***Coming Soon: Change to “FROM” Field in Member-to-Member Emails*** |
16 May 2005 | 02:21PM EST

Next week, there will be a change to member-to-member emails like Ask Seller a Question (ASQ). The “FROM” field will no longer display the email address of the other member, and instead will display “eBay Member: . The “REPLY-TO” field will still contain the actual email address of the member wishing to contact you (as long as the sending member did not choose to hide their email address) so you will still be able to reply directly to the member via your email program if you so choose.
This may affect certain processes some sellers use for managing their communication (recording addresses, etc); however this change needs to be made to accommodate certain new sender-based authentication standards going into use by some email service providers (such as Hotmail, gMail and Yahoo) to combat spam and spoof. The new authentication standards attempt to confirm that the email address in the “FROM” field actually corresponds with the sender's IP address. Given that eBay is sending the message on behalf of the member, there would be no “FROM” / IP address match under the present member-to-member configuration. As a result, these messages would most likely be blocked by some of the major email service providers.
We made this change to improve email deliverability of member to member messages.
Regards,
The eBay Team
