more than 80% of all Turbo Lister listings are through this new version.

Most Turbo Lister users have upgraded to take advantage of new features that can improve your listing efficiency, including in-grid editing, customized grid views and flow editing and creation.

Currently, sellers are able to list using both the Old and New Turbo Lister, however we plan to retire the old Turbo Lister by the first week of April, after which you will not be able to upload your listings using the old Turbo Lister.

The data in your old Turbo Lister will not be impacted.

We encourage you to Download the new Turbo Lister and follow this Upgrade Guide to move your current listings from the old Turbo Lister to the New Turbo Lister.
